The carnix is an Iron Age Celtic wind instrument used between 300 BC and 200 AD. It was a kind of bronze pipe, vertically directed, with a bell in the form of an animal's head, for example a boar. It was used during battles, probably to give a signal to attack soldiers and intimidate the enemy.

I remember hearing that this was used an inspiration for the chilling horn sounds made by the machines in the 2005 war of the worlds movie. I can see why.

They were used between about 300 BC through 300 AD. That is well before the Middle Ages. 🙂 But it would definitely be an experience to hear that in a forest in any era!

@@m.e.3614 I am pretty sure they were in use well into the early Middle Ages, definitely until the fall of the empire. At least they are depicted up to the fall.

@@badgersno The dates I gave were estimates, rough numbers, so sure there could have been some who continued for some time to use them or others who remembered them and depicted them in imagery after those exact dates. The dating of the fall of Rome (and then the beginnings of the early Middle Ages) seems to be such a loose, debatable point even for historians, but is usually the 5th century that we can classify as beginning of the early Middle Ages, although I have seen some put it even earlier. But there is too much of a heavy Roman influence to place the early Middle Ages much earlier IMO. Anyways, I can nerd out on this stuff a lot as I find it interesting to toss ideas around. Would love to see where you saw them later if you have any references you can recall?

Это не карнай который таджики досехпор играют на свадьбах и наврузах и это не совсем музыкальный инструмент.это такой инструмент который тысячи лет тому назад играли перед битвой с врагами и заодно их пугали громкий звоном . Даже ест рубаи у таджикского поэта Хаяма . Ин накд бигиру даст аз он нася бидор Овози духул шунидан Аз Дур хуш АСТ. Пускай переводят потомки Хаяма и Рудаки очём этот рубаи или стихи.
