Carstens Amplification

3 жыл бұрын

Carstens Amplification® and Billy Corgan have combined creative talents to change the guitar amplifier game. Versatile, articulate high gain and supreme tone.
Brian Carstens has long been working with the Smashing Pumpkins as an amplifier technician. In late 2018, Billy Corgan and Brian began discussing an amp collaboration. Billy expressed, in over 30 years of creating music, “I have never played a high gain amp that I like.” Billy’s lofty request: for Brian to make him an amp with an unheard of amount of gain, high headroom and distinct tone. Brian got to work, and the Carstens Amplification® Grace amplifier was born. Billy was so blown away by the Grace that this custom project turned into this signature Billy Corgan amplifier - Billy’s first and only. To really understand why Billy Corgan calls the Grace “a game changer” and “a step forward,” take a listen.
This versatile, 100W, single channel amplifier offers a staggering amount of articulate high gain, yet is exceptionally responsive to changes in your guitar volume. As such, your Grace can go from clean, crunch to breathtaking overdrive with the turn of a volume, or gain control.
Each Grace is completely handwired using premium components, including specially designed, hand-wound Mercury Magnetics transformers.
The result is a beautifully open and 3-dimensional high-gain overdrive with incredible note separation.
All amplifiers are handmade by Brian Carstens.

A lot of new guitarist hear this and don't like it . When you get some stage time and HOPEFULLY realize your sonic space this amp will make so much more sense to you . It cuts through and sounds great .

This comment section is funny. A bunch of dbags coming to watch Billy Corgan play so they can say he can’t play. And I bet feeling pretty good about it lol I mean, a whole lotta records would prove otherwise, and of course we don’t have anything to compare against from these KZfaq warriors, but that’s okay. You showed him guys.

The funny thing is, billy was a shredder in his pre smashing pumpkins days so could probably play faster and shreddier than any of these dbags . He chooses to be a songwriter and serve the song instead of entering the guitarlympics.

Interesting to me how much Billy’s tonal instinct has shifted. Maybe it has to do with being more studio oriented but all the old sounds I associated with a specific low end response, ie the big muffs, dimarzios, diezel...and now with the reverends and this amp he seems to be leaning in to a much more up front, upper mid focused tonality. Maybe has something to do with the 3 guitar arrangement they got going as well.

Really unusual to still be able to get that much cut and attack on the transients with something this high gain. I could see why someone like Corgan would want an amp voiced like this - it'll hold it's own in a context where it has to share frequencies with a lot of other huge sounding instruments.

@philboxall

@@iditarod4081 in production/mixing ‘Transient’ is the word used to refer to the initial loudest part of a note or sound. So for guitar, think of the pick attack. But you could also use the word to refer to the initial attack of a snare hit, for instance. Hope that helps!

Sounds great! My one question is... With one channel, playing a whole set, does he mess with the gain knob mid song? It's seems like that's what he's implying in the video. I suppose you could dial the volume back on your guitar... And decide whether you need a treble bleed or not... Or have a pedal for gain cutting, instead of boosting... Dover came out with an Amp that is kind of like one channel... Or.. 2 identical channels, to have different settings. It does have a built-in boost though, designed specifically for that amp. It actually sounds better than any other boost I've tried with that specific amp.
@CarstensAmplification

I also liked when can halen played keyboard, when many didn't like it. I just prefer billys riff and solos, and he is left handed, and it's hard to find left handed guitarists that have a very cool sounds.
