Carl Weathers has died. He was 76. The 'Rocky' star's family confirmed the news to ET. In a statement, they reveal Weathers died in his sleep on Thursday. While known to many as Apollo Creed, Rocky Balboa's foe turned friend across the hit franchise, Weathers became a pop culture fixture after 'Predator,' plus his comedic turns in 'Happy Gilmore' and 'Arrested Development.' On 'The Mandalorian,' Weathers pulled double duty while playing Greef Karga and stepping behind the camera as a director.

I know man it sucks. I was so so so shocked to hear this news. But then again he lived a very long life and he is at peace so I can easily accept his death but at the same time I wish he still lived.

I had the pleasure of meeting Carl Weathers once years ago at Ottawa Comiccon. He was easy to talk to, he seemed like a good man to be around, and I told him how much the character of Apollo Creed has impacted a lot of people! Rest in peace, sir! 🥊

I copied this from my best friend's post about Carl on his FaceBook page because I couldn't say it any more succinct or perceptive.: A lot will be said about Carl Weathers, and like so many of my generation, I’m still processing the news of his passing. His iconic place in our culture as the antagonist to Rocky cannot easily be measured. And I say antagonist, because for me, and millions of others, Apollo Creed was never the villain. I never rooted against Apollo, I was just rooting FOR Rocky. And that is the truly extraordinary power and charm Carl Weathers brought to that iconic performance. He was over-the-top, cocky, arrogant, a magnificent showman, a world champion, but did all of it with a twinkle in his eye. In his career, he often played obstacles to the heroes, but he was never cruel, unlikable, or ugly in his performances and when you’re playing antagonists, that is not an easy road. I remember, as I’m sure so many of my generation do, shadow boxing in my imagination with Carl Weathers, to that iconic music, summoning all my strength to make it the distance… so many of my generation wanted to fight him or be him. But never did we hate him. Just sit with that incredible thought for a moment. And you will remember why that first Rocky film will forever stand as one of the greatest films ever made. Rocky’s character arc required a mountain to overcome, and Carl Weathers was an Everest. Rest in Peace, icon of the screen and millions of young kids’ dreams.

I'm so sad about this. He LOVED what he was doing in The Mandalorian, being someone who didn't just act but directed. 76 seems too young. He was such a treasure of a resource to the people he worked with. He will be deeply missed by many different fandoms. What an incredible, outstanding good man to lose.

Really shocking and tragic celebrity death. I loved him in so manu places such as Rocky, Predator, The Mandalorian, Happy Gilmore and Toy Story! I was supppsed to meet at Galaxycon Richmond in March 2024 before this. RIP. Condolences goes to his family and friends. A true legend.
