Vintage CC! Wonderful control, spot-on tempi, telling registrations and solid musicianship throughout. This is how I want to remember this great American organist who made England his home. A larger-than-life character, who at his finest was an incomparable ambassador for the organ. RIP Carlo.

That Harrison is a masterpiece and so glad it is being restored. Anything by Arthur Harrison is gold. I had the privilege of having this organ’s little brother at Holy Cross Crediton as a practice instrument when I was at uni in Exeter. He was a genius voicer.Carlo adored this organ. He is much missed: he was a lovely lovely humble guy, always up for a long chat with his fans and a phenomenal talent. RIP mate.

Virgil Fox's influence on Curley is clearly evident in this performance. Both were real showmen, as well as great organists.

Thank you for posting this. I have the VHS but haven't been able to convert it. I posted a track from the CD a few years ago. It has so far had almost 350.000 views. So a lot of people will be interested in the full recording.

I heard Carlo play a few times. He certainly did produce a very different sound and frankly I REALLY like his bright rendition of the Wesley Fugue - the Tuba ripple with his left hand was simply stunning.

Thank you John for uploading this enjoyable concert. I have had the pleasure of listening to Carlo Curley, once at Alexander Palace and also at the Royal Albert Hall many, many years ago. Last night I downloaded your recording onto my pendrive and watched it in my home cinema. The picture quality was quite acceptable baring in mind you had to copy it from a VHS tape, which I know from experience is very hit & miss.The sound quality was really quite good played through my TDL Reference Standard speakers with some nice deep notes. Now I must download the 2nd half of the concert. Yes, it is very sad that such a talented and interesting man should die at such an early time in life. Reminds me of another great man, John Ogdon who also died quite young! Thanks Rodney. PS. I wonder whether Decca still have the original tapes!

+Rodney - thanks for your comments. I'm glad my upload worked okay on your system. I knew the audio would be satisfactory, but as with so many old VHS tapes, on can never guarantee visual quality. I'm pleased you enjoyed the concert.

I was at Redcliffe when Carlo gave a recital, I can't remember exactly when it was but it would have been sometime between 1993 and 1997 I think. Being a Bristolian I have attended dozens of organ recitals at Redcliffe and heard this magnificent instrument - which Carlo Curley is quite rightly a huge fan of. Yes, some of his interpretations were a little 'different' particularly the Bach here but he was such a showman and one thing I do remember was that the place was packed to the rafters with people. I always think of him as being the Liberace of the pipe organ. His recitals were entertaining and informative. I am very glad I got to hear him play live and it is a huge shame he is gone so soon. I suppose in some way Cameron Carpenter has picked up where CC left off?

+Paul S Cameron rarely shows a tenth of the musicianship Carlo displayed even on his off days... Carlo preferred the epithet "Pavarotti of the organ".
@Goodchappy

Yes. I don't think I have ever heard Cameron C play a piece as it is written. At least Carlo played the right notes even if he often elaborated on the expression and stop choices, which I like as it adds to the variety. CC is talented but not in the same league and Carlo was. We need more showmen / women like Carlo to help keep organ playing alive.

I think that Virgil Fox was the Liberace of the pipe organ, especially considering that Fox and Liberace lived at the same time and even played together on at least one occasion.

Carpenter is a genius but temperamental and flighty in the modern celebrity way. He actually said he doesn’t like the organ wtf. Carlo adored the organ and its music and was a passionate advocate. He was a genuinely nice guy too happy to play recitals in small venues and very generous with his time. I got chatting to him after a recital when everyone had gone and we must have been talking well over an hour. i bumped into him about 5 years later and he remembered my name and the previous occasion: lovely guy.

Great Concert, wonderful virtuosity (shame about the pretty ropy choir at the end) - it's really sad Curley has died! - bloody odd looking audience though - where the hell did they get them from? are they extras from a cheap horror film? Oh, I just remembered, this is Bristol - all is explained!

Carlo on tremendous form here, even if his rubato tends to the excruciating at times. What is the soft piece just before that ropy "I Was Glad"? The Redcliffe choir has certainly improved since then, and thankfully the Harrison remains intact, magnificently restored. As on the CD, the performance of the Elgar Imperial March here is simply flawless, Carlo and the Harrison both in their element: I can only imagine Sir Edward looking down with a wistful smile.

I believe Fox's influence was there, but Carlo was more of an "English" exponent. He did study with George Thalben-Ball.

English organs can play French Romantic music fairly convincingly... the reverse is not the case. That isn't to say Cavaillé-Colls and the like aren't masterpieces, but Father Willis, Arthur Harrison and so on were right up there with them...

Impossible to say which organs are best in the world. I have favourites from different schools but a Harrison and Harrison is very different from a Cavaille Coll or a Silbermann or a Skinner.
@richardharrold9736
@richardharrold9736 6 жыл бұрын
Yep. Arthur Harrison and Skinner are quite close, there are some noticeable tonal commonalities between them, but then Skinner had his own ideas, and used Pitman chests for everything, whereas Harrison insisted on using slider chests for everything other than bass offsets and the odd unit chest (mostly on the Pedal, though Newcastle City Hall has an extended 16-8-4 Orchestral Trumpet on 20" w.p. on the Solo manual - alas, that spectacular and unaltered instrument is now largely unplayable).
