Carl Jung's Transcendent Function
The Transcendent Function is a psychological function that Carl Jung discusses in his work The Structure and Dynamics of the Psyche. The transcendent function, according to Carl Jung, is the union of the conscious and unconscious contents, and the corresponding experience that comes through such a union. The transcendent function is a kind of 'higher order' function or process that is made up of psychological 'base elements' and processes, such as the unconscious and conscious. Carl Jung sought to 'induce' the transcendent function in his patients to help them gain an insight (psycho-dynamic term) that would in turn deliver a new attitude to the patient. There is nothing 'mystical' about the transcendent function, rather, it is a process that allows a shift from one attitude to another, allowing for personality transformations to take place. However, Carl Jung reveals that the aim of the alchemist was to bring about the transcendent function and transmute the personality from one state to another. Thank you so much for this video. I was retrenched at the beginning of this month (Dec 2020), initially, I was in such shock and was bewildered (after working for this company for 10 years) but knew I had to find the message in the outward mess of what this announcement meant. I've been a student of Jungian philosophy for many years now and knew that the Transcendent Function would help me navigate this development so watched your video to remind myself of what I need to work with. After listening to your video I had my insight; this retrenchment is a not a dissolution, but rather, an opportunity for construction of a new identity. A new identity that will take me into the new future. In that instant, I had a complete feeling of peace and serenity wash over me and I knew, I KNOW, I will be okay. The standstill of anxiety is now overcome, and my life can flow on with renewed power towards new goals, and that is the gift of the retrenchment. As my late Jung teacher, Martin de Chatillion de Coque, used to say, look always for the "SUPERIOR REPLACEMENT" in all situations. Thank you once again for a very well put together presentation on what is a very complex subject.

One of the biggest psychological issues I have had to deal with over a very long time was in relationship to my father. We obviously had very different personalities. I was extremely open, creative, pursuing visual and performing arts, etc. INFP He was very strict, disciplined his career training was originally military, then he became a journeyman and was the last generation to learn traditional typesetting and worked as the proof manager for a newspaper. His job was high pressure for perfection. Meaning if he did not see the errors in a proof an entire printing run would need to be done over. So high stress. I was INFP and he probably ISTJ or ESTJ. But essentially polar opposite in regards to the psychological functions that had developed. He was also an alcoholic and had a definite split in his personality and would go into fits of rage. So for me as an adult there was also a split in the personality, where I mostly cut off the attributes I associated with him. Those psychological functions were in the unconscious. There were times were it was easy to pull together the two halves and accomplish creative discipline. But as an adult I would encounter other adults who would provoke strong negative feelings. Which were an encounter with the suppressed unconscious contents that were difficult to integrate. In my experience the transcendent function was activated when both the psychological functions I identified with and those that were suppressed came together. Because this was a literal coming together of attributes of the father and attributes of the son. I can’t help but to interpret the phenomenon in a Christian way: „I and the father are one“. But it should be noted that traditionally in Christianity if you said that statement it would be heretical, that is if the idea was you were one with God (rather than a father figure). There are certainly other ways a person can and will experience the transcendent function depending on what contents are pushed into the unconscious but for me this exemplifies one experience.

Being polar opposite does not mean being different types. Your dad could be a different subtype than you of INFP, the SiTe for example.

INFP here! Same sort of condescending prick father, who gave me a similar complex that my ego was identified with since childhood, so I couldn't even see it, but I certainly felt it. I knew I was overcompensating in relationships and an unexpected rejection JUST AS I LEANED IN and was wide open vulnerable, by her hidden complex no less, which triggered me badly, and I met the complex and got to withdraw the projection and hold the opposites in consciousness. Then my head exploded in an insanely emotional kundalini type of awakening. I presume your being an INFP implies you had quite a bit of emotional affect held in consciousness as well? I believe that sort of shapes the experience into a religious context. My world went gray, when the awakening happened, an amber hue. The shift in attitude for me was a new awareness of energies, emotional energies, vibes, from people where I'd notice if I was getting masculine energy from a women, etc. "In my experience the transcendent function was activated when both the psychological functions I identified with and those that were suppressed came together." Basically you established a new relationship with your unconscious while reconciling opposites within a complex. Its' a beautiful thing! Basically, there an increase of information/energy that can come form the unconscious to you. Intuition is important for that in regard to acausal connections, aka synchronicities. I've gotten more of those, pretty spooky at times lol. " „I and the father are one“." The father represents the unconscious. I would say 'in communion with'. Consider learning about archetypes, libido, and instincts if you haven't. That's where a lot of development will still occur, led by libido. There's magic, I"m telling ya. It's our type with it's emotional affect, assuming your like me and project a lot of emotional meaning into your narratives in the past. That emotional affect IS a language of the unconscious, and meaning is how it's interpreted. Jung to live by YT channel is pretty in depth but I've gotten the best insights from htere. Cheers brother!

@@robertdabob8939 Myers Briggs is quackery; it´s especially idiotic to mention this under a video that explains how the psyche is divided in conscious and subconscious when the Myers Briggs treats the unconscious/subconscious as non existent. The MBTI is like a horoscope for people who think of themselves to be too smart to believe in horoscopes.

@@chrisf1604 Speaking of idiotic, I guess you're oblivious to the fact that MBTI is based on Jungs personality types? Do you ahve any understanding of Myers Briggs beyond the shallow online tests for the corporate world? Familiar with the cognitive function stack? Wtf does it mean to say that MBTI treats the unconscious as nonexistent when it's not exactly relevant to the conscious mind, and ego personality? I've heard depth psychology suggest that when the unconscious acts on the conscious mind, causing it to become unstable fro example, it's operating thought the inferior function. Our most 'unconscious' function. Makes sense. Astrology deals with the intuitive realm which includes the more subtle, irrational experiences, like acausal connections. These are considered communications from the unconscious in the same way dreams are. Also from Jung's work.

@@robertdabob8939 Dude, in the academic world, the MBTI is deemed pseudoscience. It is not being used in psychology, it has massive methodical flaws (why is someone with an introverted score of 51% an "I", but someone with a score of 49% is an "e" when both literally behave the same?), it is literally impossible to be an asshole in the MBTI, the test-retest has about 50% of people reaching a different "personality type", the MBTI cannot produce reliable results that can predict behaviour....short: this is dumb pseudoscience, even if it is based on Jungian psychology...but I already told you why the MBTI is inferior, because Jung added the unconscious whereas the MBTI treats the unconscious as nonexistent. Enjoy your pseudoscience, but don´t try to make rational people believe the MBTI is in any shape or form legit...it is barely more than a horoscope.

I had this exact numinous experience with the withdrawal of an emotionally charged projection coming from a complex. It was a while after before I figured out what happened, but I immediately described the new attitude as being a new awareness of energy where emotions weren't experienced as anything happening to me anymore. But rather whenever anything came into consciousness I'd want to pay close attention, and it'd immediately bring me back to the present moment. In other words, a new relationship with the unconscious! It appears the habitual use of logical reasoning I'd developed is what made me instinctively notice and hold the opposing contradictory states in consciousness. What a terrible feeling. I fully understood why I said what I said, but it was the projection of a complex, so the withdrawal of the projection meant consciously I was right, but unconsciously I was wrong. Then my head exploded. 😁

Hi Elizabeth, thanks for reaching out. I am deeply sorry to hear what happened to your friend and yourself. PTSD is a serious condition and I'd recommend you see a psychologist about it to help guide you to process what you've been through. You said you don't know how to feel or what is 'normal' and so you may be feeling out of touch with life and is a sign you still need to process what happened. I really hope you do get the support you need, don't be afraid to go to a professional who knows how to deal with these kinds of experiences. Again, I am sorry to hear what has happened and I wish you the absolute best.

Congratulations in simplifying one of the most complicated ideas. However, I will point out that you say 'kind of' and 'um' too much. They are verbal clicks that you could get rid of. I actually don't give a fuck about them because the content was so good. I have been meaning to watch your videos for a while but I have been reading Jung's lectures on Nietzsche. I know that you are also interested in Nietzsche. I thought that you might be interested in the end of Thus Spoke Zarathustra, where something like the transcendent function appears. Nietzsche / Zarathustra has a dream, where he walks to the edge of the Earth. The land represents the conscious and the ocean the unconscious. Jung goes on to describe the roll that God / gods play in this. I thought that you might find this interesting. As God moves from a religious dogmatic idea to something that is ours. The transcendent function appears throughout Thus Spoke Zarathustra in the roll of the ubermensch but I find this part at the end particularly interesting. I think that your video is amazing. There is no one else out there doing this sort of thing.
