I bet there were people in the audience that probably didn’t appreciate what they were seeing, many they were into other genres organ jazz, but they still gave it up for them . However they felt , they were witnessing a preview of the Carpenters, and they probably never forgot that moment, especially after the first time they were all hearing The Carpenters first hits on the radio .

They won the Battle Of The Bands in the Hollywood Bowl 1966 and (Your All-American College Show) in 68. It was a TV show that picked a winning band every week. Then brought the winners back to pick a final winner, They won it too.

Hi Mr. President, I see you are back as I came looking for you earlier and you were gone by longer than I had thought. I see I have to catch up. I will do so in a moment but first, isn’t this early video amazing. It was, as said before they were officially Carpenters. That happened in 1969 with their signing to A&M Records. I went to the Carpenters 55th Anniversary Celebration in Downey, CA this past April. It was a 4 day love of Carpenters fest. There was an Acoustic Concert on the second night and on the last night there was a surprise guest. Richard showed up and sat for an interview with his coauthor, Chris May. Can you imagine all the heads in the audience exploding when he walked out from behind a skyrim with Chris. Amazing. Back to that concert. There were 8 invited artists from around the world invited to perform that night. I want to talk about one of them. Her name is Tori Holub and she’s 20. She’s been getting some recognition, she was one of 8 invited and at 20, the youngest. She has a wide array of talents but she’s kinda known for one thing in particular. I’ve given you a nice intro but would love to see you join the list of reactors who have taken my advice to have a listen. I was introduced to her in October by KZfaq and I’ve been requesting her since. I have a friend who has joined me as he’s impressed, too. There have been a couple others that I don’t know. She was the youngest singer invited to the 55th and privately met with Richard. I hope I have your attention. The song I’m linking is her collaboration with James Wilkas. He assembled a world wide group of musicians to create the song but his lead vocalist suddenly passed away. The song sat unfinished until KZfaq introduced Tori to him. The rest may just be history. Produced by James Wilkas feat. Tori Holub (Ha Lubb) on lead and backing vocals. The song is; We’ve Only Just Begun (Cover) Joe kzfaq.info/get/bejne/gJ9ln8l71tWdho0.htmlsi=u7Z9JU--QUhr2qGl .

Adding my perspective to this particular comment Patrick because I wholeheartedly agree with the above request to react to the Tori Holub/Jim Wilkas cover of We've Only Just Begun. IMO, your wonderful catalog of reactions stands out compared to many other reactors because of its rich attention to many older artists and classic rhythm and blues. I remember your past reactions to the Carpenters, appreciating the attention and credit you gave to their contribution, and given your familiarity with their music, I sincerely believe you would not be disappointed with this request. It is both an outstanding tribute and a totally enchanting rendition in its own right. And thanks for reaching into the vault and grabbing one of Karen and Richard's earliest appearances. Wonderful to see it highlighted. Thanks again.

Starting around 1965 (I was still In the Navy) I used to see Carpenters in jazz clubs around Los Angeles as "The Dick Carpenter Jazz Trio". Karen was late 15 or early 16 at the time but a true unicorn on the drums. You did not see female Jazz drummers or any jazz drummers as young as she. In 1966 they won the Hollywood Bowl Battle of the Bands Playing "Iced Tea" (Richard wrote) and "The Girl from Ipanema". Richard played the keyboard and did the arrangements and wrote part of their music Karen on the drums (she did not sing yet) and Wesley Jacobs, became the tubist of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, played a very hot tuba. You can hear "Iced Tea" at kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hr-GYMyLtNutd5c.html&ab_channel=RichardCarpenter Later (I believe 67) they were in a collage band called "Spectrum" Saw them at The Whisky-A -Go-Go but it soon ended also and Karen and Richard went back to Richard Carpenter Jazz Trio only with Bill Sissoyev on bass. They won the (Your All-American College Show) The vid you put on. Then they signed wit A&M and made the most beautiful music that can reach your ears for the next 14 years.

Thank you for your reaction. In 1968 Richard (Dick) called the group, “Dick Carpenter Trio”. They were not called the “Carpenters” as a group until 1969. Karen’s voice was still on its way up. Her drums were excellent! Karen was 18 and Richard 21 at that time. I believe the other guy’s name was Wes Jacobs. Also, I hope you would react to their song, “A Place To Hideaway” Peace 🎉

Wesley Jacobs was in the first “Dick Carpenter jazz Trio” (before "Spectrum"). He played a Tuba. He went from the trio to Juilliard and then to Detroit Symphony Orchestra. This guy Bill Sissoyev was in the second “Dick Carpenter jazz Trio” (after "Spectrum"). He played the base. He was in a Psychedelic rock group from Los Angeles, California, USA, on1969, released one album on Lee Hazlewood's label LHI Records. Then sort of disappeared.

Karen died way way too young… heart failure due to extreme dieting leading to anorexia all because a reporter described her as chubby and then she also had a very narcissistic mother who was incapable of showing any love. Such a sad life for a truly gifted singer and drummer
