Love this video. It reminds me of my own youth mis-spent spotting and riding trains in and out of this magnificent station. To most of the regular enthusiasts that visited , the valley lines DMU's were affectionately known locally as the C3's...the class 116s we all went to Barry Island on😎 So very different today! Still a great station and forever my favourite for all of my former happy days👍

Absolutely wonderful. So much has changed in 25 years, this is even pre-sprinter era. And the old curved platforms on the spur to the docks are still there - in those days used for parcels trains, but all gone now. Thanks very much.

Ahhh Cardiff back when the trains smoked a lot and went clickety-clack! We don't have that anymore but I used to remember so much as I went shopping with my mum.

Re 1:39. My old art teacher, Alan Warburton of Porth County Comprehensive school, painted the daffodils on the water tower. He also painted murals - a 150ft long one on Porth Station and several murals on public urinals in and around Porth - Prince Charles came to see one of them ...that's not a sentence you get to type everyday ;-)

I don’t think so, but there were a few Derby built classes which looked similar. Someone must make one as I’ve seen them at model railway shows.

The change to 150s started in 1987 - check out my Website, photos, page 7 of SouthWales section (that's how I found out). When I was the Depot Engineer in the DMU shed I avoided Pacers but they arrived after I left so it would be the early 1990s for Pacers.

InterCity 125 should be the only one still existed in Cardiff Central, however the engine has been changed...

Love it, so much more interesting than today. That last shot - is that a 119-101-108 formation?

Out of interest when did 142s and 150s replace the 101s and 118s I know the 143s weren't introduced to the Welsh Valleys until 1991, I have read that class 150/2s replaced some first gen DMUs in 1987 while the rest were replaced by class 153s in 1992.

I think it is a 116-101-108 formation. Things got a bit desperate sometimes.

When were First Gen DMUs replaced on the welsh valley lines?

Does anyone know the class of DMU at the 2:15 mark please? I grew up with all these trains in service (I was 8 in 1987) and have been trying to find out what class I remember going into town on with my late mother. Thank you.
@ianwalmsley24 жыл бұрын
That’s a class 116, used on the Valley lines.

@@ianwalmsley2 Thank you so much Ian... I have been trying to find out what class of train it was for a while now. I have such fond memories of it. Do you know if Hornby ever released a set in the 116 class by any chance?

Great videos. Happy days during the 70s n 80s when I travelled from Salisbury to Tirphil. A crompton and 5 Mk1s to Cardiff, then a cl 117 up to Rhymney. Would it be at all possible to obtain any copies of your filming during the BR period, perhaps 1970s? onwards, even outtakes. I would be more than happy to pay for costs and it would be for private use only. I am currently modelling Bargoed 1970-1985 in OO.

I feel too much North American influence (lack of electrification). Hope this is quashed soon with the electrification of the Severn Tunnel.
