We traveled to Egypt over the Christmas holiday period in 2022/2023. Though our time was brief, we made the most of it by exploring the Nile river valley, starting in Cairo where we saw Islamic Cairo, Coptic Cairo, and the pyramids of Giza and Saqqara. We flew down to Aswan where we stayed in a Nubian village and toured Abu Simbel before we boarded the Movenpick Sun Ray for a 3-night cruise to Luxor. Along the way, we visited Kom Ombo and Edfu. In Luxor, we saw the Valley of the Kings, Colossi of Memnon, and the temples of Hatshepsut, Karnak, and Luxor. Egypt is full of archaeological wonders and it was a dream come true to see them in person.

This is a fantastic vlog. Thank you for putting the effort into doing this. We are going to Egypt in 4 weeks and this has given me a realistic idea of what to expect, although we are having a 7 night Nile cruise and 3 nights in Cairo. I’m very excited about visiting Egypt and your vlog has got me looking at the guide books again to refresh my memory about a bit of the history and what we really want to see. A lovely family and lucky to have parents who love to travel and introduce their family to other cultures and experiences.

how was your trip? worth going?
@dawnrearden2374
@dawnrearden2374 4 ай бұрын
@matawherolloyd236 it was amazing. The Nile cruise had some very early starts but there were times when the boat was on the move where you could relax and watch the world go by. It's a scene that I suspect hadn't changed much for hundreds of years. The poverty we saw did disturb me, I must say. The people were all so welcoming, friendly and keen to talk to you. Of course there are the 'hard sell' vendors and those trying to scam you, but watching the vlogs we did put us wise to them. The ancient sites were simply amazing, and I get goosebumps each time I think about the fact that I was inside the Great Pyramid. Do go if you can. Egypt badly needs tourists. You won't be disappointed.

Why shouldn’t you ride the camels?
@CarrieCook
@CarrieCook 10 ай бұрын
@@be4202 most of the camels we saw at the pyramids didn't appear to be treated very well - many were gaunt and obviously underfed, and others were being handled with a lot of force (whipping, etc.) It's a bit of an ethical conundrum; would supporting the cameleer allow him to feed his animal more? Maybe, but I think a lot of people choose not to ride the camels so they aren't supporting the abuse. There are also lots of stories from people who are quoted one rate for a camel ride and then get the bait-and-switch where they aren't allowed to dismount the camel until they have paid more. The government has tried to eliminate this practice by establishing a fixed rate for camel rides. You will see signs posted around the pyramids advertising this (currently it's 500 Egyptian pounds for 1 hour). But there are still some incidents being reported.

What a coincident! We just came back from very similar trip a few weeks ago (Mar/2023). Moustafa was our Cairo guide. He was FANTASTIC. Luxor, Movenpick Nile cruise, Edfu, Kom Ombo, Aswan & Abu Simbel, all same. Maybe we fed the same cats you saw:) One thing I agree with you would be Aswan -> Luxor will be better than other way around (which we did). Only additional place I can recommend is El Fayoum so that you can experience an edge of Sahara desert. We also loved Mudawara Mt. Thank you for this video that you edited so tasteful.
@CarrieCook
@CarrieCook Жыл бұрын
I'm so happy to see Moustafa getting some love - he was a wonderful guide and if I were lucky enough to go back, I'd book him again in a heartbeat. Sounds like we both traveled the very well beaten tourist path, but with such significant monuments along the way - why wouldn't you go to those places? I'll have to check out your other recommendations if we make it back someday.

Thank you! I can’t remember what sidetracked me, but I didn’t wind up recording very much there at all. I do remember the paintings on the ceiling being particularly beautiful and I also remember being harassed quite a bit by a guard who wanted to let us into a restricted area to take photos in exchange for a tip. Maybe that’s what put me off.

Im in Egypt now n I wish Egyptians know a little bit of English...this has made communication breakdown for low budget travellers Attractions are really great to visit n food is delicious.I will definitely come back again. Beware of scammers..they are everywhere Sad to see young street beggars ....they should be studying .Decided not to give them money as it would encourage them to become beggars....instead,I offered food to them. OMG ! This is one nation with very good looking people...babies are like dolls. People are friendly Night life is fantastic..shops are open till the wee hours. Egypt is land of scrumptious food n delicious juices ,ice- creams etc....one can never go hungry ..

@@CarrieCook I hope I can make to Petra, too. I just saw on a map on CNN that there was fighting in Sudan (near Egypt) and some other country (near Jordan). So far, I've had 3 trips cancelled over the last few years - Switzerland by a tour company I went to France with and was going to be a back-to-back "revenge" tour (unknown, but I suspect not enough people signed up), Ireland (myself as a Covid caution) and Spain by a tour company (Covid there, too). Of course, with an average of over 1.5 mass shootings/day, the U S of A is not a safe bet anymore either. I bet Canada doesn't have as much violence...maybe I should just drive up and say "hi," wherever it is you're from.

@@garyausten5939 you are due for some good luck then! We had several Covid-era trips cancelled too, and are trying to make up for lost time. I'd love to say Canada doesn't have violence but unfortunately it's on the rise here, too. We've had a number of random attacks on public transit lately, which would have been unthinkable for us just a few years ago. Life is short - no time like the present to get out and explore.

Thank you for your video... I have watched about 6 of these from different travelers as I am truly excited about my trip and yours gave me hope. The others scared me to be honest...made me feel unsafe and like I needed to wear a burka the whole time I am in country since. I am an old redhead - I was afraid I was just going to get pounced on for my fair skin.... so I was so relieved to see fair skin, normal clothing... normal reactions... and I may actually return some of the purchases others made me feel obligated to make. I will definitely be able to travel lighter!!!!!! God bless you and your family. Glad you had such an amazing experience ... hope my daughter and I can do the same.

I think a lot of Egypt travel videos on KZfaq take a click-bait approach and sensationalize the issues. And I do feel bad for people who visit Egypt without knowing what to expect because I can see how it would be a bit of a shock. But if you go in knowing what to expect and aren’t afraid to say no and stand your ground, I think it’s manageable. And the sights you will see are unrivalled anywhere else in the world, and make the hassle worth it. Enjoy your trip.

Thank you Carrie for putting this vlog together. So much thoughts, time and effort must have gone into it as it's one of THE MOST informative, beautifully-stitched and well-narrated travel logs on Egypt we've watched! It's esp. nice to finally have a glimpse of you at the end of the vlog :) We're bringing our kids (9yo and 15yo) to Egypt next month (Winter, Dec'23) and your vlog has given our family lots of insights and things to look forward to! Keep travelling and inspiring others around the globe. XOXO, Angie & David from Singapore

Fantastic video, great job! Headed there this week on a Nile River Cruise. In your opinion with all the sightseeing you did if you had to take a crazy early flight to Abu Simbel is it worth it or are there many other amazing things to see and I can feel no guilt and sleep in and relax?!!!
@CarrieCook
@CarrieCook 3 ай бұрын
How exciting - enjoy your trip! I have mixed thoughts about Abu Simbel. On the one hand, it is a long way to travel to see yet another temple, on a trip when you are likely to be visiting temple after temple after temple. Unless you are a keen historian, they can tend to blur together after a while. On the other hand, Abu Simbel has probably the most impressive entrance of any of the temples we visited. There is something about those 4 imposing Ramesses II statues that is just so awe-inspiring. Their scale is massive, and the story of how the temple was relocated to save it from the Nile's floodwaters is amazing. If you can account for the cost of the flights in your budget, I would probably make the trip. My general opinion is that trips are for seeing and doing as much as possible, and I can sleep when I get home. 😉

Hi Carrie, Absolutely loved your video. My daughter and I are leaving on Dec 1 until Dec 12. Your video was very informative and showed us what to look forward too. Just wondering if the weather at that time will be hot. We are Canadian as well.
@CarrieCook
@CarrieCook 10 ай бұрын
Hi Jan, glad you enjoyed it! I don't think you'll find it hot. We visited late December/early Jan and I would guess daytime temps were around 20-22 C, overnight temps down to about 12-13 C. I typically wore lightweight long pants and a short or long sleeved t during the day. The guys, who run a bit hotter than me, occasionally wore shorts and a t shirt during the day, but usually we were all in pants and a jacket at night. It was a couple degrees warmer down in Aswan as compared to Cairo. Hope that helps and have an amazing trip!
