Not the worst I’ve seen, some will take the cup then chuck the contents at you. As someone above said, laughing isn’t forbidden, some actions are simply humorous and we laugh at the action and not their condition.

My dad was diagnosed with Alzheimer's. A few month's later he was diagnosed with advanced cancer and without aggressive treatment he'd have no chance of surviving. He said, 'so I can try to beat the cancer so Alzheimer's can run it's course - no thanks!' He told me the cancer was a blessing so he could pass away before losing all his memories. I thought of this while watching the video - trying to extend the life of someone that is being eaten away by Alzheimer's, by pressuring them to take medication. Seems crazy. My dad passed away in 2019 and I miss him, but also 100% think he was right.

My Dad had it before he died. My brother couldn’t get him to take his meds and would get very upset. I tried different things and eventually told Dad that if he wanted his cappuccino (which he loved and always wanted me to make for him), that he has to take the meds and swish them down with it! He would get a huge grin on his face with that first drink! Oh, we went through a lot but I will never regret being there for him. Truly miss those times now!

Oh, that was so my grandma. Her delivery was much more leathul, lol. She passed in June and lived to 102 years old. RIP, MB

Yes, in the dementia care training I received we were taught never to say "do you remember" or question them about whether they remember something. The main reason is that it can be upsetting and disorienting to the person with dementia to be asked about their memory.

I caught myself saying remember we talked about this yesterday, to my husband and saw the frown lines on his forehead and thought I have to remember not to say that to him. It’s a learnIng and day by day process. Thank you for these videos they are a help to me.

i know. although i do have this happen a lot,patients will say "but tomorrow i want to talk to the doctor about it" and i say okay, we can do that tomorrow if youd like. i think they feel like that gives them a little bit of control atleast. sometimes it does help to let them see notes from daughters/sons or people that they do trust so they get confirmation from them.

@@beatricesiaw8776 Exactly, my mom has same issue she was sttuborn , she doesn't listen , and now she has dementia, once my so called brother has noticed that , he kicked me out of the house because she doesn't even remember me as her daughter, if only she had listened to me we could go to doctor and at least we could refrain her dementia from getting worse quickly, now I am thrown out of house, jobless, without even knowing how they are treating her

That be a lot of apple sauce. Only use a small amount of apple sauce when using crushed meds because he/she might not finish the whole bowl and will not get all the medicine.

I literally just put it onto a spoon full of ice cream. It work like a charm but she can’t have the ice cream everyday so applesauce is good to.

I dont know but I work in a nursing home and this is NOT how it goes down. They yell, they scream, they spit, they hit, they scratch, they knock stuff over they repeatedly turn their head and refuse to open their mouth.

Unfortunately, a nursing home environment is a whole different ball game - bc it only takes one bad apple employee (poorly tempered or trained) to set a patient against everyone else attending them as well. IF a caregiver is truly compassionate, patient, flexible and *ingenious, they can nearly always find ways to move their patient in the right direction. (*emphasis on ingenious)

@reFocusZone this is literally my biggest problem omg. All my residents are in such a bad mood when I come back from my weekends because theyres a rude aide that covers my shift those days. Some days it's from the morning Staff too. I come back from my weekends and their teeth haven't been brushed and skin all dry I spend so much time and patience with them and it all gets set back, it's frustrating for me and so shitty for them they have to deal with the other person

This is what I've found that works for my loved one. I use cherry pie filling. The cherries are pitted so I slip the pills inside the cherries and since my loved one has no teeth or issues swallowing this somehow works. However its a messy,sticky process but worth a try. I've tried the applesauce and ice cream approach with no luck. Rice pudding or cottage cheese works sometimes because its textured. Good luck every one struggling to be a good caregiver❤

“ ...being calm and positive does not always work as the loved one [patient] still refuses, so persistence is key and/or *delaying/re-scheduling injections/medications at a later time in the day!” **Some tablets may be crushed to a powder (check w/ the prescribing doctor as some meds have a special coating and are not suitable for crushing). - Anthony Aaron

Your right my mom diagnose with dementia due to her multiple stroke in the brain. Everytime i offer the meds she neglect it. And when it is in her mouth she spit her meds and not swallowing. I think my money get trashed only just to buy her meds but she dispose it like shit

my grandmother refuses to take her insulin shots before meals at the nursing home she easily gets frustrated at the nurses especially on the days I visit she yells at curses at them but eventually once she's calm she takes it.

It is very important whenever you are handling dementia that you have to be positive. Just like children, they pick up on your emotional state. You have to be in a sense happy for them. Always remember that you have influence over people around you. Everybody does. And you have to be careful

My mom is compliant but unfortunately we are now experiencing the challenge of getting her to swallow rather than retain and chew the pills. She will swallow the water but keep the pills on her tongue and show them to us or chew them. We keep saying and modeling, "Drink the water." the words are no longer holding meaning, "Swallow, spit etc... she doesn't know what they mean and sometimes even witnessing us modelling doesn't work. " I think we will try crushing the pills and I will try to take my medicine at the same time. My mom is so sweet and wants to be compliant ( that is a blessing because I know this disease often changes their personalities) but her language and comprehension are becoming effected. Any advice?

Most meds are available in liquid form. Taste is another issue sometimes but there's ways round that as mentioned.

My Grandfather suffered from Dementia I was trying to get him fed ,he stated that wasn't hungry but it was for him to eat so I kept on him well hurled the entire plate🍽 me 😃🙊🤣😂 .

My grandma has dementia . When she says she isnt going to take her meds I say " Okay., sure ,". Then I wait a bit and re-direct her by saying " Its time to take your happy pills " and explain she might get very sick if she doesnt take them - then I add positive reinforcement on how I think the meds have been helping her because a few days ago -- insert example -- like we did a 40 minute walk -- so if she stays on course we are set to have some good happy days where she hopefully feels great again. Its very up and down with her but its always worked !

Im taking care of my 78 year old grandmother right now who has Alzeimers and refuses to take her meds either by spitting them out or holding them in her mouth till they turn into powder and spitting them out and I don't know what to do I'm at my whits end 😭

I applaud you for trying to help in these difficult situations. But this was way too easily accomplished. My mother didn't have Alzheimers but didn't want to take some of her meds because of what they were for. She'd secretly spit some out after sweetly taking her pills. Found that out when after a few spat out doses she's suddenly screeching Get Thee Behind Me Satan!, screeching all of her doctors and I are "trying to kill her" etc etc. Combative as hell. Psychotic. Delusional. Horrifying thing is that with too many people getting shot by police who respond after families call 911, you don't want to call 911 in these situations out of fear of police pulling their tasers and guns. I'm glad the whole nightmare is over.

Some meds have bad side effects they may not like so them to take refusing meds may not be because they just don’t want to take them maybe they don’t like the side effects from them

my dad(85) refused to take his medicine the other day, after some major shouting he took them and never refused again. I don't have that kind of patience. I also do the same when he refuses to wear his adult diapers. I don't like to be mean but it's the only thing that works.

@@brianmayabella5992 I've found my mother's pills everywhere...and I do mean everywhere - under couch cushions, under her bed, on her bedroom dresser, in the bathroom. After over two years of constant refusal to take her meds with the fighting making my step-father's medical condition worse, he now just sets them down with her breakfast and says "There they are; I can't argue with you anymore." Having tried to give them to her myself, I can't say I blame him. The whole situation is just sad, to say the least.

I vowed 100% refuse to change my lifestyle if I get diabetes or high / low blood pressure. When I was younger I was on several medicines (none being for the above listed reasons) being a pre-mature baby and having the whole field of problems, now at 25 I am only 1 pill a day !!

On my unit there's a really aggressive resident, like once she held me in her room and kept hitting me when i tried to leave, and was pulling me around lol but she likes me the most so when the nurse can't get her to take her medication she delegates me to do it What I normally do is I'll take her to her room, chat with her a little bit, then I'll say "hey I got your pill, it'll help with X" and then usually she will take it. however often she doesn't as well. So in those cases I go back to talking with her and distract her while the nurse puts it in some pudding, then I'll take tha and go to her and say somthing like "hey I just made this pudding, I'm trying a new recipe can you please taste it?" That almost always works then I hand her some water to help rinse it down Without a doubt I've been learning that having a good base line rapport with your residents will help so much in any effort you try, she wouldn't take it if her and I didn't have a good bond and would still try and fight

Good ways of supporting someone to take medicines, However, the second part to crush and mix medication in foods, Should not be done without a doctors agreement, as the ingredients of the tablet could be altered ,causing the medicine to react within the body and cause illness.

A pharmacist would be more informed on medications, and better able to offer alternatives. For example time release meds, and coated pills that bypass stomach acids, would not be something you would want crushed or dissolved.

In this video it all works out,........but in my case, my dear husband takes pills twice a day.....it takes me at least an hour each time..it is a constant battle,,,,he will hold them in his hand or put them on his bed table or coffee table, I change the type of liquid to try to make it easier to swallow, I,e. Keifer...yogurt drink, it’s nice and thick....but it is such a hard task....I adore my husband, and he is still ok in lots of of his abilities,....but this is horrible....especially his evening pills, I am exhausted by then, I have cancer, m.s.....remitting and very severe spine issues, so it is really upsetting to me. I try to explain that he will become ill if he keeps missing his diabetes and blood pressure meds....oh dear, I end up crying.....I am so overwhelmed.....

Dear Tisha, this sounds so much like what my parents are going through; in our case it's my mother who refuses medication & my step-father (who is a Stage IVa throat cancer survivor) caring for her. Now Mother is refusing to take her blood pressure meds & in one day my step-father took her to an urgent care then later the ER when her blood pressure shot up into a very dangerous level. Trying to reason wit dementia patients is fairly useless although I still try. :/ I tried to tell my step-father a year ago that mother needed to be admitted to the hospital when she went from 139 lbs to 110 lbs (5'7") in less than a month. His answer - "If I admit her to the hospital I'll "lose her" - meaning she'll be mad at him. I told her if he didn't she'd be a lot worse than mad at him. Over a year later he now agrees he should have listened to me. He's her health surrogate so there is nothing I could have done without his permission. After she wandered out of the house and was found sitting in the middle of the road near a very busy intersection by the police, he know has plans in motion for her to be admitted to a very reputable memory care facility. I'm jumpy every time the phone rings, not knowing what the news will be. Do you have any children or family members who can help, or just allow you some time to rest? God bless you and your dear husband, Tisha. I understand how cruel this disease is.

My late father would accept the meds, but would sneakily spit them out. Using reverse Psychology, I would ask him to remind me to take my meds. I made the point that i did not spit the meds out and that I felt so much better swallowing them. He caught on. We checked each other's mouth to he sure the pills had been swallowed. We both benefited from helping each other.

Yea my mom isn't taking her meds tried to tell the fam but she lied. Now she has people around that might just be using her . Might just have to get the government involved.

Argumentative and a man who dosent care to please anyone spouse, kids especially a dr. When he was well he hadntonfight drs for care he was very health aware and now will fight everyone including his own notes and directions. He will refuse to take them then walj around with the meds in his pocket and then think he needs to take them at a different time so ay a risk of double dosing has a pace maker and wife treats like he has autonomy still, has relinquished his choice and honestly not sure she can safely. These people in their mid 80's. My mom fought about meds however was a people pleaser in her life oppisite my father in law. This technique isnt effective in all personality types. These are at home situations and dementia could mean by the time you read th leatter or name of medication they forgotnwhy you ate even reading it or who the dr is or if they really wrote that note to themself. They can hit scream curse and create a danger for themself and others at home with calm people. Please dont think this video is a universal fix it absolutely is not

All I no being care giver is not fun ..its so stressful. They call you all times of the night .none stop .sometimes i feel like a paid slave ..I smell all type of smells i dont wont to smell.then what you do for them it's never enough all they wont is more ,more, work that need to be done ..

i get that way sometimes to. u just get a feeling of being babied...coddled thats annoying...then one day u just say *fuck you* to the system. thats why i refuse..... making me eat these pills eh? ya know what i mean? amen, right?
