Carla Fracci and Roberto Bolle dance Le Spectre de la rose, 1998

Carla Fracci (61) and 23-year-old Roberto Bolle danced at the Toyko Summer Music Festival dedicated to Diaghilev and 20th Century Ballet. Here are two performances on 9 and 10 July 1998 of Le Spectre de la rose.
On Bolle's 40th birthday, Fracci said:
"I have been very fond of Roberto Bolle for many years… twenty? twenty-five?
We’ve danced various ballets together and, several years ago, at the World Ballet Festival in Tokyo, we danced a ballet that is emblematic for me, Le Spectre de la rose, which I performed for my diploma on leaving La Scala’s Ballet School. It was in March 1955 after a performance of La sonnambula with Maria Callas when I danced it with the great Mario Pistoni. Forty-three years later, in 1998, I danced it with Roberto."

I can’t believe she was 62 when performing this ! I hope I can still walk gracefully when I turn 62, let alone dancing !

BRAVO!!!BRAVISSIMO!!! VIVA LA FRACCI!!! VIVA BOLLE!!! Dear Carla, I saw you dance all the performances of this famous ballet with the GREATEST interpreter of the Rose PAOLO BORTOLUZZI with American Ballet Theatre when you were Prima Ballerina. I also saw the performances with MICHEL DENNARD. What stands out for me in this post Carla is how you went back in time to relive your stage magic and elegance to the famous girl discovering love for the first time. You are a great ASSOLUTA del ballet clásico. ROBERTO, I'm happy to see how you lived in the choreographed Fokine version and the one PAOLO BORTOLUZZI did on stage, with the exception of the very end omitting the demi penché and kiss. Your masculine, sensual flirtation in this famous role is essential and emotionally connected to the girl with the crush. I feel PAOLO was spiritually in your rehearsals. BRAVO!!! ROBERTO!!! Hated the costume and surprised Carla allowed it!!! Cheers

I really liked it. I have seen many beautiful, languid and delicate versions, where two girls seem to dance. In this version, bolle dances covering Carla Frachi, making the turns and Pa de Deux as a tribute to the girl. I have no doubt that Bolle could have been langided, delicate and full of petals but he didn't wan to. I liked it.

Definatley. He danced it his way and wasnt trying to take anything away from her beautiful performance. Great respect for the way he took on this role. not the sort of role imagined him dancing. Great😊

Thank you for the correction! Yes Fracci made a mistake in saying that it was the World Ballet Festival - in fact, it was the Tokyo Summer Festival a year later.

Thank you so much for uploading this. What a rarity! Roberto Bolle is wonderful in this role. His hands and arms emulate the opening and close of the rose petals. Why does he always get called upon to dance with ballerinas past their prime, which is the case here with Carla Fracci, who was a great ballerina, but is way to old for this role in 1998. Well, at least she is better than Lillian Gish with Patrick Dupont.

the scenery, the stage set, the lights and costumes are not very beautiful fo say the least, it's awful ,and Roberto Bolle is trying his best to bring magic to this version of " le Spectre de la Rose"

This was in Japan in 1998 and Carla Fracci was one of the biggest names that were known internationally for so long at the time. Japanese will come to admire her for essentially non dancing role or even just a personal appearance. Remember it was before YT so you can only get a glimpse of famous stars. Japan was know for stars to visit when they're past their prime be it dance or opera. And Roberto was up and coming star at the time (in Japan)so it was a good strategy for the promoters to make him known to Japanese ballet fans.

@DavidAsset Awww, c'mon. Lillian Gish and Patrick Dupond were about as nostalgically touching as you can get. So what if Gish wasn't a dancer; she projected a sweetness that straight from the nineteen 'teens. And no one surpasses the late Dupond in his ability to channel Nijinsky's Spirit. NO ONE. That having been said, I really love this as well even though Bolle as tremendously gifted as he is, is not a dancer who projects sensuosity in his movement; he is an ATHLETE, not Fokine's roseate atmospheric ESSENCE. All that aside, these are two fine dancers beautifully cast

The 8th World Ballet Festival Tokyo was held in 1997 and the 9th was held in 2000, so I think this video is another performance.🤔

Nothing of the sensual seduction emanating of Paolo Bortoluzzi with Fracci. Bolle’s arms and body are stiff. He is just concentrated in himself and the rose’s perfume is not filling the room and making the girl dream. A role for very few dancers.

He should have been the star, he dances the title role, but the choreographer made a mess of it and made of the supporting character the main character.

Choreography of this ballet has been unchanged, always original Fokine so the perception is due to bad performance

The best spectre de la rose was that one danced by Manuel Legris. But the choreography in this version is very dull.

You might like to read about this ballet, it's the same exact original choreography.. has never been changed by anyone, only dancers' interpretation gives illusion of a change and this one is really bad (the spirit, Bolle is awful)

@@BytomGirl yes, he is awful in it, quite disappointing. In other ballets he is wonderful. I loved Manuel Legris' version. Fokin (the choreographer) allowed for a certain freedom in the choreography. I've seen quite a few versions. This is the only ballet in which I haven't enjoyed Bollet's dancing. He is always awesome, except in this one.

@@AlejandroGarcia-ek3uy I am not a big fan of Bolle to be truthful, he always seems to have the same empty look on his face, lacking in expression department. I love this ballet performed by Nikolai Tsiskaridze and Zhanna Ayupova (they both run now Vaganova Academy) and earlier with Nadezhda Pavlova. I love him in many other ballets, great technique, elegance and amazing expression. He has danced a lot in Paris also and regularely at Mariinsky even though he was premier of Bolshoi. Legris is good too and so was Hilaire, Le Riche, Bullion, Paquiette , Ganio and Marchant. I really liked Angel Corella, he was amazing.

@@BytomGirl Angel Corella, yes. But his height and face (too common looking) make him unfit for main roles. I prefer him in secondary roles. For example, his interpretation of the golden idol in La Bayadere is out-of-this-world. Don't you think?

@@AlejandroGarcia-ek3uy No I don't. He was a beautiful and expressive dancer in every respect and there is nothing common about him and Bolle should never even be compared to him. He was perfect as Siegfried and was amazing in DQ and other things. To me Bolle is common looking, that face with a zombie look.

Roberto Bolle è sempre meraviglioso ma questo non è il suo ruolo migliore . Penso sia anche il costume a limitarlo nei movimenti perché sembra più rigido del solito. Peccato perché viste le sue qualità atletiche da giovane avrebbe potuto fare di più . In ogni caso non è una performance a definirlo .

@@BytomGirl I'm surprised by a new comment after 5 months... are you bored? Roberto Bolle does not have to worry. I saw "Le Spectre de la Rose", for the first time, almost 70 years ago and I understood that it was a fantasy and The Spectrun reminded the young woman of her first dance with a man, and perhaps her first kiss, that's all. The interpretation of Bolle seemed magnificent tu mi... you think differently... I congratuled you.
