I'm 28 but few years ago had the exact same situation with someone! I was a kitchen installer he was the head installer and no one ever work with him. He was over the top picky with you work but you don't see him do it towards his and he had major trust issues with people instantly because of the past. Which I can understand but come on man u cant label someone the same when they are not the same person. I tried so hard to get along with all the reasons people hated to work with him because I new a lot already but new I could learn from him as well I just got to get on his good side. Well my attempts didn't work at first till I blew up on him myself for him being nit picky but I had evidence of 10x worse on his end. He also went into silence and said no ones ever said that to me like that and we started to get along, was just a few weeks later he was making sure I was with him 24/7 going into all the homes and showing me a few little different tricks I didn't know which was helpful! I know have been working for myself for the past year but want my journeyman!

I started a job with no experience in carpentry I did do a few projects in school took construction 1 and 2 in highschool but the owner/boss told me oh don’t you worry we will teach you everything you need to know the guys I worked with had zero patience didn’t want to teach me I didn’t have any guidance they just called me names and told me this kinda stuff wasn’t for me even tho all I wanted was to do a good job and learn as much as possible I think their anger comes from alcohol or drugs they all did something after work drank or something I ended up leaving that job I’m planning on going to school for a year for this carpenters assistant program to learn more I’d like to build my own house some day and these angry guys are making it hard

Don't let your first run--in discourage you, There are a lot of 'know-it-all' out there that are total losers, and they razz the newby's cause they don't know Jack. Learn all you can up front, and keep learning, find the right crew, even if it takes a couple of tries, and stick with it. I've trained a lot of guys that never did this work before, and even some seasoned carpenters that never did the specialized work we do, and I can tell up front if they can handle the work or not, the guys who come in with an attitude, don't last long.

Funny story. My lead carpenter is basically your version of goat and he’s the boss on site when the owner isn’t there. I’m in a conundrum because I’m not trying to “be the boss” but he also walks all over myself and the other carpenters and lacks any communication skills for the goals in mind. I want to tell tell him to stop chewing my ass out but not act like I’m trying to be the boss. Even better is when I try to get ahead of the curve for him, he gets upset when I take initiative to help out with other stuff on site or even help him with stuff. Tough situation overall. Not trying to usurp the boss but I’m tired of getting walked over.

Hey dude, I am 34 worked my way to an office job which I hate. Miss working with my hands. I love tools, I love seeing daily progress. Am I too old to jump into this profession?

Thanks Jared, no you're not to old. Just had lunch with a guy who is 32 and getting started as a carpenter. Play it smart, You need to be strategic, how much money do you need to keep the light on, etc. Another option, do side jobs or handyman jobs, night and weekend jobs until other doors open cause I don't think you ever to old. I hope this helps. Thanks for watching my friend!

Been there, done that buddy. I was a white collar worker for years and was slowly losing my mind (literally, I had a full on breakdown on the job.) I started when I turned 42, I worked for Excavating/Concrete company for 14 years, I was sick of finishing concrete & running heavy equipment, was super nervous about making the jump because the start pay was no where near what I was making, however I’m glad I did, to compensate the loss income I did side jobs every weekend, but I just show up early & keep a fantastic attitude, I was lucky and got on a crew with veterans who were cool, they talked so much shit but man I’ve learned so much, honestly the job is hard as you make it, I’m outside daily, in the sunshine, talk shit all day, making some bucks!! LFG

I’ve got zero experience in wood working or anything to do with being a carpenter. I’m in my early 20s. Would you say someone with zero experience in labor can become a good carpenter? Just want a job that would allow me to provide for me little family. I should add I’m also pretty poor with math, so the measuring kind of worries me. Thanks
