It is normal for advanced players to give piece odds to beginners. Magnus showing the "mere" grandmasters who the boss is by giving them tempi and awful pawn formations. In sports lingo: MAGNUS IS THE ULTIMATE TRASH TALKER, taking Fischer's quote of crushing his opponent's ego.

Magnus is just refusing to play into their prep. He picked the worst responses because he knew the opponent wouldn't focus their prep around it. Stockfish can't understand these kinds of tactics. The evaluation bar is only accurate for engine vs engine play, not human vs human play. People need to stop being so shocked about Magnus's moves, saying he's "trolling" or "disrespecting" his opponents. Chess doesn't need to be played like an engine vs engine game when you're a human vs another human. He's using valid tactics.

Another great game analyzed with fantastic commentary! Get this...I've actually improved my chess just from watching all these Carlsen games with your voiceovers! I don't even both trying to memorize openings anymore, because my middlegame and endgame have improved so much! It's all due to the revelation of Magnus shunning traditional lines in favor of playing the clock, i.e., getting out of book as soon as possible, because he thinks too fast for his opponents. Then pile on your insightful commentary to that revelation, and I've gone up about 150 points! (to ~1450-1500, haha). Thanks, Epic Chess!

I’ve recently picked chess back up. I did so because I was watching a video of Magnus dissecting one of his games. He wasn’t talking about theory or memorized lines, he described pieces holding territory, threatening areas, attacking and defending. He talked about it more like soccer or football. It was a simple thing (and something others have done before). Something just kinda clicked in how I saw the board. I think that’s why he likes 960 and troll openings. It forces everyone to play the pieces, not the memorized lines.

A couple of years ago I saw this opening variation online and thought "I should be able to beat this rubbish." After a day of analysis I realized that with best play black ended up with a position that was objectively -1 but very hard to crack. So I stuck a good chess engine as white and a slightly better one as black. The black engine kept improving its position and won several times over. I concluded that with best play as black he could wear white down mentally. I have used this concept in a critical game to win a high level speed chess tournament.

Maybe it is not like “how does Carlsen do it”, but more like “how does his opponent let him get away with it”. To put it harshly: his opponent doesn’t understand chess at all, he probably put a lot of effort to learn openings, but is helpless when a player like Carlsen doesn’t oblige playing them.

@@fahmifarizi7242 I kind of have to repeat myself: if a grandmaster isn’t able to punish such an opening play by Carlsen, he misses something essential: he may be playing quite OK against you and me, but he lacks some fundamental understanding of the weaknesses of trash openings; no matter who his opponent is, he should be able to do much better than this grandmaster did. I remember reading a comment about a match between Keres and Unzicker, stating that there is a difference between grand masters and grandmasters, the game shown here exemplifies this difference.

Only thing you gamble is your reputation if you can’t get any right and people think ‘this guy is rubbish at the game’.
