Think he could be a good pickup for the Sharks with the PEN’s pick at 11-15 assuming we have it

Wouldn’t be the worst thing since we really don’t have anyone on the blue line… however definitely hope 1st overall works out, and then we can still grab someone like Yakemchuk too

He'll be a top 4 D if you give this guy enough time to develop his game in the AHL with a good coach.
@antoninop.1411
@antoninop.1411 2 ай бұрын
I actually think you were a little too generous on his skating. He doesn't look like he can get back at the W level, and unless he really improves markedly, he's going to be a nonfactor on the backcheck at the nhl level after playing up in the o-zone which he likes to do. He looks incredible in the offensive zone, almost like a first line forward the way he can navigate through traffic and has the vision to dish the puck to the right guy, but if I'm drafting a D in the top 15 in today's nhl, he better skate better than he is and already be well above average in transition, at least if you're taking him as an offensive defenseman that high. If he can't do either of those things in his draft year as an offensive d, it's a bit of tall ask to expect him to develop them as the competition gets tougher. And he does look like he makes a lot poor decisions on d. I watched a lot of Brent Burns, and this guy reminds me somewhat of him, but Burns was better in transition and actually could stand guys up at the blue line even when he was younger. Burns also had the recovery speed to somewhat make up for his gaffes and a longer reach with a great stick. But he just would frustrate you to no end in the defensive zone with his decision making a lot of times. Carter's going to be drafted high because he's big and he's a right shot d, but for an offensive defenseman without a good transition game in the W, I'm passing on him for one of the better forwards that may be around in the top 15. If the Pens end up with pick 11 and Zeev Buium is on the board, SJ better take him. Buium just looks like he has an elite mind that's a great fit for D. He's got enough of the cerebral mindset you need at the higher levels as a d to pace his team's play, having the poise and presence of mind to slow the game down when it needs to be and picking up when necessary. He may not be the biggest, but he's 6' and should fill out enough in today's pickup hockey nhl. I just don't think he makes it down the board that far.

That is very possible. It's a tendency to be a little on the generous side with skating. But I don't think it's that bad. As the game goes on, his skating kinda break down and slows down but that seems more like a fitness thing. I'm not saying he's a great skater but I think he will settle somewhere around NHL average. He's the definition of high risk high reward. He showed flashes of brilliance in pretty much every sphere of the game. The only question is if he can get close to that level consistently. But if I have to choose one between him and Buium today, I probably bet on Buium. There's a chance Yakemchuk end up the best but Buium is rock solid and has been very good for years. The track record is also outstanding.

Curious to know how you would compare him & Levshunov. Who would you take over the other, and why
@bluechipprospect
@bluechipprospect Ай бұрын
I'd take Levshunov before Yakemchuk. They both bring a lot of offense but in a different way. I'd say that levshunov's way of shorter touches and less flash is more likely to translate even though I think Yakemchuk has the higher offensive ceiling. Levshunov is also stronger defensively. While he does play an aggressive offensive style which takes him out sometimes, I think he did a pretty good job at defending at the NCAA level. Played better than I anticipated that's for sure. They're both big and physical defensemen but right now at least, Levshunov is much stronger on the puck and in puck battles. Just closer to the finished product physically. He's also a stronger skater. So in the end, I think Yakemchuk has the higher offensive ceiling but his game might frustrate you along the way. But Levshunov has the #1 defenseman ceiling that contributes both sides of the ice with a higher chance of reaching that ceiling than Yakemchuk.

So I just watched your mock draft (en Français) where you had my Sens taking Yak at 7. I really like him. I just don’t know if you take him at 7. I really feel like Ottawa needs to take best player available, with SOME thought for positional lead. It’s no secret the Sens would want a RD. I just don’t know how much you need to reach for one. We have had no first round pick the last couple years. Our last top ten pick (10th overall in 2021) was completely wasted on reaching for a guy that could have been had way later. And if he wasn’t available later, then you just don’t take him. I’m talking about Tyler Boucher. This is Ottawa’s first chance to get a good prospect since the 2020 draft. I’d be much more comfortable drafting someone with a more certain level of promise. I’d rather draft a for sure third line winger than a defenceman who might or might not become an effective middle pairing D man. My issue with Yakemchuk is that so many people seem to question his skating. In my opinion, big bodied D men NEED to have good skating, otherwise they just end up being bottom pairing goons. And if Yak’s offence DOESNT translate to the NHL level, then that is all he will be. A bottom pairing or even 7th D, that is only good at chasing hits and constantly pulling himself out of position. So he’s probably better for a team with a deeper prospect pool to take a gamble on. I’d prefer Parekh as a RD, if he’d be available, as his skating and skills make him a mini Karlsson. And he’s got a much higher floor than Yakemchuk. If Parekh isn’t available, I’d much rather go for a forward like Eiserman, Iginla, or Helenius. Or even guys like Brandsegg-Nygård or Sennecke. Then of course there’s the option of taking LD in Silayev or Buium. Either way you slice it, there’s gonna be LOTS of good guys available at 7. Sorry I wrote a book. And I didn’t proofread it. So sorry if there’s mistake. Also; I’ve seen a FEW people picking Yakemchuk for Ottawa. So what the hell do I know!. 😱 lol
@bluechipprospect
@bluechipprospect 20 күн бұрын
You’re right that there’s a certain risk with Yakemchuk. The skating is only ok imo even though some thinks it’s more than good enough. I think he’s agile enough to escape forechecking pressure, he’s decently good at mitigating chances when defending the rush not over committing one side or another. My issue with his skating is the overall speed. He he can explode out of a shaky shaky to create separation and start the breakout but often forward can catch up because he doesn’t gain enough speed. I’m not sure if it’s really an issue at the NHl level since he can use his vision, his crazy hands and deception to open passing lanes to break the puck out instead. I would bet on Yakemchuk finding success at the NHl level but he does rely on having the puck on his stick a lot to create offense compared to a guy like Parekh who just jump into the right space at the right time to make a perfect play every time. Like you said, there will be tons of options for Ottawa so you will most likely get out of the draft with a significant piece for the future of the team.

As a Devils fan I feel like the only way he's gonna translate at the NHL level is to be a defensive defenseman like Braden Schneider. He feels like one of those guys who is gonna have to change his game to adapt to the NHL level.

I really like Brerkley Catton, but how does he compare with Nick Suzuki at his draft year?
@bluechipprospect
@bluechipprospect 2 ай бұрын
Skill level is close but Catton is a significantly better skater. On the other hand, Suzuki is playing at 200 pounds which Catton most likely never will and works really well through contact which Catton can't at 163 lbs

If no first line forward is available to montreal they need to pick the best dman. They have a better chance of trading that dman for a top forward than drafting one at that point

Yakemchuk appears to be a better version of Logan Mailloux, both having similar playing traits !!!
@bluechipprospect
@bluechipprospect 2 ай бұрын
There is definitely some similarities. It's hard to say who's the better one because at the same age, Mailloux had 4 OHL games under his belt, Yakemchuk has 189 games ...Mailloux had a lot of catching up to do. But Yakemchuk's hands are a game breaking ability so just like you, I would bet on Yakemchuk

Biggest boom/bust in this draft. If he makes several leaps in his skating, he can be exceptional. If he can't he's probably not in the NHL at all
@bluechipprospect
@bluechipprospect Ай бұрын
I agree that there's a significant difference between his floor and his ceiling but I believe his floor is an NHL player nonetheless. I think that when you have that kind of skill and physical advantage, you'll make it in some capacity. I think of Bouchard who was a worst skater and worst defender at the same age. Still not a great skater and still defends like an overcooked noodle but has crazy offensive output.

To put it in perspective Sid Crosby a great player as everyone knows was a high PLUS in his junior years.He joined a bad Pitts team and was called upon to lead them as a young rookie and he did that with 102 pts and only a minus 1 again on a terrible team.Your not born with a mindset and skill set you have to work at it and learn and this happens BEFORE your drafted they don't wait until they are 21-25 before learning the game and how to think they already GET IT. The separation of all smart IQ players is of course their shot or speed/quickness/agility but they all share the same high IQ.OTHER low end players do NOT get it and instead are just the bearer's of excuses like age.

Very different type of player. If a team needs offense from the back end, they're not going to draft Elick to do that work, the guy is almost scared of the puck 😆 but he does other things really well sometimes.

If you consider the packages compared to other players you're likely right. But considering how high the attributes that Yakimchuk has are usually valued at the draft table it's going to be more of a 12-20 range.

It looks to me like he has the same problem anotehr over rated player has "Slafkovsky" he is a puck watcher and doesn't read the ice w/o the puck.That is why he doesn't force plays because he is too late to pickup the play and why he struggles under pressure because he hasn't looked ahead for an out pass or a quick give n go .I would not pick this player in the first round and imo the ONLY reason he is getting notice is his size. So if your not smart enough you need to be either quick or fast and he is neither.I would consider him maybe late second round even still he will never be a good top 4 D man more like a 5 or 6 but still a risk factor because he would then be surrounded by other lower end players meaning a weak line defensively. What really baffles me is when people rate players and why managers tell us WHY they picked a player all we hear afterwards are the same excuse >>he is still young.That kind of excuse tells me managers are picking players on a GUESS and not on their current skillset just HOPING with a few years under their belt they will all of a sudden learn how to play hockey ..lmao TOO LATE you should be drafting a smart intelligent player that already knows how to play hockey.

What in the ever-loving F are you talking about? If your assessment of Slafkovsky turns out the same for Yakemchuck, surely, Yakemchuck will become a star. Slafkovsky has well above average IQ. and vision. All that he needed was to adjust to the NHL rink and pace. Which he did, thus exploding to a ppg pace the back half of the season, mostly playing at 19 years old. There are so many disastrous takes on YT and X, and yours is near the top.
