If you notice he has next to no pace whatsoever but he lets the ball and the attackers do the running. It's a good demonstration that being a great footballer is not all about pace. Legend.

I remember watching World Cup94 and 98 when i was a boy back then. Valderrama was just fascinating - a genius -, loved to watch this guy playing. Nowadays... guess where my wife come from..!!?? yes she is from Colombia :)) vamos pibe, todo bien todo bien 👍👍😁 saludos de austria

Algo que admiro mucho del Pibe Valderrama, es que a diferencia de Neymar, de Maradona y de otros, soportaba empujones, jalones, patadas, codazos, y nunca se tiraba al piso buscando la falta. Lo vi guerrear unos balones imposibles, entre tres rivales que a la fuerza lo querían tumbar, y el guapeaba, y luchaba el balón.

Estuve en el Monumental el dia del 0 5. Lo sufri como nunca pero siempre lo admire. Un grande de verdad. No corria pero eso no hacia falta. La pelota si corria y el eso lo hacia mejor que nadie.

When I see James Rodriguez play today, I see so many elements of Carlos‘ style in his game. The ball control, the crazy eye for his teammates on the pitch. But Valderrama is the best...

I remember seeing him on TV when I was a kid but.. I never realized how good he was. Great range of passes.. and his dribbling is like a form of dancing. So clever. I’m amazed at how kept the ball under close control, even when crowded by shirt pulling defenders. He really held his ground, and waited for his teammates. Not fast, just well-positioned.

One of the best passers I've ever seen. A forward's dream. All you had to do was find some space, and Valdi would serve you the perfect ball. Colombia should have gotten to semifinals in '94 World Cup. Too bad the team and the country had a bad mentality at that time.

I’ve great fortune to watch him play live. The ball is stuck to his feet! It’s very very difficult to take the ball away from him. Such a great short passer of the ball. Pure central midfielder. He doesn’t have pace, but his ball control, shielding and passing is out of this world. Thank you sir.

Zach Gray you could argue that Valdi is one of the leading exponents of the last real generation of the traditional individualistic South American style, less the "anti-futebol" of the Rioplatense teams from the 60s on and more the "great teams made by combining great individuals" style that historically differentiated the Latin American teams from the more direct European styles (both the stifling catenaccio prevalent in Italy, the kick-and-rush of northern Europe, and the hybrid styles of Spain and the Netherlands) where individualism is often subjugated to pragmatism. Cristiano has grown up playing European football, albeit the more space-and-time Iberian style, and then honed his craft in the more physical English game before moving to Spain where he's grown even more; Messi started off in Rioplatense football and then has spent his whole career in Europe; both are insanely gifted players but who have grown in a generation of football where professionalism is at an all time high; as a result they have grown to be better players than their precursors, but the modern game often lacks some of the joie de vivre of the old jogo bonito of Brazil and those mercurial Colombians and Mexicans of the time. Jorge Campos or Carlos Valderrama may not be more skilled than many of today's players but the carefree (to the point of recklessness) way they went about expressing themselves on the field made them more compelling to watch, less predictable.

Para mi el Pibe es él mejor jugador del mundo, él Pibe estan crack que en una oportunidad jugo Colombia vs Inglaterra y David Beckan lo busco para que le cambiara la camiseta y alli se noto el gran jugador que era y contaba con reconocimiento, respeto y admiracion de grandes jugadores como Beckan, Gulli y muchos mas, cuando fue el mundial de Brazil 2014 Didier Drogba que para ese tiempo uno de los mejores jugadores del mundo dijo en una entrevista "no hicimos nada en el mundial pero por lo menos conoci a mi idolo él Pibe" esas palabras me llenaron de emocion y orgullo, escuchar decir eso a uno de los mejores delanteros del mundo en ese tiempo fue maravilloso 😁

Not really, money's always been part of the game, players going for wages, sponsers, ads etc. It's only now we see the rotting nature of it as it's symptoms are out in the open, getting worse because we let it stay.

when i was a kid ,colombia was my favourite team, .. in the 9 0' s was the best : higuita,valderrama,rincon,higuaran,asprilla...that team won 5 0 vs argentina ,in argentina

What killed them in 90 was Valderrama though. He would use too many touches as seemed incapable of moving quickly. So the teams playing against them all got back into defensive positions while Carlos was busy doing tricks on the midfield, and then when he finally got rid of the ball they faced a fully balanced defense. It's just bad football, no matter how impressive it looks in youtube videos.

Also in 1994 WC they were considered as favorites to win the cup,but unfortunately were eliminated in group stages. Boy the defeat of Argentina in Bunos Aires was monumental for many reasons.

Cuantos jugadores en el mundo son capaces de colocar tantos balones de gol a los delanteros? eso es una cualidad única que solo la tenia Valderrama, visión periférica, precisión en los pases con ambas piernas, lectura de juego, rapidez en la ejecución y una increíble personalidad netamente ganadora. Cuentan la leyenda que en los momentos mas difíciles el era quien comandaba, muchos ante la dificulta se asustan y no quieren tomar el balón pero este señor era todo lo contrario, en esos momentos era cuando mas la solicitaba. #GrandeValderrama ídolo del mundo entero.

Soy mexicano pero recuerdo al pibe en los noventa cuando yo tenía apenas 15 años sin la facilidad de las redes como hoy era un ídolo un gran jugador y todo el mundo hablaba de el mi esposa es de México también no le gusta casi el fútbol como a mi Pero si hay un jugador al que siempre le llamo la atención fue el pibe le encantaba su pelo y tenía mucho Ángel que se ganaba el corazón hasta de la gente que no seguía el fútbol hasta la fecha mi esposa anhela una foto con el pibe ojala le pueda cumplir algún día su sueño y lo pueda conocer grande pibe se te extraña en la cancha
