I watch cars slide down this hill every time there's a snow storm or ice. I love the song and hope it doesn't get taken down. Also, see my blog, Seen In Yonkers. www.tumblr.com/blog/seeninyonkers

Great job. The combination of the perfect song (in so many ways) and the live sound. This is classic.

When I used to drive an 18-wheeler, there was a time when I had to do the inching thing down a mountain in Kentucky once and that was the most frightening experience of all. Luckily there was truck stop at the bottom of the mountain where I stayed until the snowstorm was over.

No studded tires allowed in Toronto, Ontario. I've been up steep hill with 4 winter tires and a FWD no problems. At the bluffs and twyn rivers. With about a 4-6 inches of snow. Winter tires do make a difference b.c you could never get up those 2 hills I mentioned without them after a major snow fall. Personal experience, 17 years driving. 4 years riding. Soon to join the GM club.

Actually the Odell Ave hill from Warburton Ave to N.Broadway is a scarier hill to manuever in rain, sleet, or snow must less ice! Ashburton from Warburton to Neperhan is a wild one too. A few years ago I was on the City Line 1 Bus coming up from 242nd Subway station and when it got to the Court house/Police Barracks on Bway it slid down from the Hospital all the way to the Neperhan/Main Street intersection and that wasn't even as steep as the other hills in Yonkers

This is Arthur St. at Warburton. There are definitely steeper, curvier hills in Yonkers. Try Morsemere or Macassin (sp?) a little further east. They are crazy steep.

If people are going to insist that the don't need 4WD in the winter, then I insist you stay home till the streets are cleared of snow.
@chuck61879 жыл бұрын
lockdownrocks You don't need 4WD in the winter. Years ago I would put snow tires on all four wheels with a rear wheel drive vehicle with no problems. Snow tires in the front for cornering traction and of course in the rear for forward traction. My current vehicles are 4WD with snow tires for the winter and I have no trouble getting through except for the motorist I get behind with "all season" tires going about 20 m.p.h. in a 55 m.p.h. speed zone with 4WD! Snow tires are the answer!
@wopmf4345FxFDxdGaa208 жыл бұрын
+lockdownrocks Good tires help you much more than 4WD. 4WD doesn't improve braking or cornering at all, but snow tires do.

@xmlrider19 жыл бұрын
You are correct. And a few points to keep in mind for going UP a snowy/icy incline: 1) have snow tires and / or chains if you're going to try that. That is the #1 reason people fail to go up hills in inclement weather. 2) don't keep hitting your brakes 3) Getting any momentum going on a slippery incline is next to impossible from a stationary position. If possible, NEVER come to a complete stop at the bottom of an icy/snowy hill. That means timing it so you're not trapped behind some f*&^%$#g idiot who doesn't know how to drive. 4) When all else fails, turn around and take an alternate course. You may be an hour late getting to work or home, but you won't have a crumpled car or end up dead.

Nice bit of hill and good capture of the nightmare that is snow to a driver. I still hold to me belief that automatic gearboxes in cars are no good, especially in winter, like here. A Manual gearbox could be put in a low gear and the engine can brake cars coming down, instead of dancing down on the brakes, thus resulting in a steady descent, that and a good set of winter tyres.

Yep. And these people should understand not to drive when it's been snowing like that if they don't have proper winter tires... It's sort of funny to watch them struggle like that, but that's actually dangerous...
@freethenorth75839 жыл бұрын
Pekka Kilpeläinen Winter tires don't make a big difference; I know, I'm from Canada. To go up that hill easily you would need 4WD and studded tires.
9 жыл бұрын
VideosWorthSpreading Well, I'm an automotive engineer and car enthusiast (I guess you can call me one) from FInland. So I think I know something too. Winter tires make a world of difference when it snows. And I'm talking about proper winter tires, not any american style all-season stuff. For me, the best part about winter is driving. I'm not into skiing or skating or anything like that. I like driving in the snow and on ice. At the moment I have three cars: FWD, RWD and 4WD. My cars have had studded and studless winter tires. But always good ones. I don't think you need 4WD to get up that hill. It is kinda hard to tell just how steep it is from a video, but it seems totally manageable with a 2WD car on good tires. It doesn't even look icy, so studless tires would work pretty much as good as studded ones, as there isn't a thick sheet of ice for the studs to bite into. Looks snowy and slushy, which is bad enough with summer tires. There are many aspects to being a good driver. Especially in winter how you are able to handle your car is important. But at least as important is to understand the conditions and adapt to them. This seems a bit hard even for drivers in Finland these days, especially with new cars that have stability control systems and such. Drivers are losing their grip on reality. When you have summer tires on your car and it looks like that outside, adapting means take the bus. A good driver knows when not to drive.
@freethenorth75839 жыл бұрын
Regardless of incline, if you're starting from the bottom of that hill without any momentum, chances are you aren't making it without a significant loss of traction all the way up. There is just too much snow for the tires not to spin until they grip the pavement. We have snow here half the year and get 6-12 feet of it, so I don't care if you just came out of Harvard with a degree in snowytractionology.
@tackssherbo71049 жыл бұрын

What can he do to help? Go down there and push cars down an icy hill? Maybe he could place some signs up, even though all drivers here would be aware of the snow on the road. Maybe he can shovel the snow away, so some of it can melt and form ice/black ice on the road?
