I read the book first then watched the film. The book is quite simply a masterpiece of subtlety in expressing the inexpressible - the film was great and Carey Mulligan was a fantastic choice for a character who is eminently loveable.

Slartibartfast I agree, she is one of the most underrated actresses. She is brilliant, IMO, in all her roles. I know what she is thinking/feeling just by her facial expressions. She knows what she is doing, and found her calling. As for the movie, absolutely gut-wrenching. The line that meant the most, or hit me the hardest, was her last line. “We all complete. Maybe none of us really understand what we have lived through.....or, feel we had enough time...” We all “do complete,” and many feel they haven’t done all they wanted, and that there is just never enough time. Such a simple concept, yet in a truly unique way of expressing it. Beautiful, absolutely beautiful! ✌️

I agree and also, I think, that even there was somebody who ran away, this story shouldn't show you the story of the happy one, of one happy one from thousand sad stories, this story should show the normal story from the thousand stories...

On the running away thing, there were all those stories that the kids had been told of what happened to those who tried running away--hands and feet getting chopped off, etc. Perhaps it was out of fear?

@clarksc1988 My thoughts exactly. I found that I never asked myself why didn't they run away, because I just accepted their fate as they had. Why would they even consider it? I'm kind of thinking though whether the story would have been more/less powerful if they did try to escape. They seemed a little too passive for me, and at the end, I felt, "Meh, it was going to happen." But I suppose their passivity to their fates made Tommy's final outburst all the more profound.

@gracemil2888 plus they seem to have trackers in their hands (which they scan whenever they leave or enter the house) and yes, they don't know any better. (hence the scene of them watching a sit com on tv and not understanding the humor).

Love her voice! I only saw her in Pride and Prejudice, but she was quite young, so her voice wasn't as mature.

If you have read the book the film will seem really disapointing as the book is so amazing. but i saw the film before i read the book and im glad beause i really loved the film its deffinatly worth watching if you havent read the book.

I used "question" in the wider meaning of the word. In my opinion, to a certain amount the passive attitude of Ishiguro's characters is similar to that experienced by the Jews who tried to convince themselves that nothing dangerous was really happening until the concentration camps proved they were wrong. Those who suffer and never rebel though they are crowds have always been a mystery to me. Obviously, this is only one aspect of the movie and the novel. Please excuse my poor English.

@jacquejamie yeah but sometimes things are out of your control.. for these children, they grow up being brainwashed to think their PURPOSE is to donate their organs.. and even when they grow up, they're sent to cottages to live together... some people from Hailsham and others from other organ donor schools... and they're constantly expected like as if it's all theyre meant for, to think that they ARE only because they need to give.

@sisifusar I don't think it was that simple. I don't think it was to evade punishment. I mean, I'm sure they probably legally couldn't try to escape, but I doubt they even entertained that thought. Even the whole theory about being in love was just to DEFER donations.

FYI, this interview shows clips that basically give away THE ENTIRE MOVIE i would NOT want to watch this BEFORE seeing the movie

@ahnhan97 I initially thought this movie was just depressing... Normally after watching a movie I don't like, I just stop thinking about it immediately after watching it, but I kept thinking about this movie. The more I thought about it, the more I seemed to like it! And now I really want to see it again! It makes you think. I'd say the movie is about a group of children in a school where they are essentially designed to donate their organs to other people. Therefore dying at a young age.

My God, Mulligan is starting to look like fellow British actress from the 60's-Susannah York. Other times, she looks like what Judi Dench looked like in her twenties.

That's a good question - Why didn't they run away? They missed a HUGE opportunity here. This would have made a great action movie if they had hijacked a helicopter gunship and fired missiles at the pursuing health department officials and finally crash landed in the English Channel and ridden on the back of a shark to safety in France.

Holly DeKatt perhaps if you were looking to see an action movie, it might work, might not. Personally, I don’t believe the book was written to discuss/decide why they didn’t just leave. IMO - I see it as, we all have such a short time here. Most will wish they had done more, like our dreams as children, on in to adulthood, and becoming a parent, etc., For me, it was saying no one thinks we have enough time in our life; whether we are the donor, or the one who keeps living through the donations. Ultimately, we are all human, and we all feel generally the same way about our short time here on Earth. This just touches the surface of so many other questions, with the final one, why are we here? JMO ✌️

I have to say that I liked this movie a lot, but the reason for the existence of these "donors" is wrong on EVERY level. This was a very sad movie and it made me angry. I'm so glad this was fantasy.

I loved the book but thought the characters unrealistic. In one sense the author tries to show the lives of the students in a way that we can relate to them, yet their lack of rebellion makes them completely artificial. Who could freely accpet the fate they had without trying to do something..

Socialisation. Learned helplessness. Many more complex notions a human brain grows itself around and begins to calcify as it ages than I could suggest, I'd think.
