I started carving stone and had a blast. So I created a beginners video to help you get started. As you will see, I started with a very basic toolset and jumped in.

I am a beginner with NZ Oamaru stone which is very soft so easy to carve but also very fragile. I think it’s much softer than the limestone but it is great fun to work with.

you mentioned wax. does that get absorbed into the stone? i wish i could see what that looks like.

You might find this interesting but this is how the Mayans built the pyramids. By carving limestone. Then they added hieroglyphics along its exterior.

Looks like a lot of fun! Is there a reason you have your work on a spongy surface? it seems to me like you are wasting a lot of energy being absorbed by the cushion!
