Gotta love the Of Mice and Men dynamic they used here with Carl and Nick (George and Lennie). Right down to the dream of the farm and subsequent loss of that dream due to the character's temper/violent outbursts.

Lennie didnt have violent outbursts, he was a complete innocent. The world always treated him as an incapable child and thats how he thought of himself, he didnt understand his own strength.
@needtoread7760
@needtoread7760 Ай бұрын
@@natcole5981 (sorry, novel incoming!) I don't mean intentionally violent--as George constantly reaffirms, with everything Lennie does, none of it is done with malice or "meanness." Rather, it is more in line with a child showing an angry/frustrated outburst. As we get older, we get better at managing our emotions, and likewise, impulses, but Lennie is incapable of doing so, which is why he is still innocent. Likewise, Nick, while certainly not innocent in the conventional sense, is still tragically empathetic since he is a product of his environment and past circumstances, incapable of rising above the trauma and violent coping strategies life has dealt him. Definitely a very different character from Lennie, but the dynamic between him and Carl felt familiar with a slight nod perhaps to Steinbeck, but still very much its own thing.

Nick even said it, it was not about the bike. As a kid, he had a bike that he own but his dead beat drug addict of a dad stole it from him and sold it. He loved that bike because I think when he rides it he got nothing to worry about and is free. I think that what the bike represent, his freedom. So when his bike got stolen, he may have felt his freedom being stolen. Again. He killed the kid as to reclaim his freedom but in reality it's what going to cost his freedom. Sad part was, it was never shown if the kid really stole his bike or somebody stole his bike and sold it to the kid.

For those who don't watch show I'll explain Turns out kid was given bike by someone who wanted one night stand with mother... Kid was abused and finally happy he got a sliver of hope that was a bike... The guy was gone for at least a week and forgotten. The kids last words were "hey mister look at my awesome bike! I took off the sparkles though" of course the man with hammer was part of the sparkle gang and snapped when he heard the kid disrespected the gang colors... He was still the same wild Carl for sure, but I do think this moment softened his heart quite a bit in subtle ways. He was much more conscious of being a good brother and contributor to the house. I have not sat down and watched a full episode of shameless I’ve just seen bits and pieces so I don’t know why cause these clips keep showing up on my Facebook algorithm. They keep showing up on Instagram. I have no fucking idea why. but I did search this because this clip popped up on Facebook. I did look up the synopsis of the show so I know all about Carl’s gang life and drug dealing phase. I really wanna say this was a wake up call this was him truly seeing mental illness and childhood trauma for what the fuck it was. Let this had been retaliation from another gangbanger not justified either but understandable. This was all over a bike And he even told him it’s not worth it. Let him just took the bike back and maybe smashed up the windows and robbed the house for the last little bit of money, that we get. But he literally killed a child for that bike. I mean, he had already explained that his father beat him as a child for asking for a bike and then when he saved up his own money and got to buy himself, his father stole it and sold it. And he got locked up for brutally assaulting his father. And all he cared about was getting that fucking bike back. At least Nick did the right thing called the police and turned himself in. I’m assuming we never saw him again after this. Because there is definitely no coming back. I hate that this had to be Carl’s wake up call to get his life together. I know the series ends with him becoming a cop which is great. He can help people like Nick.
