Technically we still don’t know exactly what happened. We’re not sure if Ellie was barren or if she suffered a miscarriage. Although I’m leaning more towards the latter since it makes more sense to prepare a nursery AFTER you conceive. But yeah, I didn’t watch this movie until I was an adult, so by the time I saw it, I pretty much got the gist of it all. Still heartbreaking to watch such a great marriage go through so many tough moments.
@elianrodriguez7318
@elianrodriguez7318 2 ай бұрын
@@twelved4983it’d make more sense if it was the former case since if it was the latter (miscarriage) then they could’ve always tried again to conceive another child despite the trauma that came from the initial miscarriage whereas in the latter’s case (barren) there’d be no point in trying to conceive a child and that’s where the Adventure Book came into play since now they have no other life goals.
@twelved4983
@twelved4983 2 ай бұрын
@@elianrodriguez7318 on second thought, that makes more sense. Just thought it would’ve been a little too ambitious/hasty to have prepared a nursery before they even knew they were having a kid in the first place.
@elianrodriguez7318
@elianrodriguez7318 2 ай бұрын
@@twelved4983 they only started making it when they got the idea during the picnic which was before they started making the nursery, the scenes went in this order: picnic with baby clouds (that’s when they decided they wanted a baby) ➡️ started making the nursery ➡️ they get the bad news. In other words they knew that they wanted a baby, the problem was that they couldn’t have one *after* *trying* their shot at one.

Carl and Ellie remind me of a couple my parents were close friends with during my childhood. They were also a very happy couple and seemed like they would have made great parents. The husband was always playful and cheery whenever he’d play with me and his wife was always very motherly and cooked a lot. Yet sadly they never had kids since the wife had fertility issues and couldn’t adopt since it was too expensive. It’s been years since I last saw them and I hope they’re doing well.

Jeez, “too expensive to adopt”, that sounds awful. There are multitudes of kids needing families and MONEY is being used as a deciding factor to gatekeep? I mean, I know there have to be some restrictions to keep out people who are not psychologically capable of handling parenthood, but using cash barriers by the government just feels wrong.

There are doctorate dissertations and academic classes dedicated just to this segment. No dialog, no human actors -- just music and CGI. And we care. Our disbelief is suspended and we are all-in, because the motions and emotions are so understandable and universal. This is an amazing piece of cinema -- and a great test for how empathetic we are.

I remember watching this movie as a 9 or 10 or something like that year old with my dad in the cinema when it came out. When the movie was over he asked me what I thought of it and I said that I liked it but I didn't like that the two of them grew old so quickly. He replied something along the lines of how that is the point. It's an interesting memory considering how much I appreciate this scene now, so many layers to it that you get to understand better as you grow older.
