Regarded as the GOAT of chess, Magnus Carlsen has incorporated a new, peculiar, and unconventional chess opening known as the Goat Horns opening into his repertoire. Remarkably, he holds an impressive win rate of 82% with this unusual opening, having even secured victories against formidable opponents such as Hikaru Nakamura and Fabiano Caruana.
Curious about how this opening unfolds? Carlsen begins with 1...a6 on move 1 - yes, you heard it right! But the intrigue doesn't stop there; he follows up with 2...c6, yet another seemingly bizarre move.
While it may appear to be a whimsical opening, suitable for trolling opponents on the Internet, it actually has some interesting variations that allow Black to attain a superior position.

I think a6 is very reasonable when paired with the Caro-Kann, I never played a5 anyway, in the karlsbad structure we always play a6/a3. Rather than playing the botvinnik Carls against the advanced CK, I think a6 is a much better option.

In the line 1. d4 a6 2. e4 c6 3. Nf3 d5 4. e5 Bg4 5. Be2 e6 6. O-O c5 black is underdeveloped. Therefore white should open the position immediately with 7. c2c4. In my opinion 7. c2c4 is the critical line to test the Delayed Caro-Kahn Goat Variation.

QG8 looks like the best, it wins the night on E5, if QF7, then white can move the night, to defend the queen, and if QxQ, then NxQ, if PxN, then black drops his queen.

When black plays bishop to g4 i rarely see the counter white pawn to G3 (which would be my immediate reaction, chasing the bishop away). Can someone tell me why this is not a good counter to bishop to g4??
@fnutarf2085
@fnutarf2085 12 күн бұрын
My guess is that it would be creating weaknesses around the kingside to chase the bishop away, which makes it more dangerous to castle that way. Besides the bishop can just move backwards to h5 and still keep pressuring in the same way. -edit: the computer tells me that's fine for white though so I don't now. Might be scary for a human to commit, especially if they intend to castle kingside

Gotta be careful, in that line Ng6/Nd3 offers a queen trade, and you can't capture the knight with your pawns because your queen on c7 is undefended. Qb8 instead puts your queen on a square where it is defended, countering the trick.

@@lettuceman5195 carful the queen is loose there. White can move the knight to an attacked square that defends the queen. And you don’t have time to take the knight cuz you drop your queen. You need to pin the knight from a defended square.
