One thing that stuck out for me was at 2:17 the thread has a crack (don't like that at all) It could very easily chip off and get sucked into the motor... One thing I did like about red was the inlet holes are much larger. Blue is better in every way. I like the thicker can also...for a working truck or even passenger cars road debris is a major concern

it has an inferior tube, as does the chinese, the USA has the best tube, if I have to say why then um no point... the density of the filter paper isn't what makes a filter a good filter, they clogg quicker, do not flow as well, and may deteriorate quicker? the real test is what the medium, actually is????? filters have a tolerance, certain sizes do not need to be trapped, of course all metal you want trapped, why you want a magnet in your oil filter or why you should put a magnet about 3/4 to 1" wide the entire circumference of your filter, you want to grab any metal particles before they are filtered . . . again media type is more important than density, petroleum products can deteriorate many filtrate materials, some swell when wet, some do not, so its not how dense it appears under a microscope...

there are so many people who over tighten oil filters, I guess they don't trust the seals. The other thing is that as the filter gets heated and cooled it seems to tighten itself over time. For both of those reasons it's better to have a thicker metal outer can come time to remove it. Thinner cans often collapse during removal requiring you to stab it with a screwdriver to get it off making the job much messier. Hand tightening is all that's required for filter installation.

This is a very common upgrade for Ford engines with the 2.0, 2.3, and I believe the Mazda 2.5L Duratec. The manual calls for the shorter (Motorcraft) FL-910 filter, but the slightly longer FL-400 filter will fit just fine. Motorcraft has the antidrainback valve at the base, opposed to the top. Shorter dry starts. The bigger filters are just holding more "dirt", if you replace the OE one at the 500 miles, there should be no issue with the dirt capacity. All in all, not really an "upgrade".

If you want to save money, go with the EQUIVALENT non-factory branded filter. Good example: no need to use "Motorcraft filters OR Motocrft oil in your Ford product. Btw, Ford DOES NOT manufacture their OWN oil, don't know about the filters. Also, if you are told to use "Ford" spark plugs because non-Ford plugs will cause mis-fires and DAMAGE the coils not true. I recently replaced my ORIGINAL plugs in a '13 Focus with NGK not Motorcraft plugs. Upon removal of the stock plugs, I noticed that the plug number "stamped" into the plug EXACTLY matched the number on the NGK plug, but the NGK plug was cheaper. Don't get misled with this "use only OEM" BS!

Ive used synthetic oil and filters for years, mostly mobil 1. However, after some project farm oil reviews, I've started leaning a bit more penzoil synthetic. Both are great oils. As for filters, Iv.started to do a bit more research. I definitely want to stay with a premium filter since I change my oil about every 7000 miles. Due to the increasing prices in Mobil 1 filters, been trying a few other options. I've tried super tech (Walmart) blue. Last time I tried this Carquest blue after seeing a review. The price is right. At Advanced, I couldn't find it on the shelf. However, they had some in back. Probably because of the lower cost and lower profit margin. Stay away from fram unless you do their top premium

By chemical standards, Mobile 1 is NOT synthetic. They won the right to claim in via lawsuit. My guess is the penzoil is superior but that is only a guess. Higher end oils are often much better than M1. For budget but still a great product it is hard to be Rotella T6 full syn.

Preface by saying, if Steve is still under vehicle/engine warranty, he's taking some risk (however small) running a bigger non spec filter. If something was to happen to engine, dealer could use as reason to void engine warranty. Even out vehicle warranty. any filter warranty is voided. The CQ Blue looks to be the best, very similar to maybe same as O'R MicroGard Select. Consensus seems to be a Premium Guard made filter. Imo, unfortunate Advance Auto (AAP) has off shored the CQ red and blue, but no doubt cheaper to make outside US. The bottom line. Thanks for vid.

@@GT-mn3bx Filtration is a balancing act, too tight a mesh and the oil is going through the by pass, too open a mess the smaller micron particles get through. When I had 70's-90's chevy v8s, I always ran the long azz truck filter and a dedicated remote oil cooler w fan. (Trans cooler, with spin on remote filter kit too) Keep that oil clean, use synthetic, and in a decent temp range , and your engine will last a much LONGER time more then your buddies exact same ride who goes to the dealership $$Spends$$ every 3000 miles but sits cooking in traffic idling.

That's the first time I've seen a silicone o-ring and anti drain back valve. It almost looks like the blue filter is the best. But isn't the blue the standard filter, compared to the red and hd?

The red is the base entry filter supplied in bulk to their commercial customers. The blue is their premium line supplied to their commercial customers. Those two are the stocking lines for the places that do oil changes daily. The HD series is generally not supplied to their commercial customers unless specifically requested. They are usually in the back and for the Ag and fleet customers and not the oil change shops.

@WhipCityWrencher

It depends on how much resistance builds up in the oil filter. Even at 65 psi if the resistance for the oil to flow through the oil filter is less than 15 psi the bypass valve won't open. Thanks👍

I've been watching these oil filter comparison videos for years as a DIY car maintenance fanatic for decades. Been changing oil for 40 years now. Your dissecting filters is interesting but doesn't tell us anything about the most important feature: how it filters in a real working engine. So, which one is the best? My humble opinion as I use various brands of oil and filters based on whatever is available or on sale at the time of purchase: It's the frequency of changing the oil and filter that is the most important criteria to keeping your engine running smooth for years NOT the brand of oil or filter.

I noticed the oriental filters don't have paint on the bead lock crimped seam that attaches the can to the tapping plate. There was also over spray inside the can which isn't desirable. This implies that they have a whole different manufacturing process, meaning they paint the can BEFORE the entire filter is assembled. I observed this in one of your recent past videos too with a similar filter. Granted it is in the 'pre filtered' oil area of the filter but after decades of oil filter engineering why would you devolve to a less perfect design or manufacturing process? There are some solvent based oil additives that could scrub that paint off the inside of the can. Notwithstanding that, I have seen some impressive filter made in Vietnam, much more so than China.
@WhipCityWrencher
@WhipCityWrencher 9 ай бұрын
Hi Vince, I don't care for the overspray either. One thing I've noticed also on the Chinese-made oil filters is that there clean, and look good but the filter media under a microscope doesn't look all that good. Thanks!👍

@@WhipCityWrencher I agree Pete! It's funny I thought the same thing. It 'Looks' OK until you give it a closer inspection. The media looked kinda like Swiss cheese. The HD had the thickest medium but not best filtration because its meant to hold more without getting restricting flow. Good pick for higher mileage intervals. But I change mine frequently so id go with Vietnam. Idc how good or bad the Chinese one is I avoid things from China on principle.

Sorry I don't know about car filters, but the function of a filter is to capture as much impurities as possible if I am not wrong. So at the end, when you weigh the filters, you have not even tested them. You don't even know what are the materials that made up these filters. As far as I know US, Vietnam cannot produce the filter materials economically, only China can, so it depends on the specifications given by the buyer of the material, in this case it is CarQuest. So all three filters are made in China, each given different specifications.
