He was a young man looking for an exciting rendezvous on the dating app, Grindr. But within minutes of meeting his love match, he knew something was horribly wrong. What followed was a terrifying ordeal of beatings, torment, and robbery from which he escaped alive but with deep psychological scars. What’s more, he’s not the only victim: In a worrying trend, opportunistic criminals are using online dating apps to “catfish”, blackmail and rob people whose only desire is to find love or a fleeting romance. Many of those who’ve fallen victim to these crimes say they’ve received little support from the police, and the app developers are refusing responsibility. In a special two-part report, Carte Blanche investigates.

Let's be really honest though, the bike delivery guys also ride quite recklessly. Skipping Traffic lights, not stopping at Stop streets. They are delivering a key service but they aren't exactly safe on the road. Adding to this, I've seen some guys on bikes that are not safe or even roadworthy and at times a guy on a bike wearing a bicycle helmet, the companies sending their delivery teams out should also be held accountable for making sure the guys operate with safety gear that will actually protect them.

Besides all the driving complaints, which are valid, it is an eye opener to consider and keep in mind what these drivers have to go thru to get our warm food & goods on time to us. And we should also show gratefullness. I think loadshedding has affected many people's perception negatively of what others have to go thru to survive. Let us not misdirect our frustrations and anger.

There are no red tapes south Africans don't apply, they call you velaphi when you are a driver, I used to do deliveries(2020-2021) after Covid19 retrenchment also at the time I was finishing off my degree, and its easy to join for everyone they only need a learners/license ,ID copy and criminal check. And you make about R1.5k-R3k a week. Takealot is always looking for drivers.

What the government should do is make bike licenses free to South African citizens as part of a social development scheme. If the industry plans to grow that much, then our own South African people should be equipped with the resources to work. The foreigners came from so far to make a life, our own people should be ashamed of themselves, it's not difficult to ride a bike. Then our guys can drive instead of robbing innocent people.

These bikers are partners to the delivery companies and are self employed. The riders are flexible to work whenever they feel like working and this business requires a lot self discipline. You can't go and get a fake sick note because no work no pay.

The government can maybe give them bikes on loan and they repay monthly. The mentality of expecting free stuff should stop, nobody is owed a free bike just because they are South Africans. These refugees came with little to nothing and somehow managed to either rent bikes or get them on loan. Those robbing people on the street, smoking hard stuff and taking drugs are doing it by choice, not because of lack of resources.

I started renting out bikes in 2018 and quickly learned not to trust or rent to SA people. At the time they undermined the pay compared to Uber even friends and family thought I was mental. And worst part of all they had excuses when they have to pay the weekly rent which started at R1200 and has now dropped to R650 a week due to supply of bikes. For foreign guys I would announce at 8am I hv a bike to rent 1pm 10 guys be chasing me for the bike by next week mon/ tues I have my pay. The industry shot off during covid my best driver operating in Bram even bought a car, SA guys hv also started joining. I hv since parked my bike due to theft nd bad drivers.
