Sagan was central to the discovery of the high surface temperatures of the planet Venus.
In the early 1960s, no one knew for certain the basic conditions of Venus' surface and Sagan listed the possibilities in a report later depicted for popularization in a Time-Life book, Planets - his own view was that the planet was dry and very hot, as opposed to the balmy paradise others had imagined.
He had investigated radio emissions from Venus and concluded that there was a surface temperature of 500 °C (900 °F). As a visiting scientist to NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, he contributed to the first Mariner missions to Venus, working on the design and management of the project. Mariner 2 confirmed his views on the conditions of Venus in 1962.
This video shows an interview with him before the first missions to Venus in 1960 or 1961.

(2) () would start raining in the upper atmosphere, cooling down the atmosphere even further and in time the rain would reach the ground. I am not sure about the mechanism of why it would not work but this is one idea that still amazes me.

yeah, its a constant cycle from upper to lower atmosphere going thru sulfur dioxide, atomic oxygen, sulfur trioxide, water vapor, acid rain, etc,.... but I thought dropping there a load of Rolaids would break the cycle. :) I think the only thing impossible is to fully comprehend the possibilities of the universe. But for now I honestly understand your point.

Yes, it still airs on the Science Channel. It may be Tues. evenings and repeats on Wed. mornings. Don't hold me to it. They change programming often.

(1) In my teen years I read an article, Im almost sure from Sagan, saying that it was possible to cool down the planet Venus by bombarding and loading its upper atmosphere with blue-green algae which are very resistant and ferocious devourers of carbon-dioxide. As it multiplied and consumed the upper layers, it would naturally release oxygen, continuously falling to the layers bellow in the process, and with less and less carbon dioxide the heat entrapment would continuously decrease, ()

I did not know he died until a few weeks ago. I had been watching his show Cosmos every week.

I dont know how they (blue-green algae) would survive. I just read somewhere long ago about this idea and Im quite sure was from Sagan. The bulk of Venus atmosphere is C02 but if the acid rain was to be of any problem I bet Sagan would had applied some extremofiles to his cocktail. They survive in unimaginable environments. Dont we...?

sounds good to me, let's do it!!! We need planets to colonize in the universe....you know, I always took Sagan to be a genius but it was just more than that, its Brilliant!!!

The temperatures are so hot that there is likely not be nothing alive not even small molecules. But in Islam, the Jinn (Djinn) are made of Fire and travel extremely fast. The Seen and Unseen.
