LOL this is the cleanest studio I've ever seen! My old studio looked the the aftermath of a medieval battle between books and coffee mugs! Great video!

Very interesting! Studio looks cozy. Nice, big windows for a tone of natural light and view. Surprise cameo by Tiffany from Comicpop with Brian K Vaughan. They're another comic book channel that I like. Keep up the great work Jim.

Picked up my books from this past week and on my way out my eyes skimmed their sale rack, and couldn’t help but spot a copy of the big bad X-Men Grand Design volume one. Not that I could miss a book that towers above the competition, in more ways than one I might add. Had to liberate it from the discount shelf where it definitely doesn’t belong! Also $20 is a steal for that Street Angel paperback! Nice!

Loved this, Thanks Jim Rugg, You said something around minutes 44:00 about the state of comics and where the industry is headed. It triggered a random thought. Do you remember back in the 90s, they had that comic book bible? That be cool if y'all reviewed that. I know y'all did that Chick Tracks a while back. I know there's a slew of religious inspired comics, even propaganda pieces, even military psy ops brochures both for the troops and the enemy. It be interesting to see how comics are used, outside of markets and more as persuasion devices or even as education devices. Thanks guys, always good.

I use a spreadsheet instead of index cards. Spreadsheet cells are flexible like cards because you have a grid, and you can throw any amount into a cell. Harder to take out of the house, though. Another planning tool I've started using is Venn diagrams: it's a way to filter down brainstorms and keep the collection of ideas I'm thinking about tight and coherent. I just sketch a bunch of those out on note paper in different arrangements, look for overlapping patterns, then remove the ones that aren't getting a lot of overlap. Then brainstorm again from that in a new iteration, until I have enough ideas for a story to pop out.

I have a bunch of artist books and that Kurtzman one is a favorite! It's so good. Great art reproductions and insights. We've shown some of it in past episodes. I love the reproductions of his roughs and page layouts. Good book for sure!

Next time we're in the same room together, Jim, let's talk about the parallels you make between comics and territorial wrestling - I've been thinking a lot about the similarities that the comics industry/hustle shares with the system of stand-up comedy.

Orbital Comics have 10% friendlier staff than Gosh Comics, and also have 50p bins for old junky comics. I only say this as I've heard Gosh mentioned several times on this channel, and they're always pretty snotty in there. Maybe it's because they still have a porno store opposite and are trying to be more 'Modern Soho' than 'Classic Soho' :)

I will definitely grab the book. But I am interested in your writing process. At these stage your cards are not representing pages, right? Few cards can end up on one page?

They don't rep pages. They are more like moments or scenes. Not too detailed. So yes, a few cards can equal a page. Have you ever seen any of Alan Moore's scripts? Sometimes he'll spend a page on one panel because he's explaining a lot to his collaborators. These cards can be like that. It's working out ideas so there isn't a strict formula. Plus, once I have the story mapped out in these cards, then I'll break the story into pages. And not all of the cards will make the cut. Also, a card might be several pages. If I have an idea for a scene, I might only need a couple words to describe that scene, but the scene could be complex and lengthy once it becomes panels.

I have Street Angel ordered from Discount Comic Book Service, but I have fourth week shipping so they already sent my monthly order and now I have to wait until next month to read it. I tried to Google Johan Peterson and can't find anything, so I assume I am spelling it wrong. Anyone know the correct spelling or have a link?

It sounds as if you start drawing before you have a script; is that right?

No. I might start sketching. But I'll have a working script. Right now, I've got a few pages that I could start drawing. I need to work out a bit more of the overall story before I feel confident beginning. I tend to work in drafts. And once I have the structure in place, I can start drawing without having a completely polished script. Things change in the drawing process, so I want a structurally sound working draft. That's what I'm doing right now.

@@CartoonistKayfabe There are subtleties I tend to wonder about, like something specific in dialog may affect facial expression, and the amount of text will change panel composition. I didn't consider the possibility of a visual draft, but of course that's what thumbnails are. Fascinating layers of discipline in comics. I'd like to see more of the process, maybe after it's complete.
