I planted two 30-gallon Midnights last year. Beautiful leaves. Nurseries Carolininana closed its doors last year. I was blessed to be able to get lots of plants from them over the years. I'll miss them.

My lorapetalum flourishes. Unfortunately a prior owner of the house, planted 3 close together in front of the front windows. They are a variety that aspires to reach 20 feet. People often have trouble believing a cute little plant will ever grow so big, and “landscapers” tell homeowners they can keep it clipped as a hedge. They can’t.

I made that mistake. MIne are beautiful but are now reaching the eves of the house as I wasn't able to trim them back last year

Thank you Alexandra for showing us around your garden. Ozzy’s adorable, good to see a dog eats his greens.😆 However, I haven’t seen your other dog for a long while, the Saluki looking one. Sorry I don’t know his/ her name.

I love my Cherice Charm lorepetulum. I probably have spelled something wrong. It looks just like yours here! I would like more.

2:57. I got Garnet Fire from Ted about three years ago with the idea of letting it grow into a small tree. It has not disappointed, vastly superior to older red varieties. I’m so glad you mentioned limbing these up to tree shape. There are magnificent old specimens in the squares of Savannah and I was going to ask if you would ever do a video highlighting use of Loropetalum as small trees. So many people see them trimmed into small shrubs and don’t know what lovely trees they make. I absolutely love mine, they have something to offer all year with barely any maintenance. Thanks for the video!

I have an after thought question, your garden is classic and beautiful as it is but I noticed you don’t have a water feature. Would that be tricky to maintain? I’m contemplating if I should install a water feature, albeit a low maintenance one like a rill. Love to hear your pros & cons and appreciate if you have any suggestions. Many thanks.

My mother’s lorapetalums are doing famously this year. She wonders if it has to do with when she pruned them back in the autumn.

Thanks, Jim! In ideal conditions, about when does the fast growth begin? Maybe by its second or third season in the ground?

Jim, is this variety any more cold hard than the older varieties? I have several nearly 20’ tall ones that were destroyed by our 0 degree weather this winter. Not a leaf left and no sign of new growth. They are green when I scratch the bark on the larger limbs and trunks. I am hoping they can recover.

Do you see any wildlife activity on it, like pollinators or birds using it for shelter or to nest?

I live in NY zone 6b/7 - Do you think it’s possible for me to have a dwarf loropetalum ? I would plant it out of the wind & wrap it in the winter.

Is it ok if I plant it in full sun. I live at 1000 meters above sea level, and the Sun is pretty strong here.

Before how many years did you plant this shrub? How many years did it took to grow this big? That really looks beautiful. I am planning to get one for my frontyard.

@@scpatl4now.. wow.. I planted one carolina midnight last year in spring 2023. And I live in Sacramento, CA. But I haven't seen significant growth in past year. What could be the reason? What should I do to make it flourish?

He is not lying when he says this could be a tree. I have one in the back that is 20 feet tall and I keep all the suckers cut back and it is a tree. Don't be fooled though. These plants are not low maintenance . They constantly need to be pruned because they grow so fast and will rob sunlight of anything growing in their shadow. If you are really industrious, you can train these plants into shapes like a topiary. I did that on my plant that's a tree in the back , but you are constantly having to prune.
