When you compare performance you need to use similar engines.

I don’t think it’s fair to compare the 30d with this 400d. I think the M50d would’ve made sense to compare it with this 400d or to use the 350d with this 30d

Bit of an unfair comparison when it comes to the engine and maybe looks wise as well?

This is not a fair comparison. Where is the M50d?

After 10+ years with different MBs (Now in a E400 estate) I chose between the GLE and X5 because unlike other hybrids they offer an actual usable range on electric drive making commuting in my case almost only on electric drive 100km a day charging at work as well. I tried the Tesla X as well really wanted to like it, but build quality was horrible. When MB,BMW,Polestar and Audi deliver quality built long range electric vehicles Tesla is going to be in trouble... Driving Mercedes now and coming with the expectation to get the GLE before I tried them I ended up ordering the X5 hybrid. Pros for the GLE is the interior size, but that is it... Engine is unresponsive (tried the 400 wanted to try the Hybrid but it is still nt available here), air suspension is set up for the US market (like a Cadillac) feels like a boat rocking all over the place even in sports mode. Fair enough its really comfortable in a straight line but it does not do turns well and should hunker down and perform in sportsmode which it fails to do. And the dash screen (the same as on my E) looks like it was an afterthought on this model like it was aftermarket and not fitted to the design of the interior like on the E where it fits perfectly. Rear mirror is the smallest I have ever experienced in a modern car! Adjusting the rear seat backs has you running to the boot then to the top of the seat and finally the seat adjuster on the rear passenger door (did they use someone from Italy to design that setup?) X5 much more responsive, better suspension (much more comparable to my E400 air suspension in its different settings), fast when needed, handles really well. Negatives well a bit less room in the rear passenger area compared to the GLE. which is a non issue unless your transporting 3 +190 cm adults in the rear (headroom is fine, legroom is not.) Plenty of room for in my case, 3 kids. Boot even with the battery of the hybrid I could load up plenty for a family of 5. The overall feel of the X5 compared to the GLE was that X5 was a better quality vehicle, quite a surprise to me who had my heart set on the GLE. Price, well when you finished crossing in the options you want they are just about the same, marginal difference. Now I just have to wait for delivery...My first beamer.

Ciro is one of the best reviewers there is. Right up there with Matt Watson from carwow. I’d still take the Beemer though.

Both are amazing machines. Whatever you bought is a good buy. I actually a MB fan but incredibly buy a BMW X5 2020. Zero complains

1:50 *I have a W245 B Class (B200 CDi AMG Line Sport) and am constantly amazed at the power (Torque) at very low engine revs, it will happily pull away in ECO Mode in 7th Gear from 1200 rpm and delivers incredible MPG (best I have got is 74.3 mpg over a 90 mile journey) In 'Sport' mode it is crazy and have only used this on rare occasions, as to me MPG is more relevant than MPH although did achieve 142 mph on German Autobahn, and would have gone faster but had to brake.*

4:35 *I can get 2 adult size Mountain Bikes with rear seats folded in the 'boot' of my B200 CDi without having to remove wheels etc. Love it , and it also is a great tow car I have a Pegasus 462 Caravan (1137 kg) which it pulls with ease, and although it hammers the MPG still manages just short of 30 mpg, better than many current 'motorhomes'*

Whats nice on the BMW, is its off-capability. (In SUV terms, it no Land Cruiser!) The X5 you tested's got the optional off-road pack, which includes all-terrain tyres (notice the knobby rubber) and a rear mechanical diff-lock - and that can take it places you wouldn't think is possible with a X5!

If you've got many kilometres of driving experience of BMW as well as Mercedes, you'll understand what he's talking about - two different cars/philosophies. BMW accentuates the sporting side to it with a very low seating position, whereas Merc gives a higher, more commanding driving position.

I would love to own both of them. No sedan, just 2 massive SUVs

You got it bang on, the merc suspension is like being on the sea, that’s what makes bimmer a drivers car.

Every opinion is valid, its a matter of personal decision. Some like bmw, others mercedes. I had a c63 2018 but wanted a SUV. Obviously I went first to see the GLE and then the BMW. Like them both in general but decided to switch to BMW and buy the X5 because liked more its external design. I dont know why, but the tail of the GLE for me doesnt look cool ( its tends to remember me a Kia Cerato) I Prefer the previous GLE version, on the contrary, the X5 tail looks so fucking amazing, love it. Also, the GLEs dashboard looks weird with that horizontal screen. Looks like if you removed the original one and installed an aftermarket screen. In terms of equipment, every brand in the world offers you whatever the hell you want but obviously costs more, so its not impressive to have electric/heated seats, cameras, etc. Equipment now a days is the same shit in every car. Regarding engines, both are similar, nothing ridiculously different. In conclusion, being a fan and owner of both brands, in this vs, the X5 was the correct choice.

The Merc is R600k more than the BM. Now the 50d ...that’s the bomb. But do you need that much power in a SAV. The Merc 300gle is the one you should compare power for power even though the Merc is a 20L engine but the 30D BMW is still cheaper than the 30gle Merc.

Although similar in size, the natural competitor for the 400d amg would be the X5 40d which is not yet available in SA (M50d competes with the Mercedes 450 GLE). The Merc in this review was also a lot more specced on top of the amg package however that interior is a lot more futuristic. That said the X5 will remain a class leader because it's a better all-rounder, slightly cheaper and offers a superior blend of performance and fuel consumption almost across the range. Awesome review as always by Ciro

1) The comparison is totally off since the GLE seems to have an AMG kit on it whereas the X5 is base model. 2) Since the GLE apparently feels "roomier" according to this guy, the X5's interior is bigger than that of the GLE. 3) The X5 is indeed very sporty as it does 0-60 in 5 seconds flat whereas the GLE does it in 7-8 seconds. The X5 due to its shape is said to be more in control for the driver than the GLE as it indeed feels very heavy and big. idk y but this guy didnt give a fair comparison. I think he's being biased here Beemer anyday :-)
