Cargo Ramp Marshalling - Cathay Pacific Cargo Gate Arrival [B-LJA] at O'Hare Airport [05.22.2015]

My sincerest apologies to all my subscribers - I have been very, very busy lately with 2 full-time jobs, school, and some personal issies I'm dealing with, but I still do my best to watch as many of your videos as possible, and capture new footage for you. Here's something to keep you guys watching (I hope!).
Here I am at my ramp job marshalling Cathay Pacific Cargo's "Hong Kong Trader" into its stand at the South Central Cargo Ramp at Chicago O'Hare International / Int'l Airport ( KORD / ORD ).
Marshall signals:
0:02 - ready to indicate
0:44 - turn left
1:04 - come straight
1:08 - turn right
1:47 - prepare for stop
1:51 - stop
2:00 - ground member (chock) is giving check with thumbs up, that chocks are in place
2:07 - chocks are in place
Here, she is operating into Chicago - O'Hare International / Int'l Airport (KORD / ORD ) as Cathay Pacific 93 Heavy from Rickenbacker Intenational / Int'l Airport ( KLCK / LCK ). This is what we call a "transit flight" because it originated at Hong Kong Chep Lap Kok International / Int'l Airport ( VHHH / HKG ) with a refueling stopover at Anchorage - Ted Stevens International / Int'l Airport ( PANC / ANC ) in Alaska before proceeding to LCK where some cargo was offloaded. The aircraft was once again refueled, and fresh cargo bound for HKG was loaded. At ORD, we offloaded the rest of the original import cargo from HKG and loaded some freight bound for Hong Kong, while keeping the freight that was loaded in Columbus, Ohio onboard.
B-LJA is a Boeing 747-867F, the 1427th Boeing 747 ever built. She is powered by four ( 4 ) General Electric GEnx turbofan engines. Hong Kong Trader's first flight was in November of 2011 after which she was delivered to CX on the 14th of the month, and ferried to Hong Kong over the next 2 days.

@@lisakayser8234 marshaling isn’t actually taught at a school. You’re taught as part of OJT when applying for a ramp member position. At least that’s when I was taught

@@lisakayser8234 We teach people on the job, usually with a luggage tug or other airport vehicle, dometimes even just a person walking down the ramp centerline, playing the part of an airplane with the driver deliberately going off-course a couple of times to train the marshaller to correct them.

Very nice marshaling... did this for about 8 years working for United Airlines.. the only thing that is preventing this video to be used as a training video is the other ground crew member.. they are not waiting for the engines to be shut off, not waiting for the signal that it is ok to go in and place the chuck in the real wheels.. they are standing with in inches from an engine at full speed!!

Thank you! I work UA ramp now and trust me, the differences are day and night. Cargo operations are, as we jokingly say, "what separates the boys from the men." We broke rules every single day to turn these flights and get them out. At United, not so much, most things are done by the book. Sometimes I catch myself about to do something I'd do at cargo, like driving empty dollies or bag carts in between the engines of a 747 or under the wing to get out of a tight space, that'd get me in a lot of trouble at UAL. I also often want to approach the plane, chock it, and pop the cargo doors open, but oh, wait a minute, the left engine is still running, lol. I'd get away with that all day long at cargo. Nice marshalling! But,some of the ground staff seems to be breaking ramp safety rules by approaching the aircraft before engines stops and while the anti collision light is on.

You’re allowed to Chalk nose gear as soon as the plane comes to final stop

@@cosmaskase946 no actually that’s common practice. As soon as the plane comes to a stop you have to chock the nose gear ASAP, as they’ll lose hydraulic pressure as soon as the engines are down and APU is off. Main gears are only chocked once the all clear is given.

@@gavt303 The speed at which I move the wands is indicative of how quickly I want the plane to enter the gate. Obviously, the cockpit isn't going to firewall the throttles into the gate, but a nice, consistent speed is good. We have a short turnaround time to meet as a ground crew and every second counts. I often see the regional aircraft marshaller bringing a plane in at a snail's pace, I don't get it. You can do it a bit faster.

Ups training is very different. We’re getting trained by a Swissport instructor & he said putting the sticks behind your back is a no no, but I feel as long as the pilot recognizes every hand signal it shouldn’t matter ?

Beacon light still on, engines still running and there's a lot people walking underneath. Differs per airport probably. If authority sees you doing this in AMS they take your airport ID.

It also happens at Schiphol, they are more walking underneath the nose, not really nearby the engines.

At TXL Airport were are absolutely not allowed to approach the A/C till the beacon are not switched off.

Each airline and airport has different regulations. I used to work Nippon Cargo and they absolutely do not allow anyone inside the safety envelope while the beacon is on, even if all engines are off and the parking brake is set.

@@ChicagoAirportSpotter The marshaler must issue a signal according to the standard signal, method clearly and appropriately, appropriately so that the signal can be accurately transmitted to the chief. Marshalers generally work where they are visible to passengers, visitors, etc. It gives a strong impression as an image of an airline. As a person engaged in the work related to the operation of the aircraft, it is important to be aware that the work must be prepared and carried out in a moderation operation.

Wow amazing job and I know it’s really easy if you watch this and practice when I’m gonna start working in the airport thank that my dad works there for southwest and he is gonna help me out getting a job there so I’m exited to work for southwest and the airport life swing playing coming over so this the dream job glad I finish high school and gonna apply for that job

When I used to Marshall aircraft for WFS they had a guy next to the landing gear on the right of the landing gear (facing the nose of the aircraft) signaling you how far you got to stop, it’s pretty useful to be honest. Keeps you right on the spot for parking. I think I see the same thing going on here. Haha

Yep, that's exactly what my coworker is doing there just to the right of the nose gear. We sometimes used a ladder or even a cargo K-loader to marshall planes. From higher up, you can see the stop marks without the need for a 2nd marshaller.

WFS employee here, the way the gate line at our airport is, even on our a320s it’s really difficult to see where the park line is. It’s on a weird slope kinda, I think we could really use a guy near the nose gear!

No, it's because I'm standing at ground level with the illuminated wands actually guiding the aircraft. As such, I can't see the painted yellow "stop block" where the aircraft's nose gear is supposed to stop. The guy guiding me is standing well in view of it and telling me when to tell the aircraft to stop

He doesn’t have a slow-down sign, does he? At BKK airport they wave their hands below the elbows trough their hips slowly. That means to pilot to slow down before hit the brake. So the pilots won’t confuse when to prepare to fully stop.

At my job everyone would get written up for that. Walking under the plane while moving is a safety violation that would get you fired around here. Cool to see the different ways companies handle marshalling. We do it differently on signals but your way seems easier

The flight crew will find it difficult to see your signals if you’re too near. If you cant step back further, Marshall from an elevated position with a belt loader or Stairs.

Personally, I like it a lot more than the SE Cargo Ramp, because the B748F's can turn into their gates under their own power, whereas on the SE Cargo Ramp, we have to tow them in off the ramp taxiway. Pushing out of any of the SC Cargo gates is always very tight and you have to be perfect on it, because of the procimity of the blast fence. And I appreciate that the service road got narrowed and that series of turns eliminated with a diagonal road! It makes getting our flights in and out a whole lot easier now that they can come in and go out straight through TWY DD.

1:30 i dont know whoever the white shirt guy, but it was still not a good idea to walk through a moving aircraft like that... The aircraft should fully stopped, engines and becon light had been shut down completely, and headsetman/marshaller gave thumbs-up, after that everyone can approach the aircraft in terms of safety.

Marshaling is excellent. But I am confused whether to give thumps up for marshaling or down for poor safety as the ground crew are very close to the running engines.

Marshalling is marshalling, as long as you guide them onto centerline and the proper stop mark, you're good. Honestly, marshalling a 747 is a pain because of how big and tall the aircraft is - the flight crew have a roughly 90-foot blind spot in front of them because of the height they sit at and the length of the nose in front of them, you have to be either really far out in front of them, or on an elevated spot so they can see you.

this is incorrect technique, the wing walkers wasn’t even guiding the plane in. the whole crew was in the safety zone while the engine was running and if they continued to do that they would be sucked in the engine.
