Or does this chess meme have another origin? :D In any case, GM Svidler's commentary is truly a *treasure* to be cherished and preserved, and an incredible gift to fans of the game all over the world. We get a rare glimpse inside a super-GM's mind, and see how a player at the top of the world approaches our beloved game. And he's so articulate and easy to follow - I have no doubt he instantly sees far more lines than he could verbally explain in a reasonable time, but he can distill them down and present the crucial ideas in a way even us mere mortals can follow. Truly a joy to listen to. Words can't thank him enough, but... *Thank you, Peter!*

Great commentary, Peter. I had to pause and come back to it several times due to other interruptions, but I see why you took the time. It certainly was the match of the tournament. And you gave it the commentary of the tournament.

Time to bring in smart clocks that display the move number which this game makes obvious is vital in no increment time scrambles. Both Magnus and now Wes have been embarrassed by clock issues and this latest clock fiasco robbed us all of a wonderful five player tiebreaker. Nevertheless congrats Fabi.

You know, another thing I've noticed is that Mr. Svidler really knows how to incorporate computer analysis and evaluations in his commentary. No other commentator I've seen on KZfaq does it as well. Kasparov used to talk about combining GM and computer talent to play chess; here Mr. Svidler combines the two in the most harmonious way to provide human commentary.

I really appreciate Svidlers remarks when the machine says something is good and he says he would have never seen that, or that a human would never go for that.

What do you think of fixing the classic time control, so it is the same at all tournaments? In Norway Chess alone, there are now two famous games with dramatic ends because of the (unnecessarily) weird time control. I think tournament organizers are just trying to be fancy, tbh. The game quality should not vary too much from giving or taking 10 minutes here or there. And the game Magnus lost on time is the perfect example for ridiculous time controls getting to players.

Seriously, Imagine if every football or other sport that you watch having slightly different rules each game. Some level of standardization on time mechanics would be good for the game

Surely it would be easy to program the clocks to automatically add the time after they're hit 40 times? Or are there situations where they can be hit more than once per move?

My big question is why So took 40. Rxh3+ in the first place if he didn't see that he needed to play 41.Rd2? He was giving up a whole rook, after all. Doesn't this rook sacrifice only make sense if you calculate the next several moves to a perpetual? The two moves need to be considered together, right? In other words, why, when he played Rxh3, why did he think that Rd3 was going to work? What was the perpetual that So thought would follow from playing Rd3?

Don't the clocks have a move counter? So you can just press the + (at my clock at least) and get the move number displayed. Also, can't he just get up and ask the arbiter about the move count? It frankly seems ridiculous that players blitz out moves to make sure they make the time control.

Fantastic game, very interesting for spectators. But flawed, as Peter says. But still Fabi deserves credit for at least being enterprising, although his provocation of Wesley could easily have backfired. Still it was smart to "go for broke" and try to win outright, because the alternative of a draw and engaging Magnus in a tie-break was not a strategy that had a high chance of success.

Looks like Wesley missed some chances for the advantage in this game, not that the line was obvious or overwhelming. What I wonder more than anything is why Magnus opted for such a seemingly unambitious approach in the crucial final round against MVL!

Wesley did obviously miss his chances. Fabi got lucky in a sense, or got away with one.
