Following on from my last camera lens video :
"My Carl Zeiss Zebra Tessar is sharper than both of my Black Tessar's"
I decided to clean and service my Black Tessar to see if it would make a difference to its sharpness, I videoed the whole process, and then I took a photo with the lens after cleaning it, to compare the before and after image.
Both images were taken using the same lens, looking at the same scene, using similar camera settings.
This is a really long and boring video, you can slide to the part you are interested in.

This afternoon I was stripping an old Pentagon lens when two of the aperture blades sprang out of the lens. After several attempts at putting them back without fail the whole lot nearly ended in the bin. That evening came across your wonderful video and watched every second of it. Beautifully explained through every stage and now I am ready to have a more informed go at it. Thankyou. Ken

because i had a sticky tessar i had no choice but to attempt this cleaning...i know i would not have been able to do it without your video so Thank You for doing it...the lens leaf part was the most difficult to do; they jump off with the slightest nudge...i never want to do this again LOL...

Yes, It isn't something I look forward to doing, I have done it two or three times before it's a lot of effort, but can be rewarding.

Superb! The way you talk it through is super helpful - so many of these videos are just speeded up and almost impossible to follow - I have a Pancolar with a stuck aperture that I'm plucking up the courage to tackle - your video will be extremely helpful as these lenses are very similar.

Thanks, I do have a zebra Pancolar that needs some work, so I probably will video the repair for anyone interested at some point in time.

@@pixelvalve Oh that would be wonderful - I may hang on for that as I'm not that experience and I really don't want to balls it up. Thanks again for the way you really take the time on these.

Thanks for this video. It's great to see someone actually working on repairing lenses. I think people are normally terrified of opening up a lens. A while back I picked up a box of CCTV lenses for cheap. I bought the box for a couple manual aperture lenses that were in the box, but I also got a small pile of lenses with electronic aperture control that are basically useless on anything but a CCTV camera. With nothing to lose, I took them apart to remove the iris mechanisms. Being able to go into a lens without fear of damaging a good lens really helped with my confidence, and understanding the anatomy of a lens has been helpful too. I'd recommend that anyone that wants to get into repairing lenses start by finding some cheap CCTV lenses and taking them apart.

You should compare the images with room lighting on items, and not landscape. The light differs in times which is meaningless.

I agree, I just didn't have a big enough room for infinity focus.

I would guess it's not always economically viable to repair vintage lenses as a service. I would base everything on GBP30 per hour labour, and imagine some problems could easily cost more to fix than the cost of a new lens. If you lived next door to me, I would say, I will have a look at it, but it's not so easy to do that online.

@@pixelvalve I simply cant find anyone here in the States or maybe I am not looking in the right places. I can buy another lens on eBay but chances are most of them need service anyway.

@@132indo Have you tried facebook groups, they are the best place to find local lens repair. It would cost a fortune to send them to the UK
