In the aftermath of Tropical Cyclone Harold, shelter was one of the most urgent needs for the people of South Pentecost. It was also one of the hardest needs for humanitarian responders to meet. The solution was local.
CARE supported people to draw on their traditional knowledge, to learn about how to make their houses safer, and supported knowledge sharing from other islands. CARE also distributed materials such as nails, saws and chainsaws to assist them to rebuild.
CARE also encouraged women to play an active role in rebuilding their communities, with 40% of trained community leaders being women.
Pentecost is building back better in so many ways. The key is local leadership.
