Hi Afzal! I am currently studying the CFA and I would like to become a Portfolio Manager or an equity trader but I heard that it is impossible to start directly in these roles without prior experience. I have started to invest my own money in the stock market since 2017 and I have 10 years experience in data analysis using Excel and managing softwares as a data manager. Would that help me to access directly to these desired roles or do I have to start from scratch?

Sell side: mainly market making Buy side: proprietary trading

@@ezizj Trader sell side: spend 90% of their time in the commission business through market making. Algorithms have reduced the skill required in market making. 10% is spent prop trading which has been reduced due to regulation. Algorithms and regulation are reasons why investment banks do not hire as much in trading roles. Execution traders buy side: are usually the traders who put the positions on/off dependent on what the Portfolio Manager says. Usually trades that are tough to be automated. Different roles.

Private banks do services to the public but investment banks will not do services to the public they will give suggestions to their clients like merging,acquisition,asset management lot more are there but I said only few..some banks will do both investment banking and they do services to the public
