Here's a lovely quote about forgetting books: "I cannot remember all the books I’ve read any more than all the meals I have eaten; even so, they have made me. "

i love rereading my favourite books/book series every few years because that is the amount of time it takes me to almost fully forget the details and plots 📖 it's the closest i'm able to get to the feelings i had when i experienced my favourite books for the very first time! i've been doing this for years and it's magical to dive back into old worlds with a genuine curiosity! thank you for this lovely tea (in my case coffee) time 💞

Same. I'm now rereading the Folk of Air trilogy after like 2 years. I have forgotten almost everything from it and it annoys me that I don't even remember some major details, but at the same time I'm glad because it feels more like I'm reading it for the first time.

Another thing about e-books is that as a non-native English speaker, it is so easy to find the meanings of words you don't understand in a book! I use the Kindle app to read my e-books, and there we have an option to just click on the word, and it gives us the meaning and usage in a sentence if we have the dictionary pre-loaded. That's a huge plus for me, as it saves a lot of time. Also, we can adjust the brightness and colour of text, which again is such a plus if you love reading late into the night and don't want to disturb the other family members by keeping the room lights on! :) I recently switched to e-books, and though I miss the feeling of holding a physical book, its smell and everything, e-books win for me!

Wow, can’t imagining not listening to anything while reading. My friends think I‘m weird because I get so into reading that I can even have the TV on in the background without distracting me from reading 😅 I feel absolutely the same about book size! I know my kindle will show me the length in comparison on the home screen and give me the page count as well as how far along I am in % bit it‘s just way easier for my brain to understand how big a book is if I‘m holding it in my hands 🙈 Now, word count though! Since I‘ve been an avid fanfiction reader for most of my life, which always show their word count, I have a better grasp on that 😃

I think it's so interesting how you find ebooks less intimidating because you can't see the length of them--that makes them more intimidating to me! I find that when I can't physically see how long the book I'm reading is, I'm less motivated to read because I don't know how much I have left. how strange, I've never thought about people feeling the opposite but I loved hearing about your perspective!!! (edit: 1000% Nikolai for me too. the Darkling and Mal have nothing on him heheheh)

Hi, Cari, sorry. This time I was really sleeping when you posted. I love all of your videos, including the ones that you just talk. They are also helpful for my english. And I must say, I would *love* to have a library, that's like an ultimate dream. And I'm a high school student and I talked about this before but still, I go to scouting, I write and make designs in a magazine, I go to a course about technology and I join to the tournaments, I do projects. And I also try to learn/ not forget english. And help my mother which takes 3-4 hours of my day. And now, they added lessons for Saturday too in my school. So I am pretty busy, but I love reading books, and reading books in my native language. So let me tell you, there is no way that I can make a schedule for everything and live happily. I have to sacrifice somethings to read. I choose sleep. I don't sleep. I also looovee my chemical romance!! Also I don't have social media accounts, so sorry for not aaking questions. Also, I'm uploading discord now.

What you said about the ebooks kind of hiding the real length of a book, 100% agreed. I was thinking about that a couple of days ago, it tricks you into either thinking a boring book isn't /that/ long and it'll be okay soon or into finishing a short book you're enjoying way too quickly. I wish I had word count instead of page count, that helps me a Lot. I wish word counts were printed somewhere in physical copies as well as ebooks, maybe audiobooks too. I don't know if it's an adhd thing, but having the.. smallest unit.. helps the most.
@caricanread
@caricanread 3 жыл бұрын
i prefer to just not know the length! except for the end of six of crows when there was a super long excerpt from the next book at the end, so I thought I had 100 pages left of six of crows and then it just ENDED hahah i was gutted

Your channel has been so helpful in encouraging me to just dive in and do it. This week I joined the library, and yesterday I finished a book for the first time in years (Convenience Store Woman after I think you mentioned it in a video?), and it felt amazing!! So long story short, although I'm sure you hear it all the time, thanks very much for helping me re-connect with some joy, Cari :)

I currently really struggle to finish books. I relate to the whole "being busy makes it harder to give certain books a chance." I am quite stressed at the moment and when I have time to read, or watch Netflix, then those moments are few and far between. I need those moments to be amazingly distracting and entertaining😅. So, when I feel like I am not enjoying a book, or it is not going anywhere, or it is too predictable.... I shelve it, for now. On another note - I feel like I remember plots of books extremely well. To such an extent that I couldnt EVER reread a book. I could reread chapters... or passages, but not the whole book. Its strange, but I dont have the same issue with movies. I rewatched Titanic 7 times, WHILE it was still in theatres. But clearly this behavior must be motivated by some other factor, than the plot, cause I absolutely know I didnt forget the boat would always sink in the end 🤣🤣🤣

I'd love to be blessed with forgetting plots! For the life of me, I could not remember the plot if it is a book I've read say a couple years ago but if I start reading it again I'll remember it at the second, damn it. I cannot re-read books even my favorite ones, I get bored because I already know what happens. And the worst is with new books I read that have similar plots to books I've read, I cannot help but feel that I already know what is going to happen and I heavily struggle to finish them. So yeah enjoy your blessed mind hahaha Isabel Allende has amazing books, I love La casa de los espiritus. I'm a Spanish speaker and I struggled understanding it hahaha it has so many hidden messages but in that case it helps to read about the author's life and the time period they had have to live through. Same with Gabriel Garcia Marquez, beautiful writing.

I also wonder does this happen to you too where you hate a character so much in a book that it literally makes you close the book, have like a little tantrum about how horrible they are or is it just me?

Huh you're not the only one. I recently read a trilogy and absolutely despised the MC, I had to stop reading several times because I was legit ready to push her off a cliff. (The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer) Please don't read that book if you want to keep your sanity. I regret wasting my time on it.

I don't necessarily forget the plot but I read soooo many books that they can get all jumbled. I do have a horrible time telling people what a book is about but the second I try to reread a book (unless it's been a decade) it all comes back. Which is why I don't like buying books because I won't reread them. :(

I actually got back into reading a few years ago by watching the first divergent movie and i loved it so much and just had to know what was going to happen so that book series holds a very special place in my heart😊😊💛

Omg same. Divergent series was the one who got me into reading. I went to a bookstore with my mom because she needed something for her job and I spotted Divergent trilogy on one of the shelves and decided to buy it because I loved the movies. The best decision ever. After that, I went to the bookstore again and bought like 10 books. The Mortal Instruments series being one of them, and so that's how I'm here after 3 years lol.

11:00 i felt the same exact way when I finished Marie Lu's The Midnight Star. The first book was so good in its worldbuilding it still is amazing to me. But at midnight star, it was the only book I ever really want to throw mid-reading to the end. I still have ptsd rage over it 🤣🤣

I also can't remember plots, characters etc after reading a book and this is so validating lol! one of my favorite quotes of all time is by Ralph Waldo Emerson, "I cannot remember the books I've read any more than the meals I have eaten; even so, they have made me"

▪I can relate to being shocked by the length of the books I've read when I finally see them in physical form. Its why I'm glad I mainly read via ebook format because there's so many amazing books I've read that I would've probably been put off by if I'd seen them physically. A majority of them are favorites too so it makes me sad to imagine the only reason I read them was because my brain can't compute ebook pages 😅 ▪ The editing for all the library shots, I'm-- 💀💀💀 mood tho ▪ Omg Thief Lord is totally the little brother to Six of Crows! No wonder I felt oddly nostalgic reading it but couldn't place why. Ooh, video idea if you ever need it: fave childhood books and their "older brother/sister" books 💖 Also, a big brother rec for Six of Crows: Lies of Locke Lamora. I don't remember if you've read it, I feel like you mentioned it before but I'm not sure. Its an adult fantasy. ▪ YES! When people ask me Mal or Darkling. I'm just like 'nikolai is right there tho.' 💖

13:09 - Same! love your answer, it is really a blessing sometimes, I can read any Sherlock Holmes story whenever I want and enjoy it all the same 👌 15:44 - Sounds unreliable... When I go to read a book I look forward to find new crushes in the characters, this is a basic requirement from the writers 😂

I'm currently a English lit student at University so I'm constantly reading something but I still feel like I'm not really reading. Its hard to find time to properly read something of my own choice with all the uni reading, so I totally understand the feeling of not having enough time to read and appreciate books.

My mother always used to say "You don't have to like every book you read but you have to finish all of them." when I didn't want to finish a book. So it stayed with me and I always finish the book I start unless it's a total waste of time.😂

I have a question, Cari. Hope you can answer it. What do you do when you encounter a spoiler? Do you continue reading the book? Encountered a spoiler while reading “Six of Crows” and am so frustrated. Don’t know if I can finish it now because I can’t get it out of my head. And it’s such a shame because I was really enjoying the book before encountering that spoiler. 😭😭😭

I normally cannot listen to people talk without any action, but your voice is just so calming and nice. I am quite young and trying to get more into reading, but my teachers are forcing me to do reading logs where you are required to read certain books and said books don't interest me. Did you have to go through this, and if you did, how did you not keel over from boredom?

thank you so much! and yes definitely! I didnt like soooo many of the books we had to read in school. The way I combatted that is I would read other books for fun at other times (I used to have to get to school really really early so I would be in the library for an hour just reading before classes^^) But also, you just have to be strong :') good luck!
