My go-to five star rec is always Megan Whalen Turner’s Queen’s Thief series. It’s so good, and it evolves a LOT as the characters themselves kind of grow up and mature. So it starts out as a book about a young man on a quest that feels like light, funny YA, and then by the end it’s like, nations and empires battling it out (but it’s still all about the characters). There are love stories, but little or no smut. It’s set in and ranges over a world that has Mediterranean inflections, with the main characters largely coming from a collection of essentially Greek city-states, and she does fun stuff with the mythology of the different countries, weaving in characters telling myths and fables at various points in the story. It’s very artful, and even I enjoyed it, and I’m usually bored silly by authors throwing in that kind of thing.

Which book in the series is your favorite? Mine is the third as Costis experiences what I experienced the first book and I enjoy reliving the surprise without the expectation of it while still expecting it. If that makes any sense.
@Best_Stressed
@Best_Stressed 10 ай бұрын
@@nataliereed295 The third is my favorite too! Yes, I love watching Costis figure things out. And also I just really like Costis, who is a sweetie - my second favorite is a little less clear but the fifth is definitely a contender (I like Kamet too). It's also one of the very few really great series that I felt stuck a satisfying landing. (I better stop discussing this because it will be impossible not to do spoilers.) Have you ever read Dorothy Dunnett? She wrote a series of historical fiction books set in the Renaissance called the Lymond Chronicles and I sometimes describe the Queen's Thief series as the YA equivalent of that series.

I read 2 five star books in a row too, which almost NEVER happens. First I listened to the audiobook of A River Enchanted (the audiobook is SO good, the narrator speaks in an accent and is really immersive). When it was over I cried, realized was part of a series, cried some more lol. Then I knew I was going to fall into a slump if I didn't start something super different right away. I listened to the audiobook of The Hollow Girls, which is just this very atmospheric YA mix of like kinda thriller/horror but also magic and OMG. I did not expect to love it as much as I did. Again, the narrator was just fantastic and really immersive. I've come to find that if I'm listening to an audiobook, the narration REALLY affects my experience.

It’s the first book in the Engelsfor trilogy, and if you like it then it’s definitely worth it to read the other two books (Fire and The Key). This isn’t Fantasy but if you want a 5 star read I highly recommend Not My Problem by Ciara Smyth, it is SO INSANELY GOOD I have reread it so many times. Also In the Lives of Puppets by TJ Klune. For me it wasn’t exactly a five star read because of the general tone of the book. I love TJ Klune‘s writing so much, the House in the Cerulean Sea was one of my favorite books ever, and I reread it a billion times, so I was very excited for his next two books, but both Under the Whispering Door and In the Lives of Puppets have been a little bit depressing to me. His world building, his characters, his writing and all his interesting little quirks are all really good, they just both felt a lot more somber in tone to me, but In the Lives of Puppets is so well written it’s really cool, and the characters are so endearing. If you don’t mind a slightly more somber tone then I would definitely recommend reading both Under the Whispering Door and In the Lives of Puppets!

I hope you’re having a great time in England! If you’re looking for a queer high fantasy rec, Thornfruit by Felicia Davin is great! It’s the first in a series of three (finished). She is also a super small indie author so her books haven’t gotten nearly as much attention as they should in my opinion lol :)

Hi Cari! I just finished The Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch. I enjoyed it so much but never see anyone talk about it. Would love to hear your opinion!
