In part two we improve the sound of this beast of an amp. We correct the problems we had at the end of part one. We also fit a brand new set of tubes.
The tubes tubes were ordered from Watford Valves. We bias the amp with the scope. I have put the link to Watford Valves below.

Inspired analytics and tweaks to the original design have made the old Carlsbro a top notch amp.. Brilliant work Martyn.

I watched a 1980s Hiwatt rebuild the other day and the same with this amp is the amount of filtering that is used. Reinstalling new filter caps would be a major investment. Great job rebuilding this amp!

Hello, thank you. The same week I put this video out I bought a 50 watt version. I hadn't seen one of these for years. Then two pop up in a week. Take care.

Great rebuild there. I’m sure that amp has a long troubled free service after your work. I really enjoyed this one.

Dregs......the name of one of my favorite bands (originally the Dixie Dregs). I've seen the original Dregs, the Steve Morse band, and the Dregs reunion shows, many times. "Yet all hope pleasure in what yet remain, and from the Dregs of life, think to receive, what the first sprightly running could not give". Excerpted from the poem "Life is a cheat" by John Dryden, 1641.

Hello. His real name is Shaft but when he sits guarding the gate he is The Henchman Dregs. I my must read the John Dryden poem. Take care.

I have an amp head with four 6L6GC tubes space fairly close together, and I installed a 3.5 inch computer fan to keep things cool. I plug the power supply (small transformer) into the convenience outlet on the back of the amp. It's a 12V fan and the power supply I'm using is 8V so the fan isn't running at full speed, but it's fast enough to cool things down, but not noisy.

Hello Michael. Sounds like a good plan. This amp didn't seem to get too hot, but it's always better to have a bit more space between them. Take care.

I own a snubby-nosed Unibit (a "Christmas tree" drill as you put it) that goes up to 1.25 or maybe 1.5 inches, and it's less than 2 inches long, so you certainly could use one like that to enlarge the hole for the IEC power connector. I have owned this Unibit (that's the brand name) since the 1980s! The only thing I don't like about it is that it only has one cutting edge, whereas the more modern Klein, Milwaukee and most other brands of modern stepped drillbits have 2 cutting edges, making them faster and more efficient and leaving a cleaner cut with less burring. Anyway, if you can't find a Christmas tree bit that is short enough to drill out a hole like that without hitting the capacitors, then perhaps you should grind the end of the drill off to make it shorter.....

Wow, sounds killer now either channel and jumpered and if that's rusty playing I'd be over the moon to have half that ability. Don't need pedals or clever FX units, just plug in and play.

Hello Rob, thank you. Yes it does sound good. While I was repairing this one a 50 watt version came up for sale. It was cheap so I bought it. It needs work though and new output tubes. Should be up on the channel soon. Take care Rob.

Sounds pretty good considering that it now has metal-film resistors everywhere 😉. (Some folks might have a hissy-fit about that). It is a touch bright, could be overkill with a Telecaster.... but the second channel is more midrangy and would likely be a better Tele match.
