She was awesome. Perfectly spooky and mysterious, yet still has a bit of an underlying personality outside of just being the Raven. Mark's writing is good and his shows put you through so many emotions. Of course, the casting is also brilliant, with each actor really bringing their roles to life.

She’s the reason why I watched this show lol. I didn’t know it was by the same guy who made Haunting of hill house and all those shows. So I saw her and just knew it would be good. Then I found out who the director was and KNEW

That's it, finally a confirmation. Her character isn't evil, it exists outside of ethics and morale. So as Carla mentioned, the best way to explain her is Fate, which is amazing. I also love that in Flanagan's last series for Netflix, she portays, from my perspective the main protagonist, as we can all agree that Usher's are everything but that.

The Ushers, particularly Roderick and Madeline, are definitely protagonists. Protagonists aren't required to be good people. A protagonist is, by definition, the main character who makes key decisions that affect the plot and move it forward. As the story is told from Roderick's perspective, he is the main protagonist, and as Madeline makes many key decisions that directly affect the plot, she is also a main protagonist. Similarly, an antagonist isn't necessarily a villain. The antagonist is the character that challenges the protagonist of the story and presents them with difficulties or obstacles.

Verna sells the series more than anything, I feel like some of the stronger characters died at the beginning, but I love the way they play out entirely.

@@skylarconstantine99 I personally think Camille's death was the worst. She was struggling so much before dying, you can see all the bloody mess she made while being killed by the monkey. On the other hand, I think the most creepy death was Vic's, by hearing all those tics for days and made her partner's heart as a sample was way way disturbing.

I never doubted Carla Gugino was a good actress, but she totally blew the roof off this series (figuratively and literally). Just a seriously phenomenal performance; heartfelt, sexy, terrifying, funny, and sinister. It's a shame that the awards industry is so biased against the horror genre, 'cause Carla deserves to take home something very shiny that she can place next to that bust of Pallas above her chamber door.

The series was wonderful! Everyone played their part perfectly, but I loved the performances by Gugino (Verna), Lumbly (Dupin), Greenwood (Roderick), McDonnell (Madeline) and Hamill (Pym) the most! Absolutely superb performances all around!

Her rendition of "The City in the Sea" is one of the most powerful I have ever seen. Of course it is combined with a series of different elements, Mary McDonnell's acting as well, but it is for me, what defined Verna's character. As much as the monologue at the end of Hill House, that scene is, for me, the center of this entire baroque homage to the momentous work of Edgar Allan Poe. Congratulations to everyone.

You should see Gerald's Game! It's also directed by Flanagan and Carla is the protagonist, with Bruce (Roderick) playing her husband, and both Kate (Camille) and Henry (Frederick) also having roles in it.

We recently bingewatched this entire series. We then watched Haunting at Blye Manor, which Carla plays a small part in while doing all the voiceover work. She is amazing in both shows. I have always found some actors to be vastly under appreciated. Carla Gugino is one of these. Even when they try to age her with wigs and makeup, she is still classically beautiful, and her voice holds you enthralled. There are a great many Character actors in the world that far surpass some Oscar winners in range and skill. And often that kind of actor is able to convey a feeling with much more subtlety than their more lauded colleagues. I guess that is my long winded way of saying Carla is an amazing screen presence.

Gugino's portrayal of Verna is a perfect blend of mystery and menace. Her character fits very neatly with the Irish folklore goddess of death and destiny - The Morrígan. A shape shifting mythological being who controls the fate and type of death of her chosen ones. Also, she is represented by a crow or RAVEN!😉

I thoroughly enjoy Mike Flanagan’s work. I love his emphasis on the screenplay & the strong emotional weight he incorporates to the story. All of his shows so far have compelling dialogues and well-written lines. He should do definitely write and direct a film. His talent would certainly benefit the horror genre by potentially receiving awards recognition.

The way I see it, it's also about where you go after death. I would love to believe that Lorna went a place of light and love, which is Heaven for me. And the others, I think you know where they went

the point is that all had been decided by Madeline and Roderick on that night on New Year's Eve 1979, however she gave them a choice as to how it would go based on their actions. Frederick is a prime example because Verna even says that there were so many ways she could have taken him out but because of what he chose to do to Morrie, she made sure his death was full of pain and suffering.

A phenomenal cast. Clever, clever riff on Poe. There were many singular, granular moments of brilliance but my favorite was the not-so-subtle reference to the putrid Trump in the final episode. Wondering aloud here…do you think any of the Sackler cabal watched this and recognized themselves?
