Eddie Hazel .. Who plays the guitar solo on Maggot Brain? guitarist Eddie Hazel The conversation that led the shy, sensitive guitarist Eddie Hazel to play the epic 10-minute soul cry of a solo on “Maggot Brain” is one of the most repeated stories in Funkadelic lore. The album begins with an eery monologue and 10-minute guitar solo where Clinton supposedly told guitarist Eddie Hazel to “imagine he had been told his mother had died but then learned that it wasn't true.” This surreal, palpable type of emotional expression weaves through the entire album, including the album's cover, ...

Would love to hear Carlos’ solo when he joined The Rolling Stones in Chicago for “Sympathy for the Devil” in 1975. He played a Fender amp modified by Elliot Randall. Ronnie Wood and Keith Richards were impressed with the tone (as well as his playing) that Santana got, Keef and Woody acquired Boogie amps (that were based on the Fender amp modified by Randall) and played for many years. I’ve played a “Lonestar” by Randall’s Mesa Engineering on and off for about 18 years now.

As awesome as Haynes and Santana can make this sound, and others alike, I can't think of many people who have actually made this their own version quite like Derek in this video. Most of the time it just feels very similar to the original, and that slide version is just mind blowingly soulful in comparison. I swear to god, he could play one note and make it sound like Aretha Franklin screaming her lungs out.

One of the greatest live guitar performances of all time was Hendrix playing Machine Gun on New Years Eve 1969/70 at the Fillmore East and he stood stock still throughout yet had just as much presence as when he did his stage show. The Derek you see onstage is the same person he is offstage just a really talented down to earth guy. Roy Buchanan was the same way, his guitar was blazing yet the only thing that moved on him was his jaw. It looked like he was grinding the hell out of his teeth. Hendrix was a rare combination that unfortunately spawned so many who really couldn't reach the bar he set and have really cheapened his memory. I'd rather people be true to themselves like Derrick rather than try to be something they're not and fail.
