This may or may not be helpful to anyone but I realized (for myself) it’s important to not overthink everything. When I first started practicing driving a manual I was super focused on getting the car moving and releasing the clutch perfectly. Despite this, the car would always jerk. One time, though, I was distracted in a conversation with someone, and subconsciously got the car moving, as smooth as ever. I didn’t even realize what I did until a couple seconds after

@@baseballer21and0 I was being taught to drive a manual car and I was told that you beed to practice finding the bite point or friction zone but I actually learned that instead of revving to 1k and like most people tell you to rev up to 2k or 2.5k because its easier to release the clutch and it makes for a much smother take off like and automatic car would and its easier to do instead of thinking about feathering the gas.

As a European dude I can say 90% of us drive manuals here, in almost every country in the continent. I live in a small EU country called malta which has the steering wheel on the right side like the UK. I'm trying to Imagine driving automatic on the left side your entire life and then trying to drive stick while driving in what we consider the passenger seat haha. I found it confusing when I drove on the left side in iceland, kept touching my arm on the door to switch gears for the first 30 mins. we learn on manuals as the norm, and fun fact if you learn on an automatic car your license won't be valid to drive manuals. I'm smiling and finding the comments wholesome with americans coming here to calm down from the panic and learn the basics :) You got this guys

Manual car driver here - great explanation. I'd add that usually we don't watch revs on the tachometer (which in this case is a combined display for revs/speed), but listen to the engine to decide when to shift gear. Also, when parking on a hill, the smart drivers move the shifter in first gear with the nose of the car pointing up, and in rear with the nose pointing down to make maximum use of the resistance of the drive train.

Yes, but that's for experienced manual car driver. Beginners need to start somewhere and have a reference to get to know the car.

In my case, I can feel the engine and just time it in my head. The tip about reverse, it varies from one brand to another, just ask your dealer. They will know. However with Volkswagen and Audi, you usually push DOWN on the shifter so the lockout bump slides under the boot and into R. Been driving MINIs and VWs for 14 years with manuals and will never give them up.

this actually clarified so much. when i crashed my auto car my friend sold me an old manual nissan pulsar for $500 because i desperately needed a car, although i had zero experience and very little know how of how to drive manual. He drove me around the block once at 11:00pm to show me how it’s done and then he sent me on my way. I drove that car in morning rush hour traffic every day from then on just vibing it out in a sink or swim situation hahaha. I drove that car for 2 years no real worries but until now almost 5years later can i understand what I was doing right and what I never truly understood. 😂

I'm still learning, mostly teaching myself. When I got hired on for the company I work for, they taught us juuuuust enough to load manuals onto and off the haulers. Though now that we've basically done away with our towing service and business has gotten to the point which we don't have enough haulers to meet demands of our activities, they have us driving cars to the customers and/or driving the swap/trades back or getting a ride back from a coworker. Same thing if someone's selling their car to us, we'll have a coworker drive us to them then drive the sold car back. A lot of times, when one of us gets assigned a vehicle that's a manual, we have to play around with schedules to make sure someone who knows how to drive stick gets the activity. So anytime there's downtime at the shop, I try to find a manual and practice around with it. This video is extremely helpful and I appreciate it so much.

Recently bought a 22 GR86 manual. I’ve driven my dads civic once and my friends fiesta once. Did ok. I had to drive it from the dealership home which is about an hour away. The only part I struggle with is to get going. I either stall in my car or take off a little too fast. But this is helping me so much already learning to not let off the clutch so fast and control my gas better
@rollmops3113
@rollmops3113 2 ай бұрын
How are you doing with the manual now? How long did it take for it to become second nature? I'm getting my first manual car tomorrow, and though I've (badly) driven manuals a couple of times before, I am really nervous and worried that I'm going to wreck the clutch and/or gearbox!
@ianlerma8110
@ianlerma8110 2 ай бұрын
@@rollmops3113oh dude, it took me less than a week to be able to comfortably drive around town without stalling. It’s actually really easy. It’s way more intimidating than it is. Some helpful tricks I found is to one, turn off the AC and any HVAC components. I thought it helped me out, not sure if it actually did, but technically it should because of less load on the engine. two, find the bite point of the clutch and don’t look at the RPMs, trust me. I know you want to look at them but it’s so much easier to kinda stare off and just focus purely on your leg movements of slowly letting out the clutch and giving it a little gas. You’ll feel when the car wants to go and you can hear it too. Listen to the car, sounds weird but you’ll understand when you’re doing it so turn the radio off as well. Third is try and find a parking lot that’s not flat. I had found one that went a little up hill and a little bit downhill. Going downhill aids in taking off and learning on an uphill well allow you to learn that you need more gas/ to not let off the clutch as quickly. And just focus on learning how to take off. that’s the hardest part about these cars. It’ll take a little time but you got this. Just practice for about an hour or so a day. And don’t be scared to stall. Stalling isn’t really bad. Riding the clutch excessively and using it to control speed it bad though. The clutch is more a on and off thing. Except reverse. You can use the clutch to control the speed because it’s usually for such a short distance. Other than that, this video is great advice as well, it’s what taught me so you’ll be able to get it

I'm a single mom stuck learning manual by myself as I inherited a car after my old one was impounded. Its been a challenge (and embarassing) doing this by myself but I'm strangely proud of myself. I had so many people try to convince me to trade it for an automatic but I know nothing major is wrong with this almost 20 year old car and I'm too afraid to trade it for an unknown car that might be on the brink of major repairs. If it's in working condition, I might as well figure this out. But it definitely hasn't been easy doing it by myself. 😅 I think I've been accelerating too much through changing the gears.

I know I’m pretty late, hopefully you got the hang of it now. Anyway you aren’t supposed to add ANY throttle when up shifting. When you up shift you need to take your right foot completely off the gas, push the clutch all the way in, up shift, and then take the clutch out. When up shifting there’s no fancy clutch work, just push in, then let it out.

@@TaikaJamppa DO add gas when you down shift 👍🏼 Just not on upshift

I feel like you can't go too hard on the accelerate with a petrol anyway. If you drive a Diesel car, that's a different story however

What a good video, I’m a year into driving manual and this exposed some flaws in my method, currently waiting on my new clutch to be delivered😂

As someone who lives in the Alps (where almost everyone only drives manual transmission cars and got manual trannies for driving schools) you did a great job on this vid :) - as an advanced vid based on this one would be fuel economy and optimal rpm ranges for given situations :D

This is how we save the manual folks. Driving a manual is not so bad and elevates the driving experience.

I should be given a gold medal for "Save the manual" champion. I have not driven automatic car [as permanent car] in 23 years and currently own 3 MT cars for me and children. Wife drives auto but she drives MT really well.

It’s more fun driving a manual. I suck at it (still practicing) but it’s still funny when I fail miserably 😭.

Thanks for this detailed video. I have 60,000 km and 6 years of use, on a manual RHD car. Still it's nice to go through the basics allover again. Believe this video could be a simplified Bible for beginners.
