His voice was calm, but his refusal to just simply tell her why they were pulled over was because, as he admitted, he was put off by her demeanor. Understandably so, but in his type of work you'll encounter all kinds of bad behavior. He needs to know how to not let it get to him so that he participates in a power struggle & adds fuel to her fire. He should have known how to de-escalate her pumped up importance.

Okay, to play devil's advocate, those cops, after impounding the vehicle, did tell them to call someone to transport them. At that point, the person called was obviously involved in the situation.
