Only way that Toyota can compete with the Ranger Raptor EcoBoost head-to-head is if they install the 3.5 TT petrol V6 from the LC300 and nibble some off-road tech from that model and stuff like the new Tacoma TRD Pro. Add to the fact that a GR Hilux needs a coil spring conversion as well, which can only be achieved through the usage of TNGA-F platform. There is no way they can do both of those on the old IMV platform. However, if Ford only offers the watered-down Ranger Raptor with the 2.0 bi-turbo diesel and no Fox Live Valve and front locker in certain markets like mine, this Hilux GR-S is a close competitor.

Chose this GR sport over old box vw Amarok, new box not coming to the caribbean, Nissan Frontier, and Dmax was just not available. Offroad capability was a priority, and this is a tad better than the others with amenities such as keyless entry, button start, large infotainment (not available in old box amarok). The interior more to my liking than the Frontier. On road handling is very sporty, thanks to the wider track and tweaked suspension. Our version has red details on the dashboard, and on the seats for a youthful touch. It also comes with an aerodynamically enhancing spoiler and marine canvas truck cover. Getting about 9.5 l/100km on mixed driving and prudent driving.

The raptor is borderline useless, designed for off road racing (dirt tracks and potholes) and not off-road adventures, It is a Ute but the fuel economy is half of a diesel. Try towing something and you will be stopping at EVERY petrol station on the way. If you think you can put that power down on the road... You're delusional and WILL roll over at the first corner you take at speed. The cops have rolled their rangers and those are not even raptors. point: 0-100 means nothing except when your pulling out into traffic but normal people wait for a gap.

It's dated, it has flaws, and the flares are.... But I think it would still be a great ute to own. I do agree a strong diesel and 6 speed are better than a smaller engine and 10 speed. At the end of the day it's still a work ute in disguise. And for that reason you want a bit of simplicity. It's a difficult one. The Ford is so much more advanced, but I know which one will cause less dramas and probably hold its value better.

About the 3,5T towing capacity. In my home country we are allowed to tow 3,5T with a car that weighs 3,5T (including passengers and load), you do need a special license to tow more then 750kg. I think it’s same for the rest or most of the country’s in Europe the same. Maybe they just wanted to make it easy for them and not have to adjust themself country by country?

There's really no justification for charging an extra $20k for what is essentially a standard hilux with flares and a GR badge. Toyota knows how to extract maximum dollars from their reliable reputation otherwise why would you buy one compared to other offerings on the market? If Toyota released a model with V6, updated interior and/or exterior, extra features etc it would absolutely slay the market rather than just be the number 1 work ute in the country.

It is just another 4 door 4X4 work ute. I don't understand putting a 4 door, 5 seat ute through its paces with only one person in it and no cargo whatsoever. If people are driving around 1 up with no cargo what on earth do they need this type of vehicle for? Do the test with 4 people and about 2-3 hundred kilos of cargo as see how it goes.... after all isn't that how they will be used? As for handling, they are all pretty bad on a road at anything over 75 km/h. It's a work ute which can double at some light off-roading, nothing inspiring about it from what I can see.

As a rogue owner bought new in 2018, I have to point out that this "GR" variant is absolutely a pathetic attempt on a more powerful vehicle and have instead slapped a GR badge on it. Same outdated engine/drivetrain with a miled power boost and the same interior is ridiculous at this stage and given how far in the lifecycle toyota has stretched this ute going into 2024!

ranger looks good but is otherwise a very very unreliable dressed up piece of crap. i work on both hilux and rangers every day and the difference is when the Hilux has issues most times they will get you home. the ranger will not. i would steer very clear of the ranger so many other better Utes. the ranger is trash

Hilux sits well on top in regards to reliability mate. the rangers are and have always been complete lemons. ford just never got them right. unreliable electronics, faulty over ambitious gearbox's they are a complete mess. would happily spend money on many other utes then a ranger. triton, dmax, hilux are all far better utes

@@Luke-rt9gy the 10 speed gearboxes are better than the previous ford transmissions, The previous engines were a nightmare which is why they were replaced but the 2.0 bi turbo is highly strung and not good. The only good thing about the ranger in the (stock) suspension but who keeps their Ute stock. a cheaper Ute with a good aftermarket package can be better.

yes, it hunts too much at freeway speeds. all it needs is to stay in gear and use the torque it has.

Power and torque drops off around 3,000. At full noise it stays above 3,500 revs consistently because of its gearing.

Hey Paul,have you noticed when rear differential lock switched on it disengages Atrac in both Hilux and Fortuner.Which is quite frustrating because it make rear axle lock and leave front end as open differential,as sometimes there are situations where Turning off diff lock and keeping atrac made some obstacles to tackle easier.What you think about this it.

Either use traction control or get new diff locks . their thinking with this was a bit rubbish
@lexuslfa4739
@lexuslfa4739 9 ай бұрын
i thought it was foolish of them to do that. The front wheels need also to have some sort of "locking " mechanism and they can only achieve that by use of A-trac

I test drove the GR Sport version today and after test driving the D-max, Wildtrack, Nissan Navara warrior pro x Raptor the GR Hilux craps on all of them. The warrior pro 4. For a 2.3ltr twin turbo looks tough on the outside but when you get in it, you discover very quickly that it has no balls. The rogue is only good for city commute or on a farm. The GR IS THE BEST DEISEL ON THE MARKET! This guy hasn’t got a clue. Hilux will outlive most people!.

The first comments should be the fact that it is not 2020 ancap tested like others in this vehicle standard. Toyota profit over setting benchmark safety standards rushed Hilux in a 2019 test so they didn’t need to meet 2020 testing.

I love how all of the Hilux fanboys trashed Volkswagen for coming out with the Walkinshaw Amarok for being outdated and overpriced, now Toyota have done exactly that, created an overpriced and outdated Ute for rich tradies Before all the Hilux fanboys come at me to say “BuT tHe AmArOk Is UnReLiAbLe”, my dad’s W580 has racked up almost 50,000 km in 18 months and hasn’t had a problem. Before that, he had a 2014 Amarok (which was passed down to me) and had 236,000 km with minimal problems (I’ve since sold that car to get a commodore)

Centre diff lock is not there because it's not an AWD like prado. Nevertheless when you engage 4H, it does exactly what a centre diff lock meant to do, that is, locking both front and rear axles.

Looks like they haven't fixed the front traction control turning off when the rear locker is in? If they have, please correct me. This is one of the few issues I had when looking at Ranger vs Hilux. It makes a dramatic difference when the going gets harder... Otherwise, the traction control on looks to still be significantly better than the Ranger...

The reason they keep it to low range on the diff is because if you are in high range your tires are going to spin faster when in air but the problem with that is when your rear wheels do touch the ground with the tires spinning at that speed and it suddenly stops it will break the diff wich is expensive to replace so inorder to try and prevent that they only keep it in low range seeing as it wil spin slower in the air
