I got a piece of apple wood from my cousin and decided to make a fruit bowl out of it. I used MANPA angle grinder attachment which was given to me by the online store TOBI.SI. This tool is ideal for anyone who likes carving with power tools. I tried to carve only by hand, but I realize that this is not my thing.
The easiest way to describe the tool is as a manual CNC machine. It is extremely manageable and precise. The blades are replaceable and adjustable, so they cut like butter. The toothed belt prevents kickbacks. When the blade jams, the belt simply spins to idle and nothing happens. I have been using the tool for several years and the belt has not yet broken. If this happens, it can be replaced. The tool is made of quality materials. Blades can be of different sizes and shapes. Extendable arm can be extended.
I use foam sanding attachments to sand the internal curves. Manual sanding of internal curves can be very tiring and time-consuming.
I use 80 and 240 grit sandpaper for manual sanding.
I protect the wood with IKEA mineral oil and then seal the pores with beeswax.
The technique of making wooden dishes that I present in the video can be an alternative for all of us who do not use or do not have a lathe.
The good side of using power tools is the possibility of making larger bowls (which are too big for the lathe) and the possibility of making irregular, asymmetrical shapes.
I am happy with the finished product. I like the modern oval shape of the bowl and the bark gives a rustic touch. The wood was not of the best quality, it had far too much sapwood and not enough heartwood. Therefore, unwanted cracks were formed. A woodworm was also at home under the bark ;)

I've made a lot of bowls with an angle grinder and seen them made on KZfaq but that's the first live edge bowl I've seen made with grinder awesome

That was fantastic, just what I was seeking. We had to have our beloved neighborhood landmark 30+ feet circumference willow tree felled recently and I kept several burls (including some well over 100 pounds). I'm going to make some bowls out of them. This video gave me lots of information on techniques and equipment. THANK YOU!

Thanks for your comment! It's a really good feeling if I can inspire someone to make their own bowl and get some useful information at the same time. When such a big tree falls, I think it's a good opportunity to make a beautiful product out of this wood in memory of the mighty tree. When the bowl is made, I will be happy if you send me a photo to see the result ;)

I’m carving split rail cedar boards smooth (I don’t mind tool marks). Would you suggest the Manpa 3” or 4” carving blade? Love your work!

It is important to know that MANPA blades are primarily intended for carving curves and not flat surfaces. If you need a tool to make a straight and smooth cut, then this is not the tool for you. However, there is no better tool on the market for carving curves efficiently and easily. My primary blade is the 3" Circular Cutter 12mm. I use the 4" cutters when I carve larger diameter curves and want to make deep cuts. 12mm cutters are thicker and enable faster material removal. I use 8mm cutters in the later stages of carving for a finer finish. I wish you a nice day and a lot of fun in carving ;)

Beautiful space and bowl. How do you keep the bark from eventually falling off?
@MyHappyPlaceSlovenia
@MyHappyPlaceSlovenia Жыл бұрын
If the wood is dried properly, the bark usually does not fall off. It also depends on the type of wood. I know that the bark remains on oak, walnut and some fruit varieties of wood. Of course, it should only be used indoors and in dry areas. Outside, the bark will fall off sooner or later due to high humidity. The woodworm also likes to hide in the bark. That's why a product with preserved bark is even more special ;)

What kind of oil are you using on the wood?
@MyHappyPlaceSlovenia
@MyHappyPlaceSlovenia 9 ай бұрын
In this video, I protected the bowl with SKYDD mineral oil bought at the IKEA store: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/bdmUqqyQrsyZf2g.html Mineral oil is suitable for protecting wooden products made of solid wood in interior spaces. Because it is liquid, it penetrates deep into the wood and gives the wood a distinctly 'wet' look. I additionally protect the bowls with beeswax, which closes the pores of the wood, makes the wood even smoother to the touch and gives it a silky shine.
