During our trip to LA, we met up with Grammy nominated saxophonist Dave Koz to tell him about Postmodern Jukebox. He loved the idea and offered to help us do a vintage remake of that song with that famous 80's sax riff. Check out the "Careless Whisper" variations in his solo at 1:42

What I love about this version - and it seems nobody else comments on this - are the style quotations. At 2:04 they move into a 12/8 shuffle. From 2:15 to 2:20 they play in 5/4, basically Paul Desmond's "Take Five", and then from 2:27 to 2:34 this is the Police's "Message in a Bottle". And after 7 seconds, straight back into the original. What a genius arrangement!!

I realize, watching these videos, that the piano is a lot more of a percussive instrument than I thought. It looks less like he's pressing individual keys to make notes, and more like his hands just have an idea of how they want to strike the area the keys lay in...and they just happen to hit all the tuned actuators. Like...a high-detail xylophone, just complicated and awesome. Neat.

Time can never mend The careless whisper of a good friend To the heart and mind If your answer's kind There's no comfort in the truth Pain is all you'll find I should have known better, yeah I feel so unsure As I take your hand and lead you to the dance floor As the music dies Something in your eyes Calls to mind a silver screen And all its sad goodbyes I'm never gonna dance again Guilty feet have got no rhythm Though it's easy to pretend I know you're not a fool I should have known better than to cheat a friend And waste a chance that I'd been given So I'm never gonna dance again The way I danced with you Time can never mend The careless whisper of a good friend To the heart and mind If your answer's kind There's no comfort in the truth Pain is all you'll find I'm never gonna dance again Guilty feet have got no rhythm Though it's easy to pretend I know you're not a fool I should have known better than to cheat a friend And waste a chance that I'd been given So I'm never gonna dance again The way I danced with you Never without your love What am I without your love? Tonight the music seems so loud I wish that we could lose this crowd Maybe it's better this way We'd hurt each other with the things we want to say We could have been so good together, We could have lived this dance forever But now, who's gonna dance with me? Please stay I'm never gonna dance again Guilty feet have got no rhythm Though it's easy to pretend I know you're not a fool I should have known better than to cheat a friend And waste a chance that I'd been given So I'm never gonna dance again The way I danced with you Now that you're gone Now that you're gone Now that you're gone What I did that was so wrong? With all the great, and all the incredible numbers PMJ has done, if I had to pick a favourite, it would be this. It's Scott's congenial arrangement that keeps changing styles, it's the genius of the original song, it's Robyn's unique voice and her emoting, and it's the pure and simple set up. This song is the Sistine Chapel of whatever it is PMJ does.

I feel so unsure, As I take your hand, And lead you to the dance floor, As the music dies, Something in your eyes, Calls to mind a silver screen, And all its sad goodbyes. I'm never gonna dance again, Guilty feet have got no rhythm, Though it's easy to pretend, I know you're not a fool, I should have known better than to cheat a friend, And waste a chance that I'd been given, So I'm never gonna dance again, The way I danced with you, Time can never mend, The careless whisper of a good friend, To the heart and mind, Ignorance is kind, There's no comfort in the truth, Pain is all you'll find. I'm never gonna dance again, Guilty feet have got no rhythm, Though it's easy to pretend, I know you're not a fool, I should have known better than to cheat a friend, And waste a chance that I'd been given, So I'm never gonna dance again, The way I danced with you, Tonight the music seems so loud, I wish that we could lose this crowd, Maybe it's better this way, We'd hurt each other with the things we want to say, We could have been so good together, We could have lived this dance forever, But now who's gonna dance with me, Please stay. I'm never gonna dance again, Guilty feet have got no rhythm, Though it's easy to pretend, I know you're not a fool, I should have known better than to cheat a friend, And waste a chance that I'd been given, So I'm never gonna dance again, The way I danced with you.
