He got him with "weren't you trying to catch a break once?" Roger is a boy prince who inherited his father's firm through no effort of his own. He never had to catch a break, and that's his greatest insecurity.

To be fair, Roger was in the Pacific Theatre of World War 2. It's not like he's a total stuck up rich boy. He could've avoided the draft and gone to college cause he was given the silver spoon, but he didn't and volunteered. If you were a navalman fighting Japan in that time, it didn't matter who you were or where you came from. Sad to see so many people overlook that in Roger.

Purpled Roger was born in 1916. He was 26 when Pearl Harbor broke out. Not in college. Plus there were no draft deferments during ww2. Everyone went. But he still kick butt in ww2. Way to go roger.

Only now I just realized, Don literally just hired himself for the job. I thought Sterling actually did hire him and said "Welcome aboard" they just didn't show it. @@guyhandsome43 Let's say he didn't actually hire him. He was just about over the edge of convincing Roger that he hired him the day prior, and was almost unsure whether it was his idea or Don's. I would imagine that if you are looking for someone in the position Don had... which required masterful sales pitches to high level executives... that you would absolutely want that man on your team - which he proved throughout almost all of the series. He's then just manipulative enough to be convincing and able to get you to think something was your idea - and you don't want to disappoint him. That's a genius there. Like him or not

laminage Yeah, I think there is an underlying theme of power throughout the whole series. Different characters see power differently and go about it in different ways. It often leads to a lot of jealousy and envy among them of each other. Pete's especially interesting as at the start he is quite jealous and competitive but as the series goes on he loses respect for Roger and co as he himself moves up in the company.

Yeah, remember how upset Pete got when Ken Cosgrove's Article got printed in a Magazine and he couldn't get that type of attention. He did get cut down quite a few pegs. Nope, it's how to Be A Bawse as per Lily Singh. Also it kind of parallels Simon Cowell whose first big break was getting his Girlfriend at the time a Record Deal, he got connections with Nigel Lythgoe and Pete Waterman who are now two of the Biggest Moguls in The UK. Nigel helped create The Popstars Franchise that debuted 20 Years Ago in New Zealand which would be the prototype for the Idol Franchise. Pete and his Partners Scott Aitken & Matthew Stock created SAW whose Songwriting Success created endless Hit Records. Pete's biggest professional embarassment was his Boy Band was One True Voice. Now Simon works on The X Factor who helped launch the Careers of Susan Boyle, Paul Potts, Il Divo amongst others.

In the 1980's there was a Man named Pete Waterman who was one of The UK's most powerful Songwriter Moguls whose Acts became successful in the US like Musical Youth, Banarama, Rick Astley & Dead Or Alive. There was a Man who had a Girlfriend whose single he wanted her to Record, he followed Pete around like a B@tch!, but persistence prevails where everything fails and The Young Man did well for himself. His name was Simon Cowell. Pete is still a Legend though but Simon keeps alot of the other Moguls on their toes.

Subtle hilarity. When Don says "I'd do anything to buy you a drink and hear what you have to say", he meant it as an appointment. He was basically going to prepare a pitch to present to Sterling to hire him. Sterling, who is a high functioning alcoholic, read it as a "right now". The reason why he is immediately aware of the time (it's 10am) is because he was already itching for a drink but was holding back on account of it being too early for one. Basically, Don gave him an excuse to get drunk. The flash cut to Sterling being somewhere and already knowing what he wants to drink and what time lunch is served shows his hand. He's been there before at about that hour to get drinks. The garcon part is an in-joke between him and the waiter. They know him personally. Draper was _unable_ to prepare his "I want to sell stuff" pitch, which is why he improvised and tricked Sterling into thinking he'd hired him. And here's the great part. Sterling knows he wasn't that drunk (he almost never is, high functioning), he's seeing right through what Don is trying. There's the tiniest of smirks just as the elevator door closes that I read as "got one". When Sterling wants credit for finding Don, this is what he meant. Don is a chaser, Roger knew he had to play hard to get, and when he saw Don go for it, he let him in.

I heard from old timers that getting hired at large firms was kind of easier than you think. Not like a scam here but close to it - lots of stories about people being hired from the mail room, etc - walking of fthe street - this was an era with no resumes. Jim Shooter, the famed comic book writer who later ran Marvel comics, got hired just by how good his stories he cold submitted were and only after he was hired did the DC editor find out that Shooter was a teenager who needed his mom to cash his checks.

Every single job I've ever had involved major impostor syndrome that was induced by the fact that I started each one with no experience: Paperboy: "You're not a real paperboy and anyway, you're not old enough yet." Bookseller: "You've never sold books before." Land surveyor: "You don't have any land surveying experience." Editor: "You've never edited any publications before." Software engineer: "You've never written any software that's in production." The moral of the story is: never let anyone stop you from taking a job because of the "lack of experience" objection. @@moabman6803 I responded to a classified ad in the newspaper for the land surveyor job, which was with the premier civil engineering firm in my town. It said to come to the office with a resume and ID. I knocked on the office door and the guy who opened it was wearing a tie and a pocket protector. I said I came for the land surveyor job and the first thing he said was "Do you have any experience?" and I started to say "No, but..." and he started closing the door on me and I had to put my boot in the door jamb to stop the door getting slammed on me. I said "I'm a fast learner, I did well in trig and I can level the instrument" (the last one was BS, I'd never touched a total station before). But I had gone to the library and checked out a book on surveying and read it, plus I had watched some surveyors working and dressed the part, and I also had a plumb bob, field book, and folding ruler with me. Lucky for me, this guy was the chief surveyor and the one doing the hiring. He let me come in and said "Fine, you'll need to take a written test" which was mostly basic math and statistics. I got one of the questions right that apparently lots of applicants got wrong and got most of the rest correct, and then they hired me. It was mostly based on my energy and attitude, not the test result.

The important thing here isn't the gamesmanship Don uses to get in the door. It's the portfolio he sent. You have to be able to do the job (or at least be able to do the job enough to get by in the early going). That bluff can be called at any time and will sink the entire ploy. Don is confident enough in his ability to send that portfolio, which makes him a viable candidate.

Yes, Exactly. Thing is though when you're forced to grow up quickly and having to fend for yourself at a young age, your brain is constantly on high alert. IMO That's why Don gets dissatisfied with life so quickly, he had to scrape by for so long and now he lives in relative comfort he doesn't know what to do with himself, he needs that constant challenge to distract him from that void inside. Whether that be with booze, cigarettes, sex, or work.

One answer is that the struggle is the dream, all the riches on earth are of little comfort if you no longer have purpose in your life. A completely different tack but when I was in H.S. and not sure what I wanted to do I was driving around with my Dad talking to him and we drove past one of the rocket companies in Cocoa Beach (early 70's) and I said I'd like to work there do you think they word hire me? My Dad said walk in and ask the man at the first desk you come to. So I got out of the car and walked in, for some reason not nervous at all, and asked for a job and the man said do you have an Engineering degree or are you an Engineering major in College? I said no I am in H.S., which the man obviously knew, and he told me sorry you need an Engineering degree to be interviewed. So I walked back to the car and told my dad what he said. My Dad was wise enough to never say a word about it, knowing the seed had been planted and I am sure hoping that would motivate me...which it certainly did (a Ph.D. Aerospace Engineer who works for a large American defense contractor's Missile Systems company.

Funny thing, I was exactly like Draper in the 90s wanting to become an electrician. I harassed this contractor for three months and got on and prospered.
