Reviews of clothing, boots, and accessories for men, along with style advice and life philosophy. I've been working with my hands for my entire life as a mechanic, tow truck driver, and eventually a licensed electrician. Being a blue collar guy, I look for certain elements in a product: is it durable? Is it high-quality? Will it perform well over its service life? Whether boots, pants, jackets, or tools I believe it's best to buy once and cry once by getting the best you can afford. With so many options these days, choosing the best product can become a difficult decision, but that's where I come in. Helping you stay stylish, rugged, and handsome.
I don't care where it's made as long as it's made well, and allows you to buy less and buy better.

My advice to anyone who wants a pair of boots now but can't afford them is wait. Save up instead of buying a pair and being disappointed. You will be so much happier when you get that pair you really wanted. I wanted some Iron Rangers for years but didn't want to dish out 300 plus dollars. I finally made some side money and got a pair. I'm so glad I did. They are absolutely amazing boots and they just get better by the month. Save up and get the ones you want.

Well, to be fair, it isn't as if you have a choice if, for example, winter is coming and your current boots are shot, to just go barefoot for another couple of months. But I get it. You get what you pay for, and you should get the right tool for the job. So if, for example, you need good work boots, don't bother with a casual boot as it will fall apart sooner rather than later.

If you have insurance you can get boots or shoes from an orthotic store. These cost several $100s. And the insole is usually custom.

I paid the equivalent of $700 USD to a local bootbaker to make me a custom pair. Best thing I ever did, so worth it. I picked chromexcel exterior, kangaroo interior, veg tan inner soles, and Daynite soles. Goodyear welt, old Czech army design. Doesn't get any better IMO, and the feeling of having a boot designed exactly to your foot dimensions is something you have to experience at least once in your life. The guy actually created a last that was exactly the shape of my foot, by gluing strips of leather on an existing last. And then he made an cheap boot on it and called me in for a fitting, then threw the cheap boot away, and then started on the actual boots. Fkn amazing that's all I have to say.

As for our Monster vs Razorback they both great boots but if waterproofing is not a necessity then our Razorback is a very versatile option and does keep water out to some extend depending on how the leather is treated. Viberg work boots are impressive from a structural perspective. They come in whatever color you like as long as it’s black :) They don’t however offer the same character or flash as their Pacific North West equivalents do. Heavy on the function over form so maybe not pretty but the quality of materials and construction are impressive.

Great video Carl, this is pretty much a guide to buying boots and if I'm lucky enough I'll end up having enjoyed wearing most of the boots you mentioned. One boot company that caught my attention was the Junkart boot company. I own a pair of Junkart boots in waxed flesh and I simply love them. The level of craftsmanship for the price is fantastic and their customer service is unmatched by any of their competitors. I own many of the boots you've mentioned and this is one company I'm really glad you mentioned. As for Viberg , I don't see too much value there considering I love my Nick's boots and they're two thirds the price of a Viberg. I'm looking forward to your Wesco review though, especially since you mentioned that they were the best finished boots amongst your PNW boots. Cheers and Kudos for another blockbuster video.

Army surplus is also very good for affordable vintage boots. New surplus stuff is usually more high tech with a PU midsole and a cemented construction, but I've been able to find good deals on ''obsolete' vintage boots like the Steinkogler Feldschuh Schwer which has a triple stitched welt, triple leather midsole. The Swiss mountain boots, and Swedish M59 boots also look quite high quality.

I am a big fan of the thursday boots. I started out with a classic black captain as my first gywed boot and then a few weeks later, I got the Captain's in Arizona Adobes, and most recently I purchased the Logger's in Cacao. The Classics are my go to for more formal occasions and then Arizona Adobes and my Cacao's are my daily shit kickers. I got the Loggers a few weeks ago and I love the boots. It has 11 eyelets which is a bit annoying but the 1/2" vibram fighter outsole, the cuban heel stack, and the thick leather really makes the Loggers the best boot Thursday has to offer. I have been wearing them everyday since I got them for christmas and I still have not borken them in just yet. It is getting more and more broken in and the leather is beautiful. When it wears in you see the nap coming through because the leather is a waxed flesh leahter. It's like having two boots built into one. My next boot will be the Truman Java Waxed Flesh with a cap toe on the 20 last. It will take a few months to save up for but those are my last boot, my grail boot.

I think the majority of QC issues with the Thursday Boots were when the company was starting out. In the last few years they definitely have upped their game. Don't see it mentioned in the below comments, so I will add in. The Red Wing mocs come on two different lasts. The 1907 and 8883 designs you are are the newest design in the roomier 45 last. This allows them to include one of their leather insole inserts. They only come in two versions of their Rough and Tough leather. The other mocs are the "classic" mocs on the older and narrower 23 last. These come with no insert, flat welt and run a more slim profile. Hope that helps!

Hey Carl Murawski, I was wondering if you had any experience with Oak Street Bookmakers? I just ordered the cap toe trench boot because I love the look of this boot. Just wondering,if you own any or recommend this brand? I take your advice very seriously and hope Oak Street boots are as good as they look...thanks again. Huge fan from Wellington, Florida.

The plastic welt on the Golden Fox boots looks sharp and seems pretty tough and flexible, but I do feel it on the outer edges of my toes and the back of my heel at times. A leather/cork insole and new socks makes it a non-issue for the most part. Their leather is surprisingly soft and supple while being plenty thick. Company based on CA, most products made in China, but they have an American made line that uses a full leather welt and midsole for about 200 bucks.

Surprised to not see Oak Street Bootmakers on here. They have a range of offerings. Correct me if I’m wrong anyone, but I believe their boots range from $260-$500. Small batch out of Chicago. I don’t own a pair personally, but they make high quality looking boots!

I like that there are a lot of price options here, but a grounded nature about the whole affair. This may be a strange comparison, but Rick Owens is surprisingly down to earth, too.

Thanks for putting this all together! Would you be willing or have plans to review the Jim Green Monster in the future? You introduced me to the brand and I can’t really find much on that model. I’d love to see how they stack up to the Razorback as I’m looking for a waterproof boot (wish the Razorback was waterproof).

Yeah, if you have the time and patience exploring Indonesian boot makers brand, you can find good boots with really good quality at really cheap price, because a lot of Indonesian boot makers are really a small workshop with only ±10 workers so it can't met the scale of production and marketing like other bibrands. I have a pair from Indonesia and it has thick full grain leather all around (more than 2,5mm) wiith neat stitches, nice finish and goodyear welt for $100 lol

Great video! Can you make a video on boot soles that are really loud? I got a pair that looks good, feels good, the leather is GOOD But they sound like I'm wearing heels as in women's shoes. I don't think they are re-solable and I don't really trust shoemakers around where I live as they don't have the skills, materials and frankly the mood to resole anything. I mean they do but use glue and that's about it. And there's no way of choosing the sole either.. So, what can be done in that instance? Thanks!

Kreosote 7 at 19:58 would appear to be called the “Murawski” ? One in the same? Good-on-ya, but I’m more lower end and can’t agree more with your Jim Green assessments. They are my hiking boot. I like to feel the shape of the rock under foot with more rather than a single point of contact. A great urban boot too.
