Very rarely has a car caused as much of a stir as this, the new GWM P-Series bakkie. Named the GWM Poer in other markets, and the GWM Cannon in Australia, the P-Series has arrived on our shores and has serious intentions to upset the bakkie market in South Africa.
In this video, we take the very top of the range P-Series double cab 2.2 LT 4x4 out onto the Atlantis dunes outside Cape Town, and we're joined by the similarly priced Ford Ranger XL Sport 4x4. While these bakkies are not necessarily rivals, the fact that they are similarly priced illuminates what good value the P-Series represents.
We wanted to go in-depth with this review and so it is a lengthy one, where we take a good look at the interiors of both bakkies, the features and tech on offer, the load bed size, general ride and comfort on and off-road, and of course pricing and warranties.

And it would make sense since cars these days aren't made to last. l have a '96 BMW 740il and a '89 Ford Cortina (service myself). They still chug along while my wife's 2019 Polo Vivo is already dying and we paid over R20,000 recently to somewhat fix a few things. We're currently looking for a small suv for her, which is, you've guessed Hyundai.

That's not saying people are going to sacrifice quality for price. In this case, Chinese cars are just getting better every year. A few years ago, you wouldn't dream of wanting a Chinese car but now, looking at the Chinese market, you can see so many cars you would like sitting in your driveway. Link and Co comes to mind.

Had my P series Top of the Range LT 4x4 Since January, done 11000km, 30% of that off road. Frankly its just brilliant. Done quite a few long distance highway journeys as well, literally like being in premium SUV, with more features than most. Its just effortless, smooth, comfortable, quiet, has every creature comfort you need and some you didn't even know existed. Frankly I have no idea how they get all that into the price they sell it for. Perhaps SA will begin to realise how overpriced and under-specced some of the other brands really are.

People complaining about gwm reliability when they heard its chinese, probably knows nothing about gwm! i personally have an amarok and x350, but our company has a fleet of steeds, cant say they ride well but they have never failed us over the decade. I test drove the P series passenger auto 4x4 a month ago, very quiet, rides superb, i can say as good as amarok! Interior is better than the amarok and x350! Only three things i didnt like about it. 1. Turbo lag is quite evident, 2. I am seeing Haval H2 everywhere these days and the owners seem very impressed. This GWM is a massive step forward it will be interesting to see how well they can take market share from especially Ford and Toyota. It's a tough ask South Africans are super brand loyal especially the bakkie market. With the Haval the market segment is a bit easier to penetrate as an outsider I think

This is best review I've seen of the GWM P-Series /ute /bakkie/truck !!!!💯 Other reviewers are very bias and did not get into detail like you did. This bakkie is a beast and offers alot for that price, honestly it has the best interior I've seen in a bakkie,You would think your in a SUV, It outclasses the ranger. It definitely is a game changer as the sales are showing across the globe. Its hard for some brand loyalists to accept the challenge GWM brings but it is what it is and the bakkie is selling alot and they GWM-Haval really went all out on this one👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏼👏🏿👏

Value for money is not only measured by the purchase price & spec, but also the useful life you can get out of the vehicle with the least amount of issues & cost of ownership... Between a Toyota Hilux & the P-Series 10 years , 250 000 - 400 000 km from now which one do you think would have visited the dealer more for things other than regular servicing & which one do you think would be worth more at that point?

@@yuanli2490 Nothing is perfect, but you’ll have a better chance in a Toyota... your situation sounds catastrophic though. I’m basing what I’m saying on my own experience with Toyota products of which we have had many examples. For work (family business) we’re currently running 3 Toyota Hiluxs, one 4.0 V6 D/C & two 2.7 S/Cs... two of them are just over 10 years old & over 200 000 km & one is under 10 years old... we work these bakkies hard & they’re usually laden & sometimes over laden. Up to this point we have had no serious issues or faults, they never complain & we especially make those 2.7s scream for their supper when they’re loaded... We have had to replace the clutch on the one S/C just under 200 000 km, but the clutch is a wearable component & they tend to wear faster if you’re constantly laden. Other than that they’ve only ever been in for regular servicing. Before those three the last Hilux we traded in was also a 2.7 S/C (2003 model) also a working truck, when we traded it in it was close to 300 000 km, also had no issues, still ran as sweet as it did as new when we sold it. My dad also had 2 other Hiluxs & a one Ford Ranger before that. No car is perfect, not even Toyota, however I have personally experienced 4 separate samples over that last 20 years & our bakkies work harder than your average bakkie as they’re usually laden & I can personally attest to Toyota’s general durability. Toyota has proven itself over a long period of time... There’s a reason behind the fact that you can’t drive for 5 mins in South Africa without passing at least one Hilux. There’s also a reason there’s still just as many 1990’s HiAce Toyota minibus taxis still jumping red lights with 25 people onboard nearly 30 years later... can you imagine the mileage on those things, as much as South African taxis annoy me, you gotta admire the durability of those things if we’re still seeing thousands of the damn things still on our roads 30 years later... Also if you look on auto trader & sort all vehicles by mileage you’ll find most are Japanese & they hold better value than others... I mean why is a 1989 Toyota Hilux with 300 000 km still selling for R100k? There’s a 2007 2.5D-4D Hilux S/C SRX with 709 000 km on the clock selling for R129k, there’s multiple Hiluxs with around 500 000km selling around R130k... I’m guessing you won’t find that P-Series in 10 years time with mileage like that...

You are a true journalist though this is not a proper test off course, but convincing. Lower tyre pressure in a bakkie makes it so much more comfotable, if only manufacturers put more thread on the sides of the thread to give it an even wear. With the Potent you can afford to lower the pressure even if you may get 8000km+- less on a set etc.
