Best recording of this extremely challenging piece I ever heard, even when you compare to the big, Mattei and so on. Mr. Garland has a couple of balls and he's not afraid to sing with them

Just great! Who is the soloist? It's a killer piece...after about 9 top G's, the poor baritone has to hit a top A, fortissimo staccato. Thomas Allen & even the great Fischer-Dieskau fudge it, but this guy nails it perfectly. Bravissimo.

Also, fun to note that right as he sings "Voluptatis avidus," it looks like he's giving an example thereof. I'm pretty sure it was just emphatic tension, but yeah. I'll not elaborate further on what I mean. One who understands Latin would likely know what I mean.

"Voluptatis avidus" is quite mild by Orffian standards - take a look at the pornographic Prealusio he wrote for the 1943 Catulli Carmina ;-) As to diction, I heard a performance in which the baritone mixed up the words constantly in this number and didn't even sing words for most of the third strophe of "Omnia sol temperat."

You can hear him straining on the top G's and the final top A though. A real tenor wouldn't. He's almost a tenor in terms of how high he goes, but not in terms of intonation on these notes. Carmina Burana call for a high baritone with a range basically that of a choir tenor, except descending to bass A if I recall correctly, and that strain in the high notes is exactly what Orff was looking for.

Actually, Carl wrote up to a *B* in "Dies, nox, et omnia" (although that can be falsetto). He was all about making people sing too high (see Kreon in Antigonae as well).

I've sung this role a few times, and I can say, without a doubt, he's a baritone. He's no Leonard Warren, but then neither is Thomas Hampson...someone that I'd say is similar to this gentleman's voice, in depth and power. GOOD voice, GOOD interpretation...and dang...I miss singing this thing!!!

Time to get a better understanding of vocal fach, timbre, and tessitura. He's a lyric baritone. There is nothing tenorial about his voice whatsoever.
