when I was 9 or 8 I saved a bee by remembering a facebook post for helping exhausted bees by giving them sugar water. edit: only do this to bumble bees or bees that don't make honey because it is harmful to the honey as it dilutes it.

Bumble bees do make honey, but if it was just a one time thing feeding that bee was fine, it was probably just old. Just don’t leave bowls of sugar water out, it might cause the other bees to start using that since it’s easier than going from flower to flower, and that would cause them to make watery honey, which doesn’t have much nutrients in it, so it’s not very healthy for them. The sugar water thing was really just a Facebook rumor, but tons of people fall for those everyday, so it’s okay!

Butterfly Pavilion (United States-based invertebrate zoo) volunteer here! Thanks for taking this little one in, so many people wouldn't think twice about trying to improve an invertebrate's quality of life. Most of what you talked about was exactly right, and your set up looked great for a disabled butterfly such as the one you've got! An unflighted butterfly doesn't need as much space as most people would think to thrive, your enclosure is a good size. I'd just like to throw in a few notes for anyone reading through the comments ^-^ If you have to handle a butterfly, even an uninjured one (Removing it from your clothing as you go inside, etc), use a glove if you can (If you can't, just try to keep contact short and gentle) and use the "scissor grip". Take your index and middle finger, approach from behind, and place one on either side of the butterfly's four wings. Never pick them up by their body, and try to avoid any contact with their legs. When releasing, don't place them down on a surface if they're able to fly. Instead, gently toss and release. Butterflies taste with their feet and they're super sensitive, so placing them down on a surface or letting their feet touch your fingertips could damage them and significantly shorten their lifespan. Good luck!

I googled how you can tell m/f - Males have a small black spot on the top surface of the hindwing. Females do not. You can see the spot when the wings are open; sometimes it's faintly visible when the wings are closed, too. Males also have slightly thinner wing veins.

I love this! Especially with monarch's population going down, this is a nice video to share! I have a tip on watering them, though. Grab some marbles and put them in a shallow container (only enough to cover the bottom) and put some water in the container. The butterfly should be able to walk on the marbles while grabbing a quick sip of water without drowning! You can use this for bees too, and it's perfect for gardens!
@beakerling
@beakerling 3 жыл бұрын
While it is nice to think of helping a damaged monarch as helping the population, a damaged butterfly is never going to reproduce and oviposit again. If you want to help population decline of monarch butterflies, the better option is to plant native host species of the monarch butterfly in your garden and influence your own states decision-makers to make biodiversity a priority. Butterflies generally need two different types of plants, one for nectar in their adult butterfly stage and one for their caterpillars to eat. Please look up which plants are native in your state/province and are important for the monarchs, it really is the best way to help these magnificent creatures so they are not lost for our future generations.

Imagine loving butterflies but being mildly terrified of any insects (and especially spiders (ik they’re arachnids)) it’s so weird to hold a ladybug and be slightly scared of it - like somehow this is gonna kill me I can feel it. It’s highly irrational, but bugs - even butterflies - give me just enough of the creeps that I don’t touch them unless necessary lol.
@momoblood
@momoblood 3 жыл бұрын
@@arianavail It's almost the same in my case! I like the aesthetics of butterflies in anime or on art but if in real life one or a moth would even be in my vision perimeter i would freeze up! Same with crickets or grashoppers! I know they wont hurt me, but my soul leaves my body anyways!, but im fine with spiders lmao i dont know why i work like that! Im really happy that you can relate to me because everyone makes fun of me for that! :(

I was at my friend’s house once and we found an absolutely massive monarch butterfly on her window, inside the house. There was no way for it to go back outside so we spent like thirty minutes making a contraption to safely capture it and put it outside. I was very proud after because it worked out and the butterfly stuck around for a bit.

One time when I was walking home from school, a butterfly flew onto my skirt and I was like “O.o” cuz butterflies don’t usually do that, but then I noticed the wings were messed up just like the butterfly in this vid :( I took it home and kept it around for a little while. It couldn’t really fly so I just put it on a flower bouquet. After a little while I released the butterfly into the backyard where there’s lots of beautiful flowers. I put it on a rose but when I came to check the next day, it was gone... Oh and I also saved a caterpillar from a spiderweb...which also happened at school lol :,)

During summer I found a tiger swallowtail butterfly that had a bent wing, so I brought her in and cared for her for 1 month and 2 weeks. (Since they only live for about 2-3 weeks) That’s really crazy. I gave her sugar water and the day before she passed, I let her practice flying in my backyard,(which she can’t really fly) and I asked my mom if I could let her fly one more time today, and she said tomorrow. Tomorrow was the day we watched her pass away. My sister and I put her into resin and she still is on the desk in the living room. rest in piece Bumble!

I had a pet butterfly in 2016, also one that I found with a broken wing. He lived longer than the average life expectancy and was really cool. Thanks to him I overcame this little aversion i had towards butterflies and could learn a lot. Like that honey water is bad for them, as it can crystalize inside them and kill them, or that they taste with their feet. A butterfly heart and other organ positions (so I knew where to be extra careful i googled the anatomy) and so on.

They will guzzle the juice from cut up watermelon pieces with great alacrity! I think the red color probably helps them home in on it as well. I picked up a weakened straggler today on my way to work, took it in where it’s warm (I’m from michigan and it’s beginning to get cold) and left it in a container with a nice bit of melon. I observed it drinking from the fruit with extended proboscis; and not long after that the little animal was vigorously trying to escape its habitat so I took it outside. It began to rapidly shake; almost vibrating for a moment then flew off with what appeared to me to be more or less full strength! It cleared a road at an altitude of at least 12 feet then veered about 45 degrees and rose to about 40 feet and fluttered off out of sight! It was a very happy occasion. But it must make it all the way to Mexico- a journey that takes at least 1-2 months. I’m very proud to have helped the little animal and I enjoyed observing it during our brief period together. I hope it makes it to the big monarch gathering

I raise butterflies!!! the best thing for monarchs is a plant called milkweed. that is the best source of nutrients for them. also if an intact butterfly won’t fly, just put it in a plant. don’t bring it in!! it might be young and the wings might still be “drying” from the pupation stage

You saved a flutterby! I saved a Spooder last summer from drowning in the pool. He got better and lived in an unused, brand new trash can with some paper on the ground so I could see him. He stayed a day or two, and then I released him into the garden outside my complex. He was a Hacklemesh, and I named him Hecc. I hope he lived a nice life and told all his friends about the giant that saved him from the swimming pool.

I had a moth that had deformed wings and mouth parts. I fed them creeping trumpet flowers each day. They made a quite but audible slurping sound during each feeding. When JeffBob/JosefinaBarbara passed they were buried with flowers and fellow dead moths.

Thank you so much. Recently my step mom got one of those butterfly hatcheries of of amazon and when the caterpillars were forming their chrysalis one of them fell over breaking his wings and prevented legs from being formed. Yesterday we let the rest go and I took in the disabled one and I haven't had him for long but Im not ready for him to die. He has crushed wings and only 3 legs and only 2 of them work properly. I didn't know whether it was better to keep him or let him go but now that I know im doing the right thing I want to give him his best life. While knowing that he can barely move to eat he wont live long but I want to try and make the best of it.

I saved many monarch butterfly’s from OE and one I remember loved for about 6 months after I found her (OE is a disease in monarch butterflies where it cripples the wings and makes it so they can’t fly)

I’ve just watched this after many searches to help a grounded butterfly, thank you!… it does what it says on the tin👍 I’m in North Yorkshire and clearing my outhouses 2weeks ago I came across quite a few healthy ones that took off but I have this one and she’s lasting a while🦋💜

I took care of a butterfly for a while, I mixed a bit of sugar with some water and put it in a cotton ball, I also got a bit of dirt and put it with some water and rocks because what I found when I looked it up was that butterflies find puddles and get nutrients from them. The butterfly later on flew off with some coaxing

i remember when at my school there was this kid and he really mistreated monarch butterflys by holding them by the wings and me and my friends would sit where most of the butterflys were and would make sure he wouldn't get to them.

Monarch butterflies are so rare where I live at. I never find monarch butterfly in th summer, mainly because I live in Brandenburg Kentucky and where I live there are lots and lots of houses and buildings being built and it destroys the trees where monarch butterflies love to rest.

If you ever find a butterfly who’s wings have not unfolded, DO NOT PUT THEM UPRIGHT! The gravity will push their wings down and they will stay like that, so they wont be able to fly. Just leave them alone and check on them after a bit.
