I have a chair same brand and very similar to this one in your video. My chair is out of adjustment somehow. The arm has to be all the way forward, rather than straight up pointing toward the ceiling, in order to keep the back from reclining. Not sure how it got out of adjustment, as it used to be correct. I have looked at the shaft that runs from the arm to underneath the chair, but I just cant figure out how to adjust it so the arm will be at the proper, straight up, position for cutting hair. I cant have the back falling backwards while cutting hair. It is odd that the arm has to be all the way forward to lock the back. Any ideas?

Unfortunately, could be almost anything. We’ve pretty much winding down retiring. Without have it in front of us. We really don’t know what to tell you. Thanks for watching and good luck.

@@MantiquesNetworkShowWell thanks anyway! I understand, I figured without looking at it that it would be pretty hard to diagnose. We just use it as it is. Fortunately it is still usable this way. I understand about retiring. After Covid happened, I personally retired also. I rather like retirement now. But I still have a business, and we use the chair. Best wishes with your retirement!

Just a quick note on these old barber chairs. Myom is Julia O'Grady I just want to add that on these old barber chairs you never want to tilt them sideways once the hydraulic fluid is in. Here's why: on these older chairs there is an actual seal that holds and allows the pump arm to lift and lower. If the chairs are tipped sideways you take a huge risk in the seal being sideways the hydraulic fluid can cause the seal to flaw and actually leak the fluid out..

This is in fact true. I tipped an old chair sideways tonight and sure enough the fluid leaked out.

Isn’t the chair ceramic? Can you paint over ceramic? My chair has a few chips and I was trying to figure out how to get the ceramic fixed.

It's porcelain. If the porcelain is in poor shape we choose to put several coats of high-end car paint. Looks as good as the porcelain. Good luck and thanks for following us. Jeff

I have an August Kern chair (late 1890s).. I did some mild restoration on it , but now I’m looking to sell it.. where do you recommend? Like what store or what type of store.. I’ll m in Dallas, Tx. Any help or tips would be really appreciated! Thanks!

Hello, I am an artist and I just purchased my first chair to restore myself. Is there any video that breaks down the step by step for disassembly of the entire hydraulic and base? I've got it down to the hydraulic and base and not sure where to go from there any help would be great. Thanks - Matt

There really wasn't much of a restoration in the video. Mostly an advertisement Mantiques. Especially, since there's a phone number and DM to buy the chair.

Where do i add the hydraulic fluid? When i take the seat off the chair i see the hydraulic pump.

G'day mate. It's Greg from Melbourne, Australia. I recently got two Malwa barber chairs, 1920's and made in the USA. These chairs are very similar to the one in your video. I'm doing a full restoration but I need to know how much hydraulic oil do I put in. Thanks mate

Great Video....what kind of paint should I use to paint the base of my barber chair. The original base color paint is white, but its fading, peeling, and exposing the metal. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks

Hi, If the chair is made with porcelain and its in good shape we prefer to leave it. If it's needs painting we strip it, prime it and spray it with car paint. Thanks Jeff

It probably needs work on the seals and it's gears. Nothing we could tell you over the line. You would need to have it restored. Thanks Jeff

How much is enough oil in the chair?

Keep adding 'Hydraulic" not motor oil until it starts to go up and down. If its making a gurgling sound it does not have enough.
