Lyrics:
Dry lightning cracks across the skies
Those storm clouds gather in her eyes
Her daddy was a mean old mister
Mama was an angel in the ground
The weather man called for a twister
She prayed blow it down
There's not enough rain in Oklahoma
To wash the sins out of that house
There's not enough wind in Oklahoma
To rip the nails out of the past
Shatter every window 'til it's all blown away,
Every brick, every board, every slamming door blown away
'Til there's nothing left standing, nothing left of yesterday
Every tear-soaked whiskey memory blown away,
Blown away

As someone who spent 7 years in Nashville as a songwriter, this song almost gets me choked up at how well-written it is. The craft is impeccable. The lyrics leave little breadcrumbs to help the listener piece the story together. Such a unique concept for a song. What a masterpiece.

I also really appreciate the music video for "Blown Away" because it was a slight tribute to "The Wizard of Oz." Carrie Underwood had a few easter eggs sprinkled throughout the video as allusions to "The Wizard of Oz." Carrie's dog Penny Jean is a nod to Dorothy's dog Toto. Carrie is wearing a blue plaid shirt and ruby red boots as a nod to the blue plaid dress and ruby slippers worn by Dorothy. For me personally I couldn't bring myself to listen to "Blown Away" after the devastating nonstop tornadoes in Carrie's home state of Oklahoma; particularly after the violent and destructive EF5 tornado that devastated Moore, Oklahoma on May 20th, 2013 wherein seven of the twenty-four fatalities were children who were killed at Plaza Towers Elementary School. When I learned that seven innocent children lost their lives at Plaza Towers; I couldn't keep myself from crying. This was the second time in my life that I have cried over the loss of young children; the first time was when I heard that twenty children were murdered by a deranged madman at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut on December 14th, 2012. If there's a silver lining to the tornado that hit Moore on May 20th; it's that the residents of Moore adopted a mentality of "Never again!" after the tornado and learning about the seven deaths at Plaza Towers. This galvanized the city council of Moore into voting unanimously in favor of tougher building codes that require a lot of safety features that can better ensure the safety of the residents of Moore and prevent future loss of life. These building codes require all new structures to be bolted to the foundations, less space between the bolts, reinforced garage doors, stronger windows, consistent plywood reinforcement of walls, hurricane clips to hold down roofs, and above ground storm shelters. In addition; all of the schools in Moore now have storm shelters because after the tornado that hit Moore on May 3rd, 1999 only two of the schools in the city had storm shelters: Kelley Elementary School and Westmoore High School. This was due to the fact that both of these particular schools took a direct hit by the May 3rd tornado. The residents of Moore never imagined a storm as strong or as violent as the one on May 3rd, 1999 could ever strike their city again. Unfortunately, the storm on May 20th, 2013 proved them wrong. I personally admire the strength and resilience of the people of Oklahoma because they know how to get back on their feet after a disaster, pick up the pieces of their lives, and rebuild their communities. This particular phenomenon is known as the Oklahoma Standard. You put yourself last and everyone before you comes first.

I'm 54 years old, an abuse survivor. My biological father was an abusive s.o.b I still have nightmares. The first time I heard this song I began hyperventilating and sobbing, because it brought back so many things I tried to forget, things I didn't want to deal with. I'm just now beginning to deal with the trauma of my abuse. Anyone, ANYONE, who is or has been in this situation and reading this please get help. Don't wait until my age to deal with it.

despite everything he's done and all of the pain he's caused her, in a moment of merciful human compassion, she tries to save him, not because he deserves it, but because it's a reflection of her character. But he's still passed out, not responding, and the storm is almost right on top of them. Yet she realizes if she tries any longer to save him, she too would have been swept away. Thus, at that moment she realizes she has to totally prioritize her life over his. She can't save him because he is beyond saving. In other words, you just have to let the abusers go, or they'll (quite literally, I'm afraid) drag you down with them.

Your comment is the best here. I sacrificed years of my life, time, and hard-earned money trying to save my abusive parents and it was no use. Sad to say I lost everything I had in a tornado, December 26th in Rowlett Texas. Year-and-a-half later I met my boyfriend who I thought was so incredible . Then, several months later he grabbed my arm in anger & I said ..never do that again, but he did.. second time I thought of this video. I ran away and he promised he would get help, but he didn't. 2 years and body scars later, it escalated to the point he almost suffocated me.😞 Girls be careful. Never let any man ever grab you or hurt you in anger. Walk away the first time it happens! I love you Carrie for this video

You have no idea how many times he was passed out. If he woke up, I got hit. This song speaks volumes. My father passed away from alcoholism in 2011. It's been 10 years. All I can say is, distance if you need too and get on with life as best as you can. I wish no one the life that I had! However, there is light at the end of the tunnel! I can assure you, this too, shall pass. They will get theirs and have to answer for what they have done. Keep your head up!

My dad might as well been like that. When I told him what his manager employee did to me putting me through sexual hell, he said, it was just all in my head. But he deceived my mom crying like a baby about it. She told me about it the next day. I guess It was shock that kept me from telling her what difference he told me. But he managed to teach me, that guy used alcohol to get his girls in the sack with him which was the trick that manager used on me. I was ten.

tilo dyer well I was all by myself and I stayed at a friend's house. I didn't really visit around much (I was near Albany NY) but I lived like a real American and I was surprised to see how nice everyone was. They literally had me at their house for 10 days and didn't want anything back! The only negative aspect: the food. Whew, I lost 6 lbs while I was there.

Dry lightning cracks across the skies Those storm clouds gather in her eyes Her daddy was mean a old mister Mama was an angel in the ground The weather man called for a twister She prayed blow it down There's not enough rain in Oklahoma To wash the sins out of that house There's not enough wind in Oklahoma To rip the nails out of the past Shatter every window 'til it's all blown away Every brick, every board, every slamming door blown away 'Til there's nothing left standing Nothing left of yesterday Every tear-soaked whiskey memory blown away, blown away, blown away She heard those sirens screaming out Her daddy laid there passed out on the couch She locked herself in the cellar Listened to the screaming of the wind Some people called it taking shelter She called it sweet revenge Shatter every window till it's all blown away Every brick, every board, every slamming door blown away 'Til there's nothing left standing Nothing left of yesterday Every tear-soaked whiskey memory blown away, blown away There's not enough rain in Oklahoma To wash the sins out of that house There's not enough wind in Oklahoma To rip the nails out of the past (blown away) Shatter every window till it's all blown away Every brick, every board, every slamming door blown away (blown away) Till there's nothing left standing Nothing left of yesterday Every tear-soaked whiskey memory blown away Blown away, blown away, blown away, blown away

My old man was an alcoholic ex-Marine DI who died drunk when I was in the Army right before the Gulf War. I quit drinking when I got married over 25 years ago to the woman in the next room from me. I'm glad I did. I'm the same age he was when he died and have a retirement income and a wife who still loves me which is more than he had when he died. I get along much better with his ghost now but then we always got along better when we weren't living together,

Carrie Underwood is one of the few country artists that I, an avid rock/pop/kpop listener enjoys. That just goes to show how she appeals to not only country fans, but to people who enjoy all sorts of music.

My father is a cheater , a liar, ex-drug abuser, punched holes in the walls, screamed at me and my mother for no reason, has been to jail to many times to count, abused the animals, my mom was in the hospital and he had women over every night, after my mom passed away he had the audacity to call her his wife when they were never married, gave his new baby girl my mother’s middle name and she isn’t even my mom’s Edit: I currently live with my aunt my father was never there for his children (there are five us) except for the younger two. He recently threatened to run away
