My favorite memory is of this 1995 final race at Laguna Seca, which Gil deFerran won as a rookie, taking rookie of the year, beating all those greats. But the best moment is in Victory Lane, being interviewed by Gary Gerould, when Gil's wife brings in his baby daughter, and the baby cries, and Gil takes the baby and puts his finger to his lips asking all in Victory Lane to shush to let the baby calm - and the baby does, playing with the microphone - absolutely sweet and classic. And in the years since then - wonderful man, amazing driver, a real class act. Much missed, all sympathy to his family, friends, team members, those he raced with and against; but Oh what wonderful memories. He showed us all How To Do It.

I was the photojournalist at the winner circle and watching Gil winning. Yes, I remember when Gil told everyone to be silent because he had his baby girl in his arms in the winner circle. I always recorded great video and fotos at Laguna Seca because you can move to different places of the track.

PS This was one of the Best races ever in Indycar, in one of the Best seasons of Indycar - 10 winners!

Michael should have stayed with Gannasi racing and he might have won another championship or two! And then Newman-Haas stuck with Ford over the Honda. Mistake.

I think Newman-Haas was always home for Michael. If not for The Split, and Carl Haas' resistance to returning to Indy, he may have retired as a Newman-Haas driver.
