2:58 That actually IS how colors work! Perfectly white paint reflects all the light that hits it and keeps it from absorbing it and turning it into heat. The space shuttle, for example, was covered in white “blankets” made from heat-resistant cloth, at least on the parts that wouldn’t be directly exposed to the flames of re-entry. Black paint, on the other hand, absorbs AND RELEASES heat the best. Because it would be hit directly with plasma instead of just being near it, they coated the bottom of the shuttle in black, super heat-resistant tiles to dump the excess heat out as fast as possible.
